It isn't so much that the intelligentsia will be wiped out. Everyone would be damn near equally eradicated. The proportion of brainy to brainless wouldn't really change, as each individual's chances of survival have less to do with intellect and more to do with strength of will.

Once, I grinned a bear to death.

How's that for strength of will?

No, I'm pretty sure we're going to suffer a hit to the "smarter peoples of the earth" because in general, smart people live in population centers. The zombie invasion would happen so quick there that they would be harder hit, whereas those out in the sticks who are on average less intelligent than their city-dwelling bretheren would have at least three advantages:

1. They may be so far removed that the zombie invasion never reaches them
2. If it does reach them, they have time to prepare.
3. Many of them have weapons, and they know how to use them. This provides a signifigant advantage over poindexter who gets his brains eaten because he's caught off guard in the city while drinking a latte at a cafe.

^^There's no sense in even trying to be PC in this discussion...generalizations are necessary when talking about an event this large-scale.

Sorry, wolfpacker, I'm still not buying it, not least because there are plenty of educated people who live a ways away from population centers. Living away from cities and suburbs is "in" with a lot of the intelligentsia, and has been since Walden and before.

Having time to prepare only does country folks so much good, anyway. If this thread has demonstrated anything, it's that most people, regardless of where they live or how bright they are, have no idea how to prepare for a zombie attack. And weapons...don't even get me started. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: guns are not especially useful in a zombie scenario. Only the craziest of the crazy survivalists have enough firearms, ammunition, and knowledge to make them worthwhile. It is precisely because Bubba out in Bumfuck thinks that his shotgun will protect him that Bubba will be killed.

That said, I agree that a rural setting has many advantages -- it's just that those advantages are worthless unless you know how to take advantage of them.

Has anyone ever bought the zombie preparedness book? I've seen it around and it looks like it would be good for some laughs, if nothing else.

They can't swim but they don't need air so they can walk along the bottom of a body of water. See Land Of the Dead.

I want to register my belief that this thread is kept alive by zombies who sit at their keyboards and randomly type to keep this shit going.

That said, I enjoyed the Zombie Survival Guide, and I enjoy bashing people in the head, dead or no.

If the zombies are close enough for the shotgun to be effective, consider yourself eaten.

Regarding "zombies can't swim, but can walk in water"—just make sure you're in a body of water sufficiently deep that they can't just grab your boat. Besides, slack-bodied humans (aka zombies/dead people) float, so if they went into water IRL, they would just wind up drifting aimlessly on the surface of the water...

OK, on second thought, getting out into water might be a really bad idea, unless you have a boat with high sides.

Also, buckshot carries enough to puncture skulls out to like a hundred yards, so it'd still be great for firing into masses of zombies, like from the roof of the mall from Dawn.

Hey, anyone want to get together and watch the Dead movies sometime?

^^Because zombies are the single greatest threat to humanity in the history of the world

They make nuclear weapons look like a bad case of gas

^I'd be down, but I'd probably talk all the way through them.

while the shotgun is a very versatile home defense weapon and sure to be effective at close range against an oncoming ghoul there are a few disadvantages (ex. the ammo is relatively large)

I want a Ruger 10/22 carbine. The .22 round is powerful enough to penetrate the skull and destroy the brain. .22 rimfire is very small and easier to carry.

This weekend I shot my brother-in-law's .45 pistol. I decided that it would make an excellent sidearm should I be forced to use it. The magazines are easy to store and I'm about 75% accurate shooting 27 rounds in 15 seconds (9 bullets to a magazine) from 50 feet away into a milk jug (about the size of a human head). The exit holes from those bullets are huge...they would blow out brains with a quickness.

Don't have any projectile weapons. But I have sword, flail, a few daggers I could throw, and a few other close combat weapons with which I could destroy the head of a zombie. Living on the 2nd floor, I'd probably barricade the stairs outside as much as possible, and then just barricade the door. Its a thick door, and there are no windows accessible to anyone, so I'd be alright until I starved to death.

But if the zombies attack while I’m at work at the vet clinic, I’m screwed. It’s full of windows and doors. And there would definitely be some resident evil style zombie dogs roaming around.

I'd definitely want something ridiculously high capacity, but I think your best bet is one of those little semi-auto .22 rifles, if you have to be shooting for accuracy a lot. I've never shot any kind of pistol but revolvers, and I have to say I liked that whole single-action trick.

the Ruger 10/22 is a .22 rimfire semi-auto rifle that is highly customizable.

Well exactly how damaged does a zombie's brain have to be in order to render it fully dead? I don't think a .22 rifle has enough energy to fully destory a zombie brain. It would likely just create a hole and lodge in the brain. Would that be enough?

They flatten out and break up when they hit, so they get bigger, plus the amount of energy the impart causes all the soft shit to scramble itself. Hollow ones will do even more.
