there's probably a better thread for this somewhere, since it's neither downtown nor revitalization, but a quick search didn't reveal it

Public meeting on parklets tomorrow:
http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/NCRALEIGH/bulletins/84b50b#

I thought the idea was really stupid until I saw it applied well in SF.

It's a fantastic idea that can really enhance urban space when done well.

Yeah I like the ones in SF.

And theyre good places for food trucks to park so all those all goombas can get their rocks off for that aspect.

I had to look up what a parklet was. looks like the dumbest fucking thing. i'm sure they'll find a way to drop a metric shit ton of money on some glorified benches and potted plants

^^^ They? It's privately funded. If a restaurant wants more outdoor seating they pay the city $12/day to rent a parking space and put their shit there.

^^ where do you see that it's privately funded? serious question.

or are you basing that on the assumption that they are privately funded in those other cities, so it must be so here as well.

It's definitely not privately funded everywhere and I don't know that it would be in Raleigh. They are usually pretty cheap to install, though (often cheaper than the cost of the parking space they replace).

Some good info on San Francisco's parklet program can be found here, including cost (theirs are privately funded): http://www.peoplepoweredmovement.org/site/images/uploads/ParkletDetailedFAQ.pdf

How is this cheaper to implement than a parking space. Its a fucking parking space. Plus these things are supposed to be removable for situations that call for it.

Boston funded its first parklets, though it wants to get private sponsorship for any future ones. New York City DOT publicly funds many street conversions that are similar to parklets, though I'm not sure that they would actually fall under that definition. A few smaller towns here in New Jersey have publicly funded parklets, though I think ultimately the goal is to get businesses and non-profits to sponsor them. I wouldn't be surprised if Raleigh gets things started with one or two sponsored by the city to get the ball rolling, but they might already have sponsors lined up (like they did with the bike corral in front of Raleigh Times).

As for the parking space comment, the average cost of a surface level parking space is anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 per space. A parklet is often as simple as a raised platform with some tables and chairs and maybe a planter or two on it.

These would be a better investment.

Local businesses would lobby against them, however. "Bathrooms are the only reason people come into our store!"

the only thing I'm not clear about is what districts this would be for? streetscape standards for the downtown district already allow room for sidewalk seating space.

http://dtraleigh.com/2013/07/summer-2013-restaurant-roundup/

Nice succinct update of whats going on in the downtown raleigh restaurant scene.

Quote :
"It could be just me but the summer seems like a great time to open a restaurant in downtown Raleigh. Need to work all the kinks to get ready for the cooler temperatures. It could just be the timing though.

Anyway, with us deep into the summer season, here is the latest bit of restaurant news.

We’re still waiting on something from Cafe de los Muertos, a coffee shop planned for a space along Hargett Street in The Hue building. Progress is happening though.
Joule Coffee, opening in the former space occupied by the Wilmoore Cafe on Wilmington Street, hasn’t opened yet but articles keep coming out saying that should happen soon.
Garland has been serving food from their take-out window along Martin Street. Sandwiched between King’s and Neptunes Parlour, Garland is still working on their indoor space but have set up tables and chairs on the sidewalk.
The lobby of the Sheraton Hotel on Fayetteville Street has been under heavy renovation the last few months. In it, Jimmy V’s Osteria & Bar will be opening soon.
Cognito Bar and Grill has opened where the former Joel Lane’s Public House was in Glenwood South.
Pop Up Ice Cream Parlour has opened a second location. The original location on Wilmington Street will still be open for the summer while the second one, at 616 North Person Street, is opening.
Stanbury, a restaurant being set up where Market’s original location was on Blount Street, looks almost finished and ready to open any day now.
Ashley Christensen is working on a new restaurant called Death and Taxes for the bottom floor of the recently renovated Raleigh Industrial Bank building.
The Ohio based pizza chain, Donato’s, has brought a location to Seaboard Station.
Crank Arm Brewing will be opening up their taproom in the next few weeks.
The food space in the Marbles Kids Museum is now Pogo creating a kid-friendly (and adult) menu ran by a company that buys food from nearby family-owned farms and ranches.
There are signs for a restaurant called Oak City Meatball Shoppe in the retail spaces along Davie Street in the Red Hat Building.

And finally, I don’t know anything about it but the last retail space in the PNC Plaza has some paper covering up the windows. There aren’t any signs but instead symbols of food. Take it with a grain of salt as to what could, or won’t, be coming in that space."

I need to ride by there, but for anyone who knows the warehouse district area....is crank arm in the old White Collar crime space? or was there another space adjacent to that building that they improved?

It can be implemented either way, depends on the "market"

Parklets and other little individualistic streetscape projects are essential to place-making, which is incredibly important for a city like Raleigh whose downtown is still coming into its own

I had not been downtown in Raleigh in a while (I've driven through, but not walked around) and so my wife and I went there this weekend and walked Fayetteville Street and went to one of the kids museums (we have two little girls). I was impressed. Fayetteville St is nice and the whole vibe downtown was great. So much nicer than when I was at State.

We ate at Cafe Luna as we held our wedding rehearsal dinner there. Still a great place to eat IMO.

Perhaps a stupid question, but what does that mean? Why are cooler temps more difficult for a restaurant?

I'm anxiously awaiting the opening of this. Does anyone know if they have a website up yet?

Some good DTR restaurant updates:

Quote :
"
-According to New Raleigh, the Rockford on Glenwood South in downtown Raleigh, which closed on July 1 for renovations, will reopen on Monday, August 5th. Check their website out here.

-Got word this week from Chad McIntyre that The Market (a combination grocery store, market, restaurant and catering company) continues to move toward the opening its new location over on Franklin Street in downtown Raleigh, but will be doing so without the partnership with Green Planet Catering. We'll continue to watch this and let you know as Chad gets closer to opening. Check them out here.

-Speaking of the old Market location on Blount Street, New Raleigh is reporting that Stanbury will open any day now. Stanbury will specialize in modern American cuisine with a menu that will change daily and be dictated by local and seasonal ingredients. Keep up with their opening announcement on Facebook here.

-Back at the beginning of July we told you about Crafty Beer Shop moving into the old Hayes Barton Furniture Company location in Five Points over in Raleigh (Fairview Road). Thanks to good friend Gordon Brown, we have learned that they are now open. The shop specializes in North Carolina craft beers as well as beers from around the world. Cheers to Gordon!

-The Triangle Business Journal reported this week that Clyde Cooper's Barbecue has found a new home - just around the corner at 313 S. Wilmington Street in downtown Raleigh. The move will take place sometime in November and will only result in the restaurant being closed for 3 days. The new digs will very closely resemble the current restaurant. We'll keep you posted on it as we get closer.

-One of the largest food truck events in the area is hosting its third (in a series of four) event on August 11th. The Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo will change things up a little bit for this one. Unlike the previous two (which were held from 12-5), this one will be held from 4 until 9 p.m. Love it! Check out all the details here.
