^ i don't know that it's crap...there are parts throughout the 10 books i've read (i'm in the process of re-reading the series since it's been a couple of years and i'm hoping to finish just when the last book comes out) that i catch myself speed-reading through because i'm so caught up in what's going on (oddly, i read faster when i'm excited, instead of slower to better enjoy it)...i don't think the story is worse as the series progresses, there's just more useless filler

the only other series i've read that was this long (sword of truth) suffered from the same problem, though in a different way

as was noted by another user, there's waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many mentions of nynaeve tugging her damn braid

Kavalier and clay was fantastic! I hope you like it. I think I'm going to read the wizard of oz again. It's been years since I read it and it's a pretty quick read.

I've been putting it off. Wheel of Time aggravated me to the point that I had to take a break from fantasy for a while. Figured I better start it now, and all the good news from HBO has given me the last bit of encouragement.

yea WoT kinda put me in a rut with it to. But since I started reading fantasy/speculative fiction again, I have read a lot of good stuff (mostly previously mentioned in this thread) like Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind, Martin's stuff, Scott Lynch's Lies of Locke Lamora etc. Really excited for the sequel to The Name of the Wind.

I've never read anything by Sherwood Anderson before, but saw that Faulkner had some nice things to say about his importance as a modernist writer, and what I've read of this short story cycle/novel so far has been incredible. Almost like an American version of Dubliners.

About 30 pages from the end of

After recently doing a Friedman double-header:

I've read all of the Ender series and Shadow series, or so I thought until reading over the Ender Wikipedia entry I came across this, A War of Gifts, and Shadows in Flight (a new book OSC is writing).

Quote :
"Shadows in Flight is a yet-to-be-published science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card, which will link the Shadow Series back to the Ender Saga.
Very little about the book is known at this time; Card has announced it, but it is not known how much work he has done on this novel or even whether he has started it. Card has stated explicitly that Shadows in Flight will wrap up some of the plot threads left dangling in Shadow of the Giant. In an interview with SciFi.com, he also established that Flight would pick up where Children of the Mind (the final book in the Ender quartet) left off."

Also, Ender in Exile is book 19 of 52 for me this year.

Two chapters in and a little underwhelmed. Flipping ahead there is nothing here you won't find in Thomas Schelling's Micromotives and Macrobehaviors.

I am going to flip through it some more, but am 90% sure I am going to go trade this in for a collection of Iron Man comics.

i'm kind of disappointed i havent finished more books yet this year. i can only read one book at a time though or i get really confused i don't have much time during the week to read so i try to squeeze time in where i can. i've been staying up later reading in bed because i have so many on my "to read" list!

right now i'm reading gregory maguire's son of a witch. i'm not sure i like it as much as wicked but it's definitely been enjoyable. i may change my mind though! hopefully i'll be done in the next week or so.

For those of you who read The Name of the Wind, Just wanted to let you know that the follow-up book now has a publication date. Wish it was sooner but here it is, straight from Rothfuss' mouth:

The Wise Man’s Fear – March 1st 2011.

about 100 pages into

i really missed reading chapters about robb in a clash of kings. i was banking on getting some chapters in the third installment, but thus far that is not the case. other than that of course book 2 was great and 3 certainly is holding course.

^^ I think you'll love that. I loved GoT (maybe best opening book in a series I've ever read) and CoK really kept the pace going. SoS is huge (as you know) and at times can get a *tad* slow during the 1st half of the book. Especially if you are reading the books back to back to back like I did, you're pushing 3000 pages of the same story and writing style towards the end (my mind needed a break before heading into AFFC even though I loved all of what I had read haha).

But, if you feel yourself getting a little bored at all during the first 1/2 of SoS, just know that the second half is awesome.

just finished

about to start

tokyo vice was interesting. i had really high expectations and i ended up not liking the author as a person. but, the book is honest and pretty in your face at times. however, if you're mildly interested in reading this book, i'd suggest finding it at a bookstore (real crime section) & reading the last chapter (i think its called back on the beat)

that chapter was everything i was waiting for the book to get to! the book was interesting but the last chapter was the best. the author uncovered (& named) 4 japanese yakuza who came into the us illegally to get liver transplants at ucla. pretty wild stuff. one dude had permission but i won't go into details

the rest of the book is bascially him telling crazy stories about his life as an american reporter in tokyo, working for a japanese newspaper.
