https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2018/apr/27/north-and-south-korea-summit-leaders-prepare-for-historic-inter-korean-meeting-live

Quote :
"Kim Jong-un, dressed in his signature striped Mao-style jacket, shook Moon’s hand across the border line and the two men chatted briefly before stepping over the line and posing for photos. It is the first time a North Korean leader has set foot in the South since the end of the Korean War.

Kim then brought Moon over the border to the North sign for a few seconds and they held hands as the crossed back into the South."

This is nothing but good. I hope Tom Cotton and the GOP doesn’t try to undermine the president again, though.

Also, it’s interesting that the Democrats aren’t shitting all over this like the GOP did with Iran. That should make it a ton easier for Trump/Pompeo/Moon to make some real permanent headway if Un is serious about opening up NK.

Who’s shitting on this?

I haven’t seen anyone say it’s not a positive development

It really doesn’t look like the US was involved in this though, at least not like the Iran deal where we were leading the negotiations.

I don’t care who the most important players are tbh. If Trump wants to claim credit have at it. I care more about legitimate peace and better lives for the Korean people.

He still sucks and his policies hurt more Americans then they help.

Lol @ Trump4NobelPeacePrize

Wouldn't that chap some peoples' tails.

Seriously though, whether a direct correlation to his policies or not, would he be a serious contender? I mean Obama won it on the assumption he would do great things, so I don't see this as being that much different.

Come on TGL3...I know you're gonna reply. Tell me how my comment on Obama was so wrong. Based on what I've read, he was awarded the prize based on his promises to close Gitmo, end the Isreali-Palestinian conflict, and basically just willing to reach out to other countries. But still, it appeared to have been awarded based on promises, not deeds.

Obama didn't deserve it, and Trump definitely doesn't deserve it. That completely erases the work of peace activists in Korea, not to mention excusing his mass murder elsewhere in the world.

I don't care if he personally dismantles the border, he's still a fucking war criminal and it's insane for a leftist to suggest he deserves the peace prize.

How is Trump a war criminal?

Anyways, I agree with Tulsi and I detest Donald Trump and am absolutely convinced he is a treasonous mobster. But IF he does something positive he should get credit.

Hating every single thing and claiming he has done absolutely no good things is an indication that you are ignoring facts just as badly as people who blindly support him and see nothing negative.

But it's nothing new. Most (all?) recent US presidents are war criminals as well.

I always give him credit when it's due. The North Korea stuff is fantastic. But if anyone deserves the prize, it's the South Korean left. They've given years (or decades) of their life for this. Trump breaking ranks with past leadership to allow it is great, but it's about the least he could do.

Literally the only reason Trump is doing this is to get his name in the hat for a Nobel.

He'll waddle in with absurd benchmarks for N Korea to meet, which they won't, and this will all just be an over-hyped photo op.

Looks like the MAGAS and far left (Tracey/Greenwald/etc) are pretty happy. But honestly I’m not sure about what. I mean we are basically taking Trumps word that Kim will de-nuke which he obviously won’t. I’m not sure I see any tangible concessions by NK or really any changes at all.

Still, being further from nuclear war (which by the way Trump ratcheted up himself) is a good thing. I’d rather we don’t heap praise on the way he runs his country though.

Largely symbolic, though even the tenuous promise of denuclearization is a good thing. I think Trump maybe gave a bit more than he should have, since denuke-ing was the stated price for America to even come to the table, but good faith is good faith I suppose.

All-in-all I don't think Trump did too badly here.

Though the flip side is that he's set the bar so low at this point that we're almost forced to be impressed by this not being a complete shitshow. Give it a couple days and we'll be back to status-quo.

Because this is overwhelmingly what Koreans want.

"According to a recent poll, 88 percent of the South Korean public viewed the recent peace summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in as a success. In addition, 65 percent of South Koreans trust Kim Jong-un on his pledge to denuclearize, and Moon Jae-in’s approval ratings have shot up to 86 percent. Broadly speaking, recent developments between North and South Korea have been met with widespread optimism and praise from the South Korean public."

Trump heaping praise and saying the people love Kim and he loves them because of fervor they show is a pretty pathetic and useless thing to say given what we know.

The people of Korea want peace, of course. And I’m glad we are further away from a hot war then we were last year. South Koreans don’t want to live in threat of a madman using nukes and invading their country. North Koreans would rather not be systematically imprisoned and/or killed for any sign of dissent or disloyalty. Was there any talk of him releasing his political prisoners? I missed it if so.

Basically what happened here is Trump took us to the brink of a major calamity last year, backed off and then went over the top to reconcile. He basically lowered the bar to “no nuclear war.” A good lowering it only really ratcheted up by him in the first place.

[Edited on June 12, 2018 at 10:58 AM. Reason : First paragraph answers your last question. If Trump deserves praise he should get it.]

symbolic may be too generous a term, they have made that claim many times in the past

it's nothing new until actual real steps and milestones area created and there is no reason to believe that we are any closer to that happening. without receiving any concessions this was a propaganda win for KJU and nothing more.

My bar for Trump is “are we closer to a nuclear war now or when he took over.”

My answer is it appears we are back to where we were on Jan 20, 2017. KJU has a nuke program and we don’t want him to. The only difference is he has been given a platform to be seen as an equal on the world stage. That’s nit inherently bad or good but it’s the only change.

If Trump got actual concessions or worked with KJU on human rights or was able to get information on the depth of the NK nuclear program I’d give him credit for that. As it stands he created a shitstorm with his bellicose behavior last year and then decided he’d ratchet it down. He basically lowered the bar himself to the lowest possible place and then barely hopped over it.
