we should crank it up again
3/23/2020 5:43:07 PM
downloaded but it's idle. says there are no work units available for my config
3/26/2020 2:51:09 PM
strange it wouldnt even try the cpu. usually its the gpu where it cant find compatible jobs.

Amazingly I still remembered my email address and password from 17 years ago to update our team information. I finally removed the ncsufolding.com link. I think I lost our logo though. It's probably on a zip drive somewhere.
3/30/2020 1:49:34 PM
^Awesome. Team #59
4/2/2020 12:16:00 PM
I thought I fixed the ncsufolding.com link on Stanford's page, but it has not updated so who knows. Is there a facebook group for our team? The link in the first post is dead.I started up three machines again to contribute to the Covid 19 effort. They have so many more active CPUs running this, that they don't have enough WUs to send out, so sometimes the machines remain idle.
4/3/2020 9:08:17 AM
I've got my RTX 2070 Super and my GTX970 running F@H right now. Not getting a lot of WUs until overnight though for the most part.

^I'm assuming you are NCSUDave? You are crushing it now. https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=61299

Yep. Finished a new PC in January, and then all this happened and I've been busier than ever, so might as well let that computer and my HTPC do some folding. Just running GPU process is going really well.
4/8/2020 9:31:06 AM
That GPU is crazy efficient. Make sure your have your passkey setup if you want to earn bonus points. I'm not sure how much it is, but I did it anyway.
4/8/2020 3:32:24 PM
I can add in a Linux server I have (8086K CPU) although I don't have a GPU in it ... because it's a Linux server.
4/8/2020 9:42:23 PM
^^Yea, both the 2070 and 970 are doing great. I'm not sure of the passkey points either, but things seem to be doing well.
4/9/2020 8:51:25 AM
^^I just checked and they do have a Linux client. I have noticed on my Win10 machine that I use daily it does get a bit sluggish at full speed. I throttle it back now and then.

Clearly GPUs are the way to go. I have an old laptop and an Optiplex 755 that crank out about 7-9k PPD each. The Optiplex 755 is sff, so I can only use low profile cards (single slot). I bought a GT 1030 to see if I can get it to 50K PPD and turn off my old laptop. Unfortunately the GT 1030 has not gone down in price since release at ~$80. If you want estimates on PPD for GPUs, here are a few links:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v5gXral3BcFOoXs5n1M6l_Uo3pZpQYogn6gVlxRPnz0/edit#gid=0https://www.overclock.net/forum/55-overclock-net-folding-home-team/475163-gpu-projects-ppd-database.html

the linux client sux btw... if anyone needs help setting it up just send me a message.

I used to use a bootable image for this. It was all set up on a flash drive with user ID and team ID preprogrammed. You would just boot the machine from the flash drive and that was that. I took over a whole computer lab over spring break once doing that.Anyone know if something like that is still around?
5/6/2020 11:06:24 AM
every major linux distro has a bootable image option[Edited on May 6, 2020 at 4:25 PM. Reason : cant spell]
5/6/2020 4:24:42 PM
I'm talking a turn-key image. Once that boots and jumps right into folding. There was a website were you gave it you user name team names and it would craft the image for you.I know that site isn't working anymore.

5/8/2020 7:48:11 AM
I'm not sure if some members have been upgrading or it's just some more efficient WUs, but we've seen boost in production the last few days.
5/13/2020 8:44:03 AM
I've been consistently getting GPU WOs since this past weekend, which has helped quite a bit.
5/13/2020 2:51:04 PM
For those that are GPU folding, does it max out one of your CPU cores? I put in the GT 1030 low profile card last night and noticed 1 of my 4 cores is maxed out. If they don't usually max out, then I wonder if my CPU is a bottleneck or if I can run more than 1 core/GPU?[Edited on May 14, 2020 at 9:24 AM. Reason : .]
5/14/2020 9:23:33 AM
Yep, I'm guessing it still needs some CPU cycles even when you've set the client to only fold using the GPU.
5/14/2020 9:28:37 AM
New version is out https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/?fbclid=IwAR06TYD7GtthdV86uRoaE39mr-6MgPhoQJ7I_wq3J9aZr5WKTSigyHAE2Do7.6.13Keep an eye on any issues. I have not updated yet. Now that I have been folding for a few days with a GPU, I can see there is a wide variety of PPD WUs. For my GT 1030 the best PPD was 55k while the worst was 22K.[Edited on May 20, 2020 at 9:13 AM. Reason : .]
5/20/2020 9:12:55 AM
i kinda want to get back into it[Edited on May 20, 2020 at 12:35 PM. Reason : 29th place sucks]
5/20/2020 12:34:04 PM
^I'm at 36 with a slow climb over some of the old inactive users. What we really need are some PC gamers. GPUs are the way to go for sure.
5/21/2020 9:03:30 AM
Yeah I'm thinking about buying a GPU because what the hell else do I have to do these days??[Edited on May 21, 2020 at 10:50 AM. Reason : Cool just noticed you can prioritize COVID projects ]
5/21/2020 10:49:22 AM
^There is a GPU whitelist somewhere that states which ones are supported. I could not find it, but you might want to check before buying.
5/21/2020 5:34:38 PM
I can only run GPU because CPU folding trips my APC
5/22/2020 11:11:34 AM
^Haha nice. My GPU has a crunchy WU that will take 1.8 days and worth 83K. That's the largest I think I've had yet.
5/25/2020 8:04:16 AM
Are you guys all set to "Any Disease"?[Edited on May 27, 2020 at 2:26 PM. Reason : Also, every time my GPU tries to start a WU, i get an error about OpenCL.dll missing]
5/27/2020 2:17:43 PM
whoops, just needed driver update. folding so good now
5/27/2020 2:48:19 PM
Glad you got it figured out. I have mine set to any IIRC. There have been a lack of WUs for GPUs the last day or so.
5/27/2020 3:07:02 PM
There was a client update a few weeks back. I just upgraded to 7.6.13. No issues so far.https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/[Edited on June 13, 2020 at 6:54 AM. Reason : ]

It's getting tough to crack the top 30 for me. It going to take about 3 weeks to get from 31 to 30.
7/3/2020 10:59:19 AM
If you are running Nvidia GPUs, you might have noticed a nice PPD boost back in September. I certainly did. Unfortunately I just found my machine waiting for me to acknowledge some Windows Update, so it was down for about 4 days.https://foldingathome.org/2020/09/28/foldingathome-gets-cuda-support/
