If you are a liberal it is okay to hate on Christians and Southerners, but those same people better not hate on anyone else or then they are bigoted, close minded, inbred, idiots.

It's okay to hate on stupid, no matter who exhibits it. Disagreeing with religious belief because it is non-rational is in fact superior to disagreeing with facts because you really really believe in God.

Lots of closed minds ITT.

Like man made global warming? If that isn't a religion requiring leaps of faith and who's followers who don't tolorate opposing viewpoints, I don't know what is.

Quote :
"Let's not forget that by appearing in the Focus on the Family ad, he was supporting bigoted views against the LGBT community, among other things."

So if he changed his name to Muhammad Tebow that'd be ok. B/c Muslims actually kill gays, outlaw any abortion, don't tolorate any other viewpoints, are polygimists, all in the name of their religion.

Why is this always a response by someone? It's a misrepresentation of the argument. Nobody said its okay to "hate" on christains becauseof their religion. We're talking about not liking a public sports figure becuase he chooses to to very publically promote his specific brand of religion. I think most of the people who don't like him becuase of his bible-thumpin' also wouldn't like him if he was using his status to very publically promote islam, scientology, or wiccan either.

^dude, you're the close-minded one if you think that Tim Tebow shouldn't be disliked becuase of his words and actions.

How did you arrive at that conclusion. That wasn't the point and it wouldn't be okay. Holding back progress in the sake of a belief structure that isn't rooted in fact isn't okay.

Quote :
"^Why do you dislike people that think different than you do?"

I don't think he dislikes all people with a different viewpoint...It's dislike the viewpoint that holds humanity back. It is the viewpoint that wants to teach creationism in biology classes, defund embryonic stemcell research, outlaw gay marriage, take away a woman's right to choose. Make a group of people second class citizens or denying the chance to research to cure cancer is not okay, but it is being justified because a bronze age text says it is, that's the viewpoint that is currently being discussed. Not all viewpoints. You can't make the leap that if he doesn't like x then he doesn't like yz or anything else either.

Saying you don't like the belief structure doesn't make someone close minded any more than someone in the 60's saying, you know people saying schools should stay segregated are wrong and I don't like the viewpoint that schools should say separate.

you seem to consistently miss points. i said multiple times it's fine if he has his beliefs that differ from mine. plenty of people do. it's the fact that tebow uses his status to very publically promote his brand of religion by wearing bible verses on his face, appearing in intolerant commercials, doing some silly prayer show-boating after touchdowns, using interviews to constantly preach his beliefs. Why is he one of the only athletes that does that to the capacity that he does? Plenty of athletes are religious, but very few act like Tebow does. THAT's what I don't like, not the fact that he thinks differently than i do. Get it?

Quote :

Well there you go. He was openly religious, yet he wasn't persecuted (as some of you seem to think Tebow is). Maybe it's becuase Tebow is a douche about it?

nobody said he was a "figure-head". I believe what is being discussed is how he uses his status as a football player to promote his brand of religion in a somehwhat over-the-top manner, and how he is one of the few athletes to do that, and why some people don't like him because of that.

I find the opposite to be true of him. While, yes, he wears his beliefs on his sleeve, he isn't pushy about it and doesn't expect everyone to do what he does. Any attention his goodwill efforts cause is brought on by any media that may be following up on him. Not by himself.

What does it matter anyway? He isn't pushing religion. He is pushing charity. Something the world needs more of from all religions. And he is one of the most genuine people doing it. Let a playa play.

^^Players change their name all the time to muhammad and no one hates the guy for promoting his religion. Ali is a national treasure for Allah's sake. And yet everytime you say his name you are promoting the prophet Mohammad. Yet the treatment of anyone non-Muslim (gays, christians, Jews, whatever) in Muslim countries is appaling. Where is the outrage and hatred for Muslim athletes?

Lots of hypocrites ITT.

Dude, your close-mindedness and inability to understand the argument is making it hard to even follow your "argument".

What does the treatment of gays in muslim countries have to do with Tebow being a douche? Why should people hate muslim athletes becuase of what muslim countries do, and what does that have to do with Tebow being a douche? I think it's very apparent in all my posts above, but i'll say it since you don't seem to be following: If it was a muslim athlete using his status to promote his brand of religion the same way tebow does/did, then i'd think he was douche as well. Same with a scientologist athlete. Same with am atheist athlete. It's not so much about the religion, it's about painting bible verses on your faces, it's about making commercials, it's about praying after every touchdown, it's about talking about it in every interview (haven't i made this clear yet?)

Re-read the thread. The arguement started with Tebow kneels after TDs. Then when it was pointed out that lots of athletes do it the argument moved on to his abortion commercial and gay marriage. Not sure when Tebow discussed gay marriage. I must have missed that TD celebration.

The point is, lots of athletes display religious symbols. Muslims converts change their name. What would be more in your face that making you say their prophet's name when you mention them? But there is no hatred for muslim athletes.

I just don't understand your hate. I guess I never will.

No, the point is Tebow goes above and beyond almost all other athletes. And I don't hate the guy, I don't even know him. I just think he's a douche for going over the top with his religous displays. Can you name one athlete in the modern day that goes out of his way more than Tebow to show that he is religous? (and i don't even think your Ali comparison is a good one)

are you dense? changing your name is not the same as painting your face, making commercials, talking about it any interview, etc. etc. If there was a muslim athlete who did this, i would think he was a douche as well. But i don't know of one. Do you?

Religion is a choice. There's no built-in reason to be automatically tolerant of it. Christianity, being generally non-rational and counter to women's and homosexuals' rights does not deserve tolerance. Any decent person should be offended by it.

You're clueless about Cassius Clay if all you think he did was change his name.

Dude showed up on national television with Louis fucking Farrakhan. Just because it was 45 years ago and you're not aware of it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

And for the record, his mamma call him Clay, imma call him Clay.

That's true. Like you mentioned, it was 45 years ago. And i always thought his show-boating was pretty deuchey (see? that' me saying that a muslim athlete is a deuche). Now, can you name anybody in modern sports who fluants their religion as much and as in many ways as Tebow?

Calling science a belief system comparable to religion is disingenuous, wrong, and stupid. I'd love to stop responding in Sports Talk but I can't let you get away with this. Science follows evidence. Religion follows nothing but wishful thinking. Belief in science is justifiable while belief in religion is not.

Science is not a religion. I'm sorry your religion is stupid and doesn't make sense. You're not going to make it any better by trying to make science look bad.

so i understand that debating religion doesn't belong here. but is discussing how tebow uses his status as a professional football player to promote his brand of religion, and how he's the only professional athlete that i'm aware of it to do it in such a capacity, is that discussion allowed in ST? I'm seriously curious, I don't want to get suspended, but it does seem sports related to me.

ok, then, let's move back on topic. HOW is Tebow using his status as an athlete to unnecessarily promote Christianity in a way different than other athletes who promote things using their status? Because he writes crap on his eyeblack while no one else has any other tattoos or the like? Because he was in 1 commercial while LT was in a bajillion soup commercials? Because people ask him about it and he responds to the question? Because he prays after a touchdown while others... pray after touchdowns? There's literally no leg to stand on here! It all, ultimately, comes down to "I don't like Tebow because he's a Christian."
