I'd put S1 of Dexter up against any season of The Wire but collectively The Wire owns it. Dexter just got tired and the writers kind of ran out of ideas

kind of the same as what happened to 24, there's only so much you can do with those shows but they start off amazing

Never watched The Wire, but Dexter is amazing. Check it out, its a pretty quick watch, plus only 4 seasons are on DVD. Pretty quick from start and finish.

How many seasons is The Wire? Is it on Instant Watch? I might look into it

The wire runs circles around Dexter. The first season of Dexter was a great show, but the last few seasons have gone a little overboard. The Wire is by far my favorite HBO show, with Sopranos being a close second.

The Wire.

I'm a huge Dexter fan, but IMO it's not even close.

it is NOT on netflix instant.

Agree Wire > Dexter.

But Dexter seasons 1-2 are on instant watch so. Queue up the wire, and watch dexter on the days between discs

Yeah, I think S1 of Dexter is awesome. I'm not saying it's better than any season of The Wire but it's definitely up there if we're only comparing standalone seasons. The beauty of The Wire is seeing all the characters progress throughout the series and while each season is good on its own, its collective and consistent high level is what makes it so good.

Since The Wire isn't on instant watch, you should watch Dexter on there, and get The Wire discs at the same time.

And I know it's blasphemy to rank a show over The Wire but I think I enjoyed Deadwood more. I love that show.

The wire because they probably say shit bird more than on dexter. Also it makes every drama in the history of television look like family guy in comparison

To be honest...you should really just watch them both. Though if you want to watch the whole series obviously go with The Wire...you'll catch up w/Dexter alot faster and be pissed you have to wait for more

Not really related to this debate but related to The Wire:
Quote :
"Honestly, we’ve been sort of worried for Dominic West, whose career post-The Wire thus far has included supporting roles in Punisher: War Zone and a Johnny English sequel—sort of the actor’s equivalent of getting busted down to the harbor patrol. But now it seems West may have discovered the shipping container full of Eastern European prostitutes that could be his ticket back into the big leagues: a starring role on the BBC drama The Hour, which is being described as the “British equivalent to Mad Men.” The “suave and sexy” six-part series evokes the same retro-cool with its 1956 setting, taking place behind the scenes of a popular news show as three journalists become involved in a murder mystery while dealing with their equally complicated love triangle and the shifting gender politics that marked the decade. A Mad Men-esque British period piece starring one of the guys from The Wire? When will they release this thing so we can start slobbering all over it? Seriously, though, it sounds good."

I thought that was pretty funny and this show looks intriguing.

The Wire....By far one of the best TV series ever...

Granted season 2 was the weakest (still good though), but after S2 it's very hard not to watch 3-5 episodes in a row a day to finish the series...

Be careful if you live in wolf creek and download it (downloaded it in 2007), HBO will send you a letter..

I love season 2 and it's expanded scope with the docks and the Greek/Prop Joe, I thought the last season was the weakest (it felt like David Simon's personal vendetta against The Baltimore Sun and the McNulty serial killer storyline was out of control)...but a weak season of The Wire is still fucking gold.

Did one of the writers of Dexter investigate serial killers for 30 years in the city its set in? Did the other writer write for that city's newspaper for 30 years?

Season 2 got a lot of undeserved criticism. People fell in love with the dope dealer / crime nature of the first season and assumed the show was about inner city grinding, when the show was about the city of Baltimore itself. By season 3, the concept of the show became more apparent to people and they began to fall in love with it again. Going back, I though season 2 did more to develop the show and make it so great. Without season 2 providing the character development and insight into the intricate global organized crime that occurs in a major port city, the rest of the show wouldn't have been as good.

I see what you're getting at but David Simon did not write for The Baltimore Sun for 30 years, it might have been half of that.

It was 13 years per Wikipedia, but your point about the writers of The Wire actually living the shit they write about is a valid one all the same.

the wire by a mile. and i watch dexter (but honestly the last couple seasons have been pretty downhill).

and i think this might be the most agreement i've ever seen in a tww entertainment thread.

The John Lithgow season of Dexter (Season 4 I think)...was my favorite TV Show season ever. Still haven't watched any of The Wire.
