I'm preying they do not hire Ron Rivera. I would like him to hold the defense of the chargers togther. Also, I would like to actually see an offensive minded coach in Charlotte.

so basically we learned:

- Panthers are going to pick Luck, assuming he comes out this year
- Panthers probably won't go after Harbough. I like him, but oh well. He has no NFL coaching experience either.
- Big Cat is pretty cocky with his new young heart, but thats fine with me.

Heard the Cowboys are now after Harbaugh too.

Jason Garrett in Carolina? I'd take it.

so am i crazy, or did JR say today that he's never spoken to jim harbaugh? wasn't harbaugh on the roster at one point, and hasn't JR always been the owner?

or was he just trying to be a smartass? surely the owner has met all his players at one point

Harbaugh was the backup QB for a few games a number of years ago...never took a snap...pretty sure Big Cat was talking about he'd never spoken to him in a hiring-a-new-coach sense but I dunno

Quote :

Sources: Panthers to pick Andrew Luck

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck decides to enter the 2011 draft, the Carolina Panthers will take him, two high-ranking team officials said Tuesday.

ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay says he will grade Stanford QB Andrew Luck as high as any QB prospect over the last 10 years.

A redshirt sophomore, Luck finished his season in Monday night's Discover Orange Bowl and has until Jan. 15 to declare if he will enter the draft. Although there have been reports indicating Luck may choose to stay in college, the Panthers remain optimistic he will turn pro.

Luck is viewed as the top prospect in the country by most draft analysts and the Panthers don't disagree with that assessment. The team officials said they wouldn't even consider trading down in the draft if Luck is available.

Luck deflected questions on his future after Stanford's victory Monday night.

"I think there are a lot of worse decisions you might have to make in life," Luck said. "I don't mean to be rude, but I'd rather not address that subject anymore."

There has been some speculation that Luck and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh could be a package deal. But in a news conference Tuesday to discuss the coaching search, Carolina owner Jerry Richardson said the team has not had any contact with Harbaugh. The team officials said they don't expect that to change.

The Panthers already have requested permission to interview San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera and New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Although the team officials said they won't rule out candidates from the college ranks, they said the hire likely will be an NFL coordinator.

Been hearing alot of speculation that if Luck comes out, he will likely pull an Eli with the Panthers and make the Panthers trade down and not pick him.

Broncos fans out here in Denver feel like that was what Elway's presence was all about at the Orange Bowl.... Of course, broncos fans are a strange, self-inflated bunch.

2 1st rounders one of which is the 2nd overall? I'm a Broncos fan and I laugh at that. Then I think with Brian Xanders as GM they would possibly go for it

Elway was named Executive VP of Football Operations today though

I agree with PFT's take on Elway's hiring that its kind of an insult to other GMs who have worked their way up the latter. Success on the field does not translate to success in a personnel position...look at Isaiah Thomas, Michael Jordan, etc. I'll be interested to see how he handles it.

I'd laugh at it also, but since the Panthers want Luck, to take him from the Panthers you need to give up more than what they think he's worth.

The Manning for Rivers trade was 2 first rounders (one of which was 4th overall) and a 3rd and 5th rounder.

^^^ Yeah that is pretty stupid. It's not like we're the Lions, Browns, or Bills.

Plus we're in the NFC South, where nobody stays at the top or at the bottom.

over the last 4 years, ALL 4 teams have won the division, and ALL 4 teams have finished last in the division. That's ridiculous fluctuation.

Good article on what Luck should be thinking about and how much money he could lose by not going out now:

^Actually based on that I'd say next we should have
First: Bucs Last: Falcons

Which I could see the Bucs being first next year(started 10 rookies this season and won 10 games) but I could only see the Falcons dropping to last if Matt Ryan goes down preseason or in the first game or two.

I could see it happening realistically even with Ryan playing. If it's a year like 2008 and the entire NFC South is strong, with the last place team at 8-8.

I really hate Jerry Richardson and his whole attitude towards the team. Hes gotta be one of if not the biggest cheapskate in the nfl. Instead of using all of the cash they bring in from the panthers to line the pockets of his family, he could turn it around and invest it into the team by hiring a slamdunk coach who would ignite the team and fanbase. We have a lot of young, talented pieces on our roster, you would think that potential coaches would want to come here. Instead they see a cheapass owner who isnt willing to pay an extra dime for a quality free agent and know that he isnt going to put forth the effort to fulfill the new coaches needs.

On top of that, our general manager Hurney is a bonehead who has proven over and over during the last couple of years that he will sacrifice talent in order to save a buck (i.e. picking Armanti Edwards last year instead of Jacoby Ford, knowing that Edwards would be nothing more than a special team player who wouldnt get paid more than the nfl base salary throughout his career).

I really am fed up with the front office of the Panthers, and their laissez-faire attitude, while they expect the fans to keep pouring in money to see a completely awful product on the field.

I'd like to know what the sentiment is for the fans in Charlotte after Richardson's press conference. I've been listening to the callers on the local sports talk radio station (99.9 the fan) and I am part of the majority it seems

Richardson was probably THE cheapest owner in the NFL this season...but thats this season...do you remember how much he paid Jake after the Cardinals playoff blunder, which he still had to pay Jake this year while with the Browns? How about franchising Peppers, and before that offering to make him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history?

As far as the press conference, he definitely came across as kind of holier-than-thou but thats who he is. One thing to remember that might be overlooked is when he said he was the only owner to play in the NFL and he thinks that makes him want to win more. I think thats true. Its just fucked up that this season went so terribly, but in the end, we'll wind up with a franchise QB. A bunch of 7-9 and 8-8 and 9-7 seasons are great as far as consistency, but you'll never land a #1 pick, which sometimes you need.

the plus side is that we're having the number 1 draft pick, and the most cap space of all teams this upcoming season. Don't know if there's any free agent worth paying for though.

Yes, we had the most cap space this year too and refused to use it. Hopefully they'll reach an agreement soon enough that Richardson will at least spend some of it. I'm sure signing Luck will cost a pretty penny, that's part of why it wouldn't shock me to see Richardson try and trade out of the spot.

Probably the only thing worse than refusing to spend any money is foolishly spending ALOT of money.

Yeah, that's one thing I never really understood about the NFL. I almost wouldn't want a high draft pick because it's a very expensive gamble.

Not after next year

100% guaranteed that there's a rookie cap. Both sides want it, just a matter of negotiating how much and how long the contracts are.

Only important people who don't want one are the agents.

I've yet to see this mentioned but 3 out of the 4 mentioned candidates for the head coaching position (all but Fewell) run the 3-4 defense. Is there going to be a complete defensive overhaul in the Panthers near future?
