You thought Atheism had nothing to do with Hitler? No no no, EVERYTHING has to do with Hitler.

Actually, DirtyGreek had already fulfilled the law halfway through the first page. And I'm fully aware that comparisons to nazis are cliche on the internet, but my analogy was apt. Apt, I say! Apt! Sorry you couldn't come up with a real answer.

You're right, DirtyGeek is the root of that one

Quote :
"nazism had a big part in building what germany is today. that doesn't mean that tradition is a GOOD thing. and no, I'm not comparing christianity to nazism, but the logic is the same. just because something helped your society be what it is today (and would you really argue that today's society is GOOD?) doesn't make it good in its own right.

society may or may not have come into being without religion - I'd say society is more about grouping together as humans to feel more together, and that's human nature. it's about more easy access to food, other people, and sex.

also, since when is something you decided not part of who you are? not only that, but how did I DECIDE to not believe in god? I didn't DECIDE not to believe in god, I just don't. Your arguments are silly.

and I agree with you about the label "atheist," that's why I call myself "somewhat of an atheist" or "sort of an atheist," etc. Atheists say they KNOW there's no god, just as theists say they know there IS a god. I don't KNOW there's not a god, I just don't think there is. I'm not exactly an agnostic either, however, because agnostics believe that god can neither be disproven or proven. God can very easily be proven, though not as easily disproven, but either way, I'm neither atheist nor agnostic."

And I'm sure your argument was entirely Apt...

I'm sorry too. Sorry that you still think you're arguing something here

Comparing a given subject to past Nazi actions or beliefs is quite logical. It may be tired and cliche,
but it makes a lot of sense to bring something up that everybody can agree was wrong. Especially
since you know everybody is going to nitpick the flaws of any analogy there is a comfort in using
Hitler and his ilk, afterall who is going to defend Hitler ? Anyway limiting cases are useful in analyzing
theories, that is essentially what Hitler gives us, a limiting case for evil, the slippery slope but for real.

What's the name of the law that says as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of someone posting a picture with a sarcastic caption added approaches one?

This is why it's bad, people think it's some get of jail free card or something. For the most part people won't pick that kind of argument apart even though it should be. The situation in Germany was a complicated one, with the situation just right for the nazi party to take control, and because of this it's seriously not applicable to most all comparisons.

Most people want to believe Hitler was a pure evil demigod rather than a human that was mentally deranged

this is true. ppl don't want to accept the fact that they might have ordered the killing of millions of jews if they had been in the same situation. Hitler was an ordinary, rational human being (up until a point at least).

I guess being a republican means you must follow your leader blindly without first evaluating rather or not they are doing a good job. I guarantee if Hitler were a republican president, half the rednecks around here would have a "Adolf 04" stickers on their truck from the last election."
