There are three requirements for the attachment of a security interest in collateral:

1) A security agreement
2) Value must be given by the secured party
3) The debtor must have rights in the collateral.

The security agreement generally must be in writing and must show an intent to create a security interest. It must be authenticated by the debtor, though a signature is not required (any symbol intended to authenticate the record will work), and the agreement must contain a description of the collateral that is sufficient to "reasonably identify" the collateral.
