Several things about stories like these really piss me off. I never understand why news media always "Nacny Grace" stories. For anyone who has never seen Nancy Grace, you won't know what I'm talking about. Basically, if you die (the more horrible the death the better) and are:
1. White
2. Female
3. Attractive

she will not only cover your story daily, but also make it her personal mission to hunt down the killer.

It seems to me that even the local news subscribes to this and its pissing me off. Almost all the news websites i've looked at have some sort of photo album of this girl who "had it all". I dare say that if I get shot on the way home today, there will be no albums of my ugly ass nor any stories about the "guy who was just like everyone else"

Black people have to be famous to get media coverage when they die. And quite often, the media coverage is negative, like with Sean Taylor, where they pretty much said his murder was his own fault... because of his past. Then when they caught the murderers and proved everyone wrong, the media just completely did away with all the coverage.

I haven't seen or heard any national media coverage of this murder, but I felt that all the local media coverage I've seen has been appropriate. Maybe it doesn't hurt that she's "white, female and attractive", but more relevant is that she was the Student Body President of a major university, and certainly the post prestigious public university in the area. That fact alone would make the front pages, regardless of her personal attributes.


I do not think it is fair to group this case into the other cases that Nancy Grace and her ilk cover, like the Aruba kidnapping thing a couple years ago, which clearly was just another case of "pretty white girl gone missing"

i cant stand Nancy Grace's show.

this is the Student Body President of a significant and well-known major university -- of course it's newsworthy -- but i wouldnt say we're being overwhelmed with it.

admittedly, i dont really watch much cable news. because of idiots like Nancy Grace. so i dont know how its being played up there.

^^^^ umm, yeah. that's my point. If the SBP of any top-10 public university is killed, then it is national news, at least for a short time. Nothing wrong with that. If the SBP is black, white, asian, male, female, whatever - that's big news.

if a "normal student" is killed at a university, though, that's just not national-newsworthy, and it usually isn't except for extraordinary circumstances like an especially brutal killing or multiple killings or whatever.

Shit man, I'm a white male so i can say without a doubt that this is not about me being angry about her being white. If a cute black girl existed and they did a story about her, i'd be pissed too. The point is, they do the story because everyone goes "awww, such a tradgedy that this girl that had it all is dead". Then they show a bunch of pictures and video of her over and over for some reason.

It doesn't bother me that they do the stories, what bothers me is that they really really want to make you care. Its like a parent breaking out the photo album for you. Its susposed to be NEWS not Oprah.

ABC's World News didn't report the UNC or Auburn murders on at least two 6:30 p.m. EST broadcasts even after news broke of the tragic events. This is probably because some "progressive" producer complained that they don't cover every murder in Iraq or every murder in inner-city areas or some such.

Frankly, I am not focused on why the news media is or isn't covering this story--that can happen later. I want this scumbag hunted down and executed--immediately.

The last time I can remember someone being killed in chapel hill was outside of Avalon a year or two ago. And that was a pretty easy case to solve.
