while not in a fraternity myself, I respect the idea that a bunch of friends can throw money at the beginning of the semester (in a way that can be rationalized to parents so they sponsor it) so that they can have parties and a common place to gather (frat house), which is otherwise unavailable to most freshmen and even sophomores. I don't see it as paying for friends but paying for the opportunity to meet more people and probably end up making friends.

I think the obvious problem with sororities and fraternities is that they are exclusive. So it's just kinda mean to tout the benefits of belonging when you know everybody else can't necessarily join.

I could give a shit whether someone is in a fraternity/sorority or not. It really doesn't affect my opinion of people at all. In fact, I think it's actually lame to judge people who join a social group.

You have deep-seeded issues if the association of people you don't know with a group you know nothing about bothers you that much.

people pay a lot of money for headhunters, professional coaching, training, certifications, networking workshops, etc....and remain unemployed

I paid for a place to live, friends, parties, food, parking and recycled exams/research papers....and got a great job out of it
