My parents are going to divorce and my mom wants me to hire a private investigator to gather evidence against my dads infidelity. Anybody have any experience with this?

She is right...

sounds like a horrible thing for a parent to ask a child to do. I think I would have reacted poorly towards either of my parents had they asked me to do the same during their divorce.

yep. she shouldn't have even told you she was doing it, much less asked you to do it. they shouldn't drag you into the middle like that.

Tell your 'rents to piss off when it comes to this kind of shit involving you. That's a shitty thing to ask your child to do. They're adults, let them sort out their problems on their own.

I feel for though. Doesn't sound like a fun place to be right now.

I'd ask to sit down with both of them (together, if that's possible) and explain to both of them that you do not want to be forced to take sides and that if they put you in that situation, that you will choose neither side. You may want to have a counselor present or someone who could mediate if it's a bitter divorce.

did anybody bother the ask Genki if he already had a side?
or what he felt about it to begin with?
Maybe he wants to help his mom?
Obviously I don't know anything... but it's just a thought

No good can come of taking sides in a divorce.

Even if Genki's dad is 80% at fault, he's still Genki's dad. Whether it's family or friends, don't get dragged into their marital problems. You can be supportive without trashing the other spouse.

Let's rephrase the question: Does anybody know a good private investigator for divorce cases?

(I'll leave my personal opinion out of this one ... ick!)

OK well heres the problem. First of all my mom barely speaks any english. And second, she feels screwed over because my dads been handling all the finances for as long as I can remember and nothing really is in her name (bank accounts, auto, possibly no credit) except 1 out of the 2 stores they own. And she stuck by his side forever just when things were getting better financially, he pulls this shit. Well I didn't want to pick sides but my moms basically helpless and my dads a prick anyways. But back to the main topic. Would hiring a pi and gathering evidence prove beneficial in a divorce?

"Warn your dad"
FUCK THAT SHIT...

If he's a cheater he deserves whatever he has coming to him.

But everyone here is right...let her fight it out with him

Exact same thing happened with my parents, my mom proved it and won---but never put me in the middle

^^definitely---she needs to hire a LAWYER first, then a PI

Hire a lawyer, who will probably tell her to hire a private investigator. Private investigators are pretty common now in divorces...it's fuckin sad, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

And if your dad's a prick, then he deserves what's comin.

So in hiring a pi, would my mom be entitled to more of my parents assets?

Recommend any divorce lawyers?

If they are in NC she will get half of everything anyway. The only point of hiring a PI would be to try and arrange to get alimony or something.

I can understand the kid wanting his mom to have a roof over her head. If he is getting in the middle of who gets the most shit then thats not really his place though.

Bad situation any way he turns. Still weak of his mom to ask him to do that.

So she would be entitled to half of everything even though her name isn't specifically attached to some of the assets?

I'm no expert, but yeah I think she gets half no matter whose name is on it. Talk to a lawyer though.

Here are a few good sites about divorce law in North Carolina:

http://www.divorcelawinfo.com/states/nc/northcarolina.htm

http://www.rosen.com/

From the first link I found this:

Quote :
"State law now declares that all property--including real estate and some pensions--accumulated during the marriage by the parties' efforts (exclusive of gifts and inheritances) shall be divded equitably between the parties, regardless of which party holds title or wonership to that property. The division of property will be equitable, which is not necessarily equal"

NC is a common propterty state, if the PI proves she was being cheated on though she can collect alimony until she remarries.
