Tell me what you love about TMG. I have only heard a few songs from this band and have decided to explore deeper. I am currently listening to the latter works (studio albums Tallahassee to Heretic Pride) and am really enjoying John Darnielle's sound. I love the folksy genre more than anything. What are some must haves of TMG, and others in this genre? And what do you love about TMG?
of course No Children was the very first song i heard and it's still one of my favorites. 7/31/2009 9:21:30 AM |

well he lives in durham for one thing. his wife basically lost my friend a job (no fault of her own, but she got hired to replace him and someone else).
i have a soft spot for "wild sage" and "golden boy" personally 7/31/2009 9:30:12 AM |

I love the older low-fi songs, but Get Lonely is amazingly awesome. 7/31/2009 10:37:11 AM |

They Mountain Goats put on one of the best live shows I've seen. John Darnielle is so passionate about the music and this shows in his performances. He's extremely friendly and really fun to watch.
My favorite album is The Sunset Tree by far. Probably one of my top 5 albums of all time.
If you can, track down the Moon Colony Bloodbath EP he did with John Vanderslice. It's great. 7/31/2009 12:03:11 PM |

ha, I was a dj at the time and I remember saying everyday that we need to either get rid of the mountain goats songs or change them to different ones.
regardless I enjoyed when he played for the knc show a few years ago. 7/31/2009 1:24:01 PM |

Just a few of my favorites that I could find on youtube, there are way more but I guess they aren't that popular like "The Day The Aliens Came" and "Alpah Sun Hat" and "Alpha Desperation March". 7/31/2009 3:53:40 PM |

Actually, this is a much better version of House Guest, although John in a batman costume owns.

His lyrics are top notch. I'd say second to none, in regards to contemporary artists.
My favorite song/performance of his isn't an original, though. His cover of 'The Sign' is full of joyous fury or furious joy, either way it melts despair. 8/1/2009 1:58:06 PM |

Saw them in Saxapahaw last weekend. It was a good show, we had fun, but I just can't really get into most of the stuff they've put out in the last 10 years or so (basically since they've been on Merge). Early 2000s was their (his) prime, imo. I like John Wurster & Matt Douglas, but I prefer when it was just John and a boom box (and occasionally Peter Hughes)
I have enjoyed both of Darnielle's novels. 12/11/2019 1:50:49 PM |

I thought for the longest time John Darnielle was 30 something and then one I see him and on facebook talking about magic the gathering cards and found he was 52 and my life got turned upside down. 12/11/2019 11:53:38 PM |
