^^ I think that was best-case. Insider speculations I'd read ranged from less than 10, up to a max of maybe 20, depending on whom you asked.

Give it to Patrick McHenry and let's move on. Jim Jordan would be a disaster.

^^^^ from what I’ve read, there is a block who opposes him who plans to have one or two more defect on every vote.

I’m not quite sure why that way instead of just all voting against him to start with

Sure, obviously.

But it seems like making him look like a hopeless, futile effort immediately would be better, given the time pressure building to get things sorted out.

I guess that bipartisanship is a non-starter for the current House GOP.

https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2023/10/19/congress/empower-mchenry-dead-00122543

Quote :
"House Republicans are abandoning a push to empower a temporary speaker, Rep. Patrick McHenry, after it faced fierce pushback within the party on Thursday.

As they left a nearly four-hour internal meeting about the idea, multiple Republicans said there was... virtually no path forward...

'It certainly does not have the support in conference and to bring it to the floor. It would have to survive with Democratic votes,' Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) said. 'We're currently sitting on a tinderbox. So to do that, it would set off the fuse that would certainly end in civil war within the GOP, and I don't believe that anybody wants to do that.'"

Trump said “nope”, because Emmer hasn’t been completely limitless in his support for him, and a couple dozen MAGAs grabbed his pocket like little bitches.

I’m gonna laugh my ass off when the mainstream-ish Republicans accept that stupid MAGAs will never accept anything except a coup for one of their own, and they all say “you’re not gonna wag the dog. fuck this and fuck all of you for fucking up the only thing the party had going. Again.”

“Yo Hakeem, you wanna help us castrate some douchebag MAGAs?”

I think enough of them are self aware. It’s just a matter of the political calculus.

What are they more scared of? Continuing paralysis in the House? Being held hostage by a minority of douchebag MAGAs? Benign punished in the general election for all of this?

…Or primaries and being cast as a RINO by Trump, and probably some bad blood generated among fellow party members who are not even full-fledge MAGA cultists.

They had a chance to strike a heavy blow to the MAGA cult, too, but instead they enabled them and aggravated the problem that they and the country continue to suffer from.

^^mea culpa, I saw that this morning and assumed it meant 10/26 but it was posted on 10/26, figured there first act was voting on some resolution. Guess your interpretation of referencing the speaker election makes way more sense.

No problem. I think if that kind of vote happened, we'd hesr about it on more than just Twitter / X. There was no good leader candidate among the Republican ranks, and certainly no one who could have been elected who wouldn't have had some historically unpalatable policy positions as viewed by Democrats, but we need to pretend we have a functional government.

And to the shock of absolutely nobody, Republicans rally late to prove they have absolutely zero desire to govern or hold anyone accountable for criminal behavior.

I think most people want that guy gone...votes to keep him were mostly votes for adhering to process, not for Santos himself.

Vivek is a joke

Tim Scott has no charisma

Nikki Haley is the gops best choice. She’s opportunistic but in a fairly normal way for politicians. She’s a shrewd campaigner though
