Actually the Ninja 250 is about as much fun...I've talked to lots of folks that say they are a BLAST. And cheap to insure.

NCSUDiver just got one a couple of months ago. I think she really likes hers.

as far as morotcycle selection, 500 ninjas are fast enough to keep you involved for a while but forgiving enough to keep you from flippin over. 250 is good for starters, but only if you are willing to sell it a couple months down the road. 500 is not all that much scarier or bigger.

i wouldn't go any more than those...they are all PLENTY of performance for a first bike

and buy some leathers and wear them.



^yeah, you don't want any damned D&D exhaust. i wouldn't want a re-geared bike, either (particularly one with altered front AND rear sprockets...i guarantee he overdid it for anything other than popping wheelies)

and the extra helmets don't mean shit. that shouldn't even factor into your decision.

^tr00 tr00.. as well as gs500 or a gsxf600 katana if you dont mind the dumb looks. possibly an older handa vfr interseptor (might require more aintance depending on condition).

but a lil dual purpose 125 or 250 would be the best for learning. like a suzuki drz line or something. i have seen a few of em lil buggards around campus

Funny you say that Igor. I told her a friend of mine has a spare bike, a little dual-sport Suzuki 200. Absolutely perfect learner bike.

And having had some old school VFR Interceptors myself (750), the 500 model wou;d work very well for a starter bike.

Before you even consider of buying a motorcycle, go take the MSF course. They'll teach you the basics. Or atleast get Igor to teach you on his beatup hawk.

If you have a friend (or Igor) to help, you can learn on your own really fast. I learned accelerated MSF style. My roommate and I took it to an empty parking lot, and he pushed me first, then I practiced clutch/throttle for a few minutes (just rock it back and forth with the clutch and throttle at a standstill) then I just idled it around for a bit. The nice thing about bikes vs. cars is that bikes will usually idle around at low speeds without and throttle, so you don't even have to worry about that at first. If you practice basic control, you'll look a lot cooler at the MSF

Oh, and just a piece of advice...stay the hell out of Raleigh until you've ridden a while and built up your situational awareness. People do stupid crap in traffic, especially around college campuses. Learn to ride on back roads where there isn't as much traffic.

^^^ even if you have the self-control not to use all of the power, no beginner has good enough throttle control to ride a GSX-R well.

get something smaller and cheaper. learn to ride it well...take at LEAST 6 months. sell it for about what you bought it for, then buy something like that 4 year old GSX-R 600.

I have to agree with Duke on this one. A GSXR is in no way a good beginner's bike, especially if you've never ridden a motorcycle before. It's just not forgiving enough.

Keep in mind that the person that wants to learn to ride here, while in very good physical shape, is only around 105-110 lbs (my guess) and maybe not even that. She needs smaller, lighter, less power, and very maneuverable at low speeds.

None of the sportbikes I've ever ridden did any of that really well.

if i were starting out, i would get a cheap bike and some good gear, that way if you lay the bike down in gravel someone kicked up on the road, you wont give a shit about the bike, and you wont look like this:





it took about 6 weeks for my right hand for heal, and having your arm scab over to your chest every night for 2 weeks and having to get in the shower in the morning to peel it apart sucks

yeah get some gear, i've been in 4-5 wrecks/laydowns and besides some slight rash through the jeans and one time that i wasnt wearing gloves i have turned out just fine in all of them. picked up the bike and road away.. cept for the one time i flipped the r6 but i was able to walk away and was only a lil sore the next day.

Absolutely take the MSF course before you buy a bike. As zxappeal said, I bought a Ninja 250 back in April, and it is an awsome bike. I got it partially because it is cheap to insure and cheap to buy, and partially because I am 5'2" and was afraid of riding a heavier, taller bike on the road. However, after having ridden dirt bikes for a year and several hundred miles on the 250, I could easily handle something larger. If cost and insurance aren't a big issue, and you feel confident after finishing the MSF course, get a 500 or 600 so you won't outgrow it as quickly. I am eying the Ninja 650 next, but my boyfriend has a Yamaha FZ-6, that also seems like it would be a great bike. If you plan to just use it to commute or cruise around town, a 250 is perfect for that. It is when I head out to the Blue Ridge Parkway or try to get on an onramp that I wish I had more power. I couldn't be happier with it for my typical use of riding to and from work.

yeah I was looking at some bikes today in garner... I kinda like the naked look of some of them... But I feel the exact same way you do... I am really afraid i wont be able to hold myself up (I am 5'3) but I tried a few bikes out.. I think it would be great... I definately wouldn't mind taking my bike to CO and riding in the mountians with it... Very nice use of a bike

Also... anyone have any ideas on how to make sure it doesn't get stolen?
