"NC State athletic director Debbie Yow announced Sunday that the 1989 men's basketball team will be awarded the inaugural "Wolfpack Unlimited" award prior to Tuesday's meeting with rival North Carolina.

The award will recognize individuals and teams that refuse to accept the status quo and exhibit the "never give up" spirit of the Wolfpack, the school said in a release.

Sunday's announcement comes less than 24 hours after Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta, both members of the 1989 team, were ejected from NC State's 76-62 loss to Florida State by referee Karl Hess Saturday."

Debbie Yow gets NC State fans. That's the only explanation I can think of.

next time Hess comes to the ESA RBC Center PNCA, we should get every student to yell "KARL YOU SUCK" over and over again. He can't toss out the whole arena, can he?

NC State officials are convinced that Hess wouldn't have thrown out a famous North Carolina or Duke alum. Of course we will never know that to be true and that only plays into the inferiority complex that the Pack often get painted with in the Triangle, inside the shadow of its two rivals.

Nevertheless, Yow wants to have a face-to-face meeting with ACC coordinator of officials John Clougherty in the conference office in Greensboro. Yow wants an answer and is hoping she can get one in person."

We should mass produce signs with a picture of Hess blowing a whistle with the text "KARL HESS BLOWS" (or maybe just "KARL BLOWS").

Gottfried says that to get the harder schedule they had to buy out of contracts and enter into others, and overall spending money to get harder games.

Yow was nervous but very supportive overall.

^4 The committee clearly valued SOS this year. While it sucks not being able to pile up wins like UVA did with their joke OOC schedule, it paid off for State with a better than expected seed and favorable 1st round matchup.

"I am writing this response today to a group of special Wolfpackers who are passionate about the 'Pack and who have contacted me.

Many of you have voiced a feeling of distrust for the fairness and impartiality of officiating as related to State basketball.

I wanted to share with you a few updates of our communications with the ACC office, since that is the single most often voiced question.

1. The Commissioner and I most recently met at the ACC Tournament in Atlanta. Before the Tournament, we talked by phone.

2. Regarding the ejection of two former players at the RBC and the initials of that official being on the shoes of officials throughout the opening game of the ACC Tournament, the Commissioner has heard clearly my concerns regarding these matters. As you know, the official was reprimanded and the Commissioner indicated that neither he nor the ACC director of officials was aware that having the initials on the shoes was going to happen.

3. We have begun addressing the widely held view of officiating inconsistencies in the UNC game and will work with Coach Gottfried on that, once we get to a place where we have the ability to focus on it. Right now, we are preparing the film of missed calls/no calls to send to the Director of Officiating at the ACC for his review and feedback.

4. Coach Gottfried has no recollection of being cursed at by an official during the heat of the tournament game. I understand that two media sources tweeted that this occurred and I know the quote they attributed to the official. We will follow up with each media person to seek further details and then share all of that information with the ACC.

5. I have also addressed other issues with the conference such as the bb gun statement made by an opposing coach and the quote regarding how ACC officials "study team tendencies", something that was disconcerting to a number of fans and to us.

I know you care deeply about your Wolfpack and want you to know that we are expressing our concerns. That is why I wanted to take time to share more detail with you today.

I am so pleased that through adversity we have played our way back into the NCAA Tournament where we belong. I am also proud of our dedicated fan base that is made up of terrific Wolfpackers like you.

Debbie"

i don't know about the "team tendencies", but the bb gun incident refers to a rant Roy went on about UNC fans selling tickets to other team's fans, and those fans being close to the coaches wives and saying "negative things". and how he has no use for the unc fans. and he remembers watcing an ncsu/unc game many years ago, and there were lots of red shirts in the crowd, and he would have liked to shoot them all in the ass.

bb gun = Roy made some statement about having State fans in the stands at unc games and he would shoot them and give them red backsides or something? A little strange, but nothing seriously harmful

tendencies = A current/past (?) referee said they study tapes and find that certain teams/players have a tendency to not commit fouls, so that's why it seems the officiating is biased. Terrible explanation. either you foul or you don't on any given play

^^^roy said he'd like to shoot opposing fans with a BB gun and an ACC official said they study tape to determine how players play to be "prepared" for them.

that is absolutely unbelievable, not only if that's actually what happens, but that it's taking an AD of an ACC school to bring it up with the conference. what a joke the ACC is with referees who actively pursue the removal of objectivity from a game before tip off. makes me sick. it blows my mind that someone would give that as a response to claims of being biased and completely fail to see how it just proves that you're biased.

^yep. if you already have pre-conceived notions, then won't that affect your decisions? Kind of like a trial... as a juror, you're not supposed to have a lot of knowledge about the case until it begins and when it does, you only consider the information heard in court. now why is officiating different? the refs are supposed to be impartial decision makers, based on what is presented to them on the court.

the guy who evaluates officials went on the record with that quote. i almost want to write the ACC an angry letter about how he's making a mockery of the conference by telling the world its referees go into games with an agenda, but i doubt it'd do anything but fall on deaf ears.

it's great that Debbie Yow is going to the ACC head of officials with all these complaints, but I doubt he'll do anything with it. She needs to take it up with swofford. but he probably wouldn't do anything either

here's the quote, and it's not a big deal. The article basically says Carolina is coached not to foul, ever, and other teams don't mind if players do foul. I don't see the big deal with Clougherty's comment.

^you don't? i certainly do. you don't need to study a team and their tendencies to call fouls. it's either a foul or it isn't. scouting teams and their tendencies to commit fouls is blatantly un-impartial.

Right, if you look for tendencies and come to the conclusion that "UNC is trained to never foul, ever" then you immediately walk into the game with a bias. If you see a close call (one that may or may not be a foul or could go either way) then a ref is likely to think, "That's not a foul, UNC is trained never to foul, ever."

While on the other hand, if you see a player committing a similar type of foul fairly consistently and you see them do it in a way that might not be a foul, you're likely to blow your whistle because "he usually fouls when he does that." And once the whistle is blown, you have to stand behind it.
