I think quite a few people in here have read it. My wife and I read it last year. We both really liked it. When it first started (maybe first 1/4) I was kinda "meh, he is a good writer but this is just so-so." Mainly because I had heard so much hype for it and was feeling like I was going to get let down again by an over-hyped book of this style. It didn't take long for me to really love it though. He's just a good non-superfluous and fun writer and the book/story was simple yet extremely enjoyable. I kinda compare it to reading the Hobbit. By itself, it isn't some crazy complex or intricate story, but it sure is a fun, well-written book.

Misha,hoppersun, SchndlrsFist,quagmire02 have all read it as well. Probably a couple others.

Next year should be pretty solid though for some of my favorite book series/authors:

-Wise Man's Fear published in march
-Game of Thrones TV show starting around the same time on HBO
-ASoIaF Book 5 (A Dance With Dragons) will hopefully be published next year.

I too am looking forward to this. I'm finishing up the 4th book now.

On a side note I recently got on my parents Kindle account. My dad convinced me there's no reason to buy books multiple times and you can have up to 5 kindles on one account so now I have access to all my parents amazon books. 100+ since they got them last year. My dad's a big fantasy reader so I'm going to start knocking out a lot of those.

Going to probably start with some Terry Brooks (probably The Sword of Shannara Trilogy) after I finish Name of the Wind and A Feast for Crows.

Definitely! It sounds similar to the book you're reading now, and I love Sacks's writing; it's almost as though he were a writer before his love of science and neurology. Plus, it's filled with all these wonderful anecdotes in the footnotes.

i started reading the series from the beginning again when the original estimate for the final books was for them to be released at 6-month intervals (putting the final one to be released sometime around now) with the idea being that i would give it a full run-through

of course, now that the final book isn't set to be released until 2012, i'll probably never read it because i'm not sure i'll want to read the series a third time (and i'm not very good at just picking up an in-series book without having read the previous ones)

sanderson's books never really impressed me, but i'm HOPING that he's done a better job with the gathering storm and the towers of midnight than jordan did with the previous books...because they are soooooooooo slow

Good stuff, though I did not realize it was the middle book in a trilogy until just now when I googled it. Stands on its own of course. Need to read more Gibson, definitely.

@Khufu--sounds like you've been on a pretty heavy American Revolutionary kick--definitely some of the same topics I'm interested in. How are you liking Chernow's Hamilton? Any particular recommendations of what you've read of the era? Not sure if you're interested in later American history but Edmund Morris's biography of Theodore Roosevelt (unfinished, third and final volume comes out later this month) is one of my favorites.

Just finished reading the whole series. I read the first half of it or so whenever it was coming out originally (when I was a kid) but started it over a week ago and finished it in 4 or 5 days. Fucking amazing, so glad I went back and finished it.

I've got a new favorite author, David Liss. First two books centered around a character in 18th century London. IMO, he does an amazing job of giving you the history of the time without even getting close to being boring. The stories he tells are great as well. I've unfortunately managed to read the 3rd and 2nd books centered around this character (in that order ), but it doesn't seem to be a big deal as they aren't really a series. Benjamin Weaver (the main character in those books), is probably my new favorite character as well. Anyways...these are the two that I've read:

Which was an AWESOME book. It was a combination of a fictional novel about an extremist Mormon group in an isolated small town in Utah and a historical look at the "19th wife" of Brigham Young. Both were separate stories that, with the one about Brigham Young's wife being more historical, using excerpts from newspapers, her "autobiography", etc. Really really interesting read.

Also finally got around to reading:



Decent book. Not a great story, but very interesting to hear about the history of old wine. I would recommend if you're a wine connoisseur, but not if you're just looking for a good story.

Finished up Towers of Midnight. It was another long read (imagine that), but it was worth it. Sanderson finally tied up a bunch of the minor plot lines. There was much more action in this one and much less political posturing and longwinded descritions of food/dress. Only one more book to go and the series will finally be over.

Without a doubt my favorite book ever. Enjoy every page of it. It's amazing how a book that big can be a page turner. It's breadth is simply amazing.

I haven't read the sequel. I've heard a number of people say it took something away from the first one for them, and others say that it does it justice.

My girlfriend worships Pillars of the Earth. She kept buying it for her friends as gifts over the past 5 or 6 months and I'm like, "Bitch, when you going to buy that for me!!"
