Unrated WR Anthony Smith committed yesterday. He is out of Huntington, MD. Had a 4.58 laser timed 40 yard dash and has a sub-11 second 100 yard dash. We were his first Power 5 offer. He also has offers from Navy, UMass, Merrimack, and Rhode Island, and was also receiving interest from UCONN and North Alabama.

I like that we're getting some more WR recruits in, but Anthony's signing in particular makes me a little nervous. Reeks of a kid who committed *just* because we were his first P5 offer and will decommit if his trajectory increases and he gets some more offers.

That being said, I hope he stays and does great things with us

Well, most if not all of these recruits will be signing in less than a month, so I don't think that's much of an issue at this point in the game.

That’d be a bigger concern if he was a junior. He’s a senior. His season is almost over. He’ll sign soon. Not much time left for him to blow up

^Depends on how you define "blow up".

This is going to be when programs start to scramble a bit when they miss on the late commits or have their current commits flip/decommit.

It's why you always see committed players picking up a flood of new offers in December and NR guys popping up to 3* recruits with decent late offer lists.

Seems like the guys that don’t sign in December will really stand to benefit from that as teams scramble after that early signing period.

^This happens in football and basketball, and it's why all of a sudden these uncommitted kids pop up late just before signing day that go from NR/2* up to high-end 3* guys and low-end 3* kids jump up to 4* recruits.

I remember Jakobi Meyers being a 3* QB that all of a sudden late in the cycle lands an offer from UF and ESPN bumps him up to 4*. I also think this tends to hurt the kids because some of these dudes are ranked correctly and then they end up at schools that they are probably never going to contribute/play at because they are just filling last minute spots and end up recruited over a year later.

Can't blame a kid jumping on a top-25 program offer though, would be hard to turn down programs like Bama, Clemson, UGA, etc.

WR Chris Scott committed this morning. He’s a 3*, previously committed to Eastern Kentucky. Sounded like he picked us over Vanderbilt.

Also kicker Ian Williams committed over the weekend.

Scott apparently has been clocked in the 4.3's as far as 40 yd dash goes at multiple camps/combines. Plays in the highest division of Georgia HS football. Supposedly the knock on him is that he is really, really lean....6'0 150-160 pounds type lean. I imagine he will come in, redshirt a year and then be ready to go in 2021 15-20 pounds heavier.

That wasn't Hux fallout.

Payne has been committed since around July.
He recently got offered by Nebraska.
He took an OV to Nebraska.
He had Nebraska's coaches in for an in-house.
He had NC State coaches in for an in-house.
He took an OV to NC State.

Before leaving on his OV he told the staff that he still wasn't sure where he would sign. Our staff told him they were done recruiting him(don't blame them). Still think he has a committable offer if he sends his NLI in, but that our coaches aren't going to reach out or talk to him.

I'd consider him a Nebraska commit but he seems like a kid that just is enjoying the recruiting attention.

I am incredibly disappointed to lose a player with the name Pheldarius Payne.

Negative cred for DD. Even if Payne sucks, you gotta have a name like that on the roster.

^They've got limited resources and two or three years worth of recruiting classes to keep up with.

Just like a salesman for pretty much any company, it's best to know when to cut bait and move on. Chatting up a tease who will probably not commit is just a frustrating waste of time.

Yeah, Top 35 classes dont work around here. Top 20 or bust...since, you know, we are historically that good of a program and have been on that level for the majority of the last 20 years.

Wait....you mean 2018 and 2019 classes were the best back to back classes since recruiting services have been a thing?! Fire his ass because of it!

HAHA, this has to be a trolling attempt, correct?

We recruit the kid for a while.
He commits in July.
Our staff stays in contact throughout the entire season.
Nebraska comes in late with an offer.
He then OV's to Nebraska.
He then OVs to NC State.

After being committed to our staff for 4 months, having our staff in-house, coming for an OV, and his response is he isn't sure where he'll sign at? Fuck that, I wouldn't waste time with that kid either. What else could they even say to a kid to recruit him at that point? They've already spelled everything out over the last 4+ months, if he still isn't sure, then move on and find someone who is sure they want to be here.

A JUCO DE isn't going to make or break this class, regardless of how great his name is.

...Seriously?

This is like dating a girl for 4 months and then her going on a date with another guy and then telling you she's "not sure who she wants to be with" between the two of you. You either keep hanging around begging her to pick you or you move on because there are other fish in the sea.

I'm glad Doeren and Co told that dude they were done recruiting him. If it took 2 weeks of contact from Nebraska to make the kid re-think his commitment, then he wasn't all-in to begin with.

but it isn't really like dating at all.

teams have lots of different coaches and people on staff, lots of resources, and are capable of recruiting more than 1 player at a time. i understand the staff being frustrated and maybe the staff already knew the tides were shifting and he wasn't likely to stick with State. i get that. but if a player is good enough and you think you have a chance to land him, you keep recruiting him. maybe the staff simply didn't think Payne was good enough to warrant the extra work and time and uncertainty. that's fair enough...but i don't think it's as simple as "he didn't wanna sign so we dropped him". i think more goes into that decision.

i think every recruit is different. if the player is good enough, you'll keep recruiting him. if he's a borderline guy, then the staff may decide it's not worth it.

and this decision to move on from Payne isn't made in a vacuum. the staff knows what their other options at that position are...maybe this is a risk they are willing to take due to other factors.

Ya dms has it. Dating is not at all a good analogy. Maybe tv show The Bachelor style dating, but not normal.

Coaches wouldn't stop recruiting him bc they are fed up as you imply, it's a complex risk/reward calculation. If they stopped recruiting him its most likely bc they with realized nothing they could do would increase their chances, and/or he wasn't worth the effort/risk of focusing on him instead of someone else.

That paragraph is prob just rewording DMSs post BUT STILL

that's our place in college football...can't be too terribly surprised to lose a guy UGa. not that it makes it any better. but if a player is gonna flip - at least they're flipping to a clearly better program instead of losing them to UNC or somebody like that.

I’m not a recruiting expert but here’s my opinion. Overall, in a vacuum, this class isn’t that bad. This class feels disappointing because we have lost the recruiting momentum that came with good on field success in ‘17 and ‘18 and good recruiting classes in ‘18 and ‘19. UNC has the recruiting momentum because all coaches get a nice recruiting bump in their first full class (and on field improvement helps them too). Our on-field performance this year surely didn’t help our recruiting. And some of the guys we felt confident about earlier (Mushin III, for example) didn’t come to State.

I’m not trying to put lipstick on a pig, I do think it’s fair to call this class a disappointment. I think it’s hyperbole to act like this class is a complete disaster.

Don't know who the fuck this guy is but to add to DMS
Quote :
"Just took a look at NC State's football recruiting class. Optics are bad because of some decommits but it is still a solid class. Very few headlining top end guys, but also very few low end guys.
In fact, by 247's composite rating system, as of today this class has fewer players rated below 85.00 than any NC State class in 247's system (going back to '02).
For comparison, TOB's entire 2011 recruiting class was rated below 85.00."

-@No23Sports

^and UNC was kinda setup to kick our butts, maybe not as bad as they did, but many intangibles were in their favor.
