I wouldn't even call it a "free pass".

She hired a coach that got us to the Sweet 16 with the same team that only won 15 games last year, and his first recruiting class is in the top 3 in the country. Lots of cred to the coach, but just as much to the AD for hiring him.

She started with the sport that historically we're most known for, it is absolutely fine if it takes a little longer for the other sports to get attention. They all benefit from the money that will come pouring in from better bball and football programs, not to mention the media deals.

I've heard good things about Yow's handling of non-revenue sports, too. Heard she was instrumental in getting the ball rolling for the clubhouse for the centennial golf course and in pushing along the renovation of the track facilities. Then again, I thought the track stuff started during Jed's tenure...

Success in football and bball = success in other sports. Pick a non-revenue sport, and I'd bet 80% of the best schools have good revenue sports

I love Yow.

you can check rankings in basically all sports on the ncaa website, we were actually ranked in a few of the non-revenue sports to my surprise.

- Worked with Coach Gottfried on b-ball schedule and agreed to spend $$$ to make it tougher

And not team-specific related, but..

- Re-branded the university as "STATE"
- Scored us a 10-year media contract that will pay us $50 million

I didn't know the ACC splits any money a particular school gets for a bowl or tourney appearance between all the schools. Sounds like...dare I say it...socialism

I'm pretty sure they take operating costs of going to the bowl off the top before any splitting.

The revenue sharing stuff is why we should pull for ACC teams to make bowls and go deep in the NCAAs (other than UNC of course).

Can the other 11 schools in the ACC sue UNC for being banned from a bowl as it could reduce our revenue

it'd ridiculous that unc still gets bowl money from the acc despite their bowl ban.

Y'all are acting like UNC would have gotten a bowl bid anyways. I rather think the bowl ban is little more than a formality. There's no way they were going to a bowl this coming season.

wlb420, yes you are correct I think on that my mistake.

Teams do lose money still though if they cant sell enough tickets. Ive seen estimates that it can cost about $1 million to send a team to a bowl game.

Teams have to buy a set number of tickets and if they don't sell them they basically eat the cost. aka Wake Forest. We actually asked for more tickets this years bowl game.

she also said that the NCAA only pays for 75 people (coaches, players, cheerleaders, band, admin) for NCAA Bball trips, and they end up over the 75 people and have to eat the cost. meaning they don't get reimbursed off the top before the money goes to the conference.

http://www.basketballelite.com/index.php/college-basketball/the-ncaa-tourney-money-game/56

so you get paid for making the tournament but going deep doesnt mean anything as far as money goes that year but it does for the next six years?

No, the conference gets rewarded for each win its teams get, but for whatever reason the final win doesn't do anything.

Quote :
"So every time a team wins and plays another game, the conference earns another money unit.

...

That means the ACC will benefit in next year’s payout from the 2005 and 2009 runs of UNC and the 2010 run of Duke. "

I don't get why winning the whole thing does nothing, but whatever

^^ Think of it as the conference getting paid for each game you play in, not each game you win. You're really getting money for making it to the next game. It makes sense, the money comes from the TV deals so your'e getting paid for being on TV more.

You don't get more money for winning the championship because you don't get to be on TV again after winning.

"N.C. State has completed a four-year, $7 million shoe and apparel deal with adidas, which will outfit all of the Wolfpack's sports teams.

The German sneaker company had a previous deal with the football and men's basketball teams but the new deal will cover the entire athletic department, which ends up saving the school between $900,000 and $1 million a year from its previous deals with a variety of shoe and apparel companies.

Included in the adidas deal is an annual cash payment of $425,000, which, in part, is used as supplemental income for football coach Tom O'Brien and men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried. O'Brien receives $360,000 in supplemental compensation, according to his contract, and Gottfried receives $450,000.

The supplemental pay for the top two coaches is comprised of money from the apparel deal and the media contract. N.C. State signed a new, 10-year multimedia deal with Capitol Broadcasting and Learfield Sports, worth $49 million, in March."

I personally like Adidas. I won't wear any Nike products simply for the fact that Carolina and Duke wear them and Nike does all that Jordan stuff (and I strongly dislike Jordan as well).

I dont think Adidas is bad because if you look at the other schools that use them (Indiana, Nebraska, Tenn., Wisconsin, UCLA, etc) they can produce nice stuff, we just havent had anyone to hold them accountable for the shit theyve given us the last decade.

I also think whoever decided to "update" Tuffy should be kicked right in the nuts. Updating our logo constantly gives us no stable branding. Im all for bringing back the old mean looking tuffy vs the goofy bastard we use now and bring back the slobbering wolf just for shits and giggles.

Stick with those two mascots, a consistent color red, just "STATE" on everything and I think a lot of problems would be solved...

adidas has been using the hell out of this.

And you may have noticed that since d. yow's athletic department shakeup the merchandise quality has changed dramatically. At least I have.

[Edited on April 25, 2012 at 11:54 AM. Reason : If I'm gonna buy a state polo, it's not gonna be made by nike/adidas anyways]

why not?

Adidas are perfectly capable of making nice polo shirts. Their golf ones are great. I just don't see why they have to put out shit with awkward black accenting and/or stripes down the side.

with NC State textile dept being one of the best in the world, i see no reason why we need addidas/nike/Ed hardy, we should come up with our own shoe/apparel brand and offer other universities to use our brand to make monies!
