^^ It's not the cost of the PSU, it's the cost of the power bill. Running your psu outside 60-80% utilization drops your efficiency, which adds up to a lot more than $20, even over a year 6/2/2016 5:56:43 PM |

I am in the market for a new video card. Below is the PC it's going in, and as you can tell, this is by no means a cutting edge machine. I mostly play Blizzard games (minus Overwatch), and would like for WoW to look great (wouldn't we all...). I have not built a PC in a few years, so I am no longer up to date on what is the best performance/value. I would like to roll with Nvidea since my last AMD/ATI experience was not stellar (unless something profound has made them worth it). Thanks!

Got my case and PS at least this weekend. I figure what's gonna happen is I will have everything else and then trying to find someone who has one of the new 1080 or 1070 nvidia cards in stock for the actual retail price may hold me up for a while haha

That is the mobo and processor I have been leaning towards. Pretty set on the processor nothing but great reviews but the mobo I am willing to look at other suggestions of comparable ones if anyone has any suggestions. I have never had any issues with ASUS been using their motherboards for a long time but reviews on all MB's it seems have been pretty mixed so this one ended up having the most features I was looking for and not overly expensive. Thoughts? 6/13/2016 9:13:52 AM |

^^ unless wow has gotten an amazing new engine recently, you probably won't see a huge difference on anything newer than a GTX670 or a radeon 6970. I'd probably get a 4gb 960 and call it a day 6/13/2016 12:16:37 PM |

Looked at my system last night realized I am still using a GTX460. It was a good card at the time but I cant imagine compared to even the 960 or 980 now haha. If I get a 1070 or 1080 I should be good for several years I would imagine. 6/13/2016 2:25:18 PM |

Doss, That processor is awesome. The mobo is a little overkill but hey, its only money right? I just bought the same processor but with the ASUS Z170 pro gamer... Also DDR4 3200 ram. Now if only a damn AIB 1080 would become available, JEEZ! 6/14/2016 8:30:33 AM |

Yeah I have spent more time going over MB's than anything else. I have always used ASUS boards without issue but seems like every board has very mixed reviews. I dont know how much of that is just people not knowing how to setup things or if there are a ton of issues these days.
Again this is the one I have been leaning towards http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813132565
I feel like I still need to do a lot more research though to make sure I get the one with all the features I want but dont go complete overkill. Clearly there are better boards out there but that one seems pretty good for the price point. 6/15/2016 11:02:44 AM |

Man trying to decide on how i want to proceed with a video card is frustrating. My current system has a gtx460 so Im debating buying a 960-980 and waiting on prices to come down on the 1080 but who knows how long that will be. I can spend like 700 bucks now (once I can find one) or spend like 200 on a 960 or 275 on a 970 and wait on prices to drop under 400 or 500 and have a better card to stick in my old system. Not sure that will happen for a long time though. 6/15/2016 3:57:34 PM |

You and me both. I sold my 690 a week ago thinking I could pick up a 1080. Now I sit here every day hoping my phone explodes with 1080s in stock. I'm hoping Friday some will appear. Go on http://www.nowinstock.net and have it alert you with texts and emails of when it will be available. A couple of days ago the MSI was in stock and was gone within a minute. I guess you just have to be quick. 6/16/2016 6:39:01 AM |

Yeah I have some time luckily as I still havent purchased or received all the pieces yet. Hoping by the time I have everything else I will be able to make a decision. Will probably order a MB and the RAM by end of this week if not today want to get that all in so I can measure how much room I have for the CPU cooler. I have a full tower case so I dont imagine I should have much issue but any suggestions? I have heard good things about Noctua although I am not sure I really like the way they look. 6/16/2016 8:17:51 AM |

Yep I just read that as well. I am debating just getting like a gtx 960 and sitting on that until supply improves and people have had time to review all the partner edition cards. Just need to make sure my older setup can accept whatever I get so that it doesnt feel like a total waste and I can upgrade that from a GTX 460 since my wife will be using that system. 6/16/2016 11:51:43 AM |

EVGA 700 B1 80+ Bronze 700W Power Supply
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler
all in a Fractal Design Define S windowless case
I'm pretty pleased with it so far

I decided I couldnt wait and wasnt paying ridiculous prices or sitting around all night refreshing and just bought a gtx 960 for fairly cheap to tide me over until I can get a 1080. Will be able to wait on reviews now and make sure one particular brand isnt having major failure issues. Will just replace the gtx 460 in my old system with the 960 once I make the switch. 6/20/2016 8:37:45 AM |

Now for the next debate as to what to do for a monitor. I am thinking of making the jump to 1440p for sure but not sure on whether to go 60 Hz or some of the newer 144 Hz which adds a lot to the price tag. All the reviews havent been great with tons of backlight bleeding and such so it has me discouraged for the price of these things. I have a 27" Samsung 1080p I am using right now. 6/20/2016 12:20:32 PM |

Yeah no kidding thats the problem I have run into as well is the cost and seems like a lot of bad reviews for how expensive they all seem to be. Seems like that one if tweaked right looks fairly decent at least. I havent looked at the two different types side by side to really know the difference just from all the reading I have done the past few days.
Guess I cant complain too much this is the monitor I currently am using

Seems like that one actually has a lot of good reviews compared to the higher cost IPS ones that seem to be a lottery and people having to return multiple times to get a good one. Only issues that keep coming up are to make sure you disable the deep sleep mode immediately (easy enough) and not HDCP compliant through the display port so you cant use it for some things like Amazon HD or watching blurays from what I have read. Granted the majority of time I dont use my PC for either of those things but never like having limitations.
Found it for 479 on newegg think I will give it a try at that price.
So last thing I really need to complete the build is the GTX 1080 but I will have to wait a couple months on that probably hopefully going from a GTX 460 to a 960 and this new build will hold me over until then.

I reused a 5 year old H80 cooler with artic 5 thermal paste with my 6700k. It's overcloked to 4.5ghz at 1.300v. In prime95 I'm getting Temps up to 80 C. That's a little concerning to me. I know prime95 is one of the most stressful programs but I'm wondering if the cooler just isn't up to the task. What kind of Temps are you getting? Aida64 gets a lot lower Temps and Intel burn says it's stable but I don't know 6/21/2016 12:37:57 PM |

Havent tested mine other than putting the barebones together last night to get it up and make sure nothing failed. I was sitting at 32 Deg C at idle but that was just in the BIOS haha.
Will probably just end up buying windows 10 this evening and getting that installed then I can test things out a bit more. Still waiting on my GTX 960 to arrive so running off onboard video currently.

That's a sweet deal. $499 for a 27" 2560 by 1440 144hz monitor with Nvidia G Sync. Albeit TN but for gaming it's great. The equivalent Acer or Asus monitors are $700-800 and have shitty QC.
--BestBuy has it for $499 still...

Do you not have (or can get) a copy of Windows 7? You can still get a free upgrade to Windows 10 until end of July I think.

I can find OEM copies online still but seems like they are already starting to drop support on 7. I kinda wanted to get 7 and upgrade so I had 7 to fall back on if I didnt like 10 but the fact I cant even buy a license online from Microsoft shows how little they care about 7 now.
I have a copy of 7 but plan to keep it on my old system so was hoping I could just use that install disk and purchase a license key from microsoft they would email me but that doesnt appear to be an option.. which is stupid.

Not sure why anyone would want to stay on Windows 7...Windows 10 is so much better.
Also Windows 7 does not support DX12 so if you stay on it (at least for a gaming computer) you'll start to lose features as more games support it. 6/21/2016 2:46:20 PM |

Yep exactly so figured I may as well just say fuck it and buy a copy of 10 and start learning how to use it haha. 6/21/2016 2:48:00 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
I guess what I mean is if you have a copy of 7 floating around or can obtain one then just install that and upgrade to 10.
Also there's not really any "learning" to do. You can access all the same legacy menus as Windows 7. The UI is different and there's (per usual) some annoying things that are easy to turn off. For the most part though it's still just normal Windows with a lot of cool new features. 6/21/2016 2:50:02 PM |
Doss2k All American 18474 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah I have a copy of 7 but want to keep using that on my older system that I am giving to my wife. I could order a copy and upgrade but the cost doesn't seem to be that much different unless I buy from a shady place and who knows if the key will be good. Its like 95 bucks on Amazon for 7 and I think it was 120 for 10 at best buy. Sure I could save 20 bucks but at least I know I have a hard copy if I need a clean install not sure how it works if you upgrade and then need to do a clean install later with 7. 6/21/2016 2:53:26 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
I really don't see you needing to revert back to 7. I installed 10 on a couple VMs, my desktop, at least 5 laptops, and my HTPC/server and they all work great. With that being said if you're still concerned then yeah maybe get Windows 7 then upgrade to 10 so you still have the ability to revert back to 7. 6/21/2016 3:12:20 PM |
Doss2k All American 18474 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah but then I thought what happens when I revert back and they dont allow me to upgrade again and they drop support on 7 haha. Think Ill just get 10 and live with any problems it has till they patch em lol 6/21/2016 4:01:18 PM |
