He’s going to be a both-sides media star. I can already see Chuck Todd having him on every weekend.

Also, I thought twice-losing POTUS candidates were supposed to shut the fuck up and knit.

^^ because he’s going to vote with Trump 98% of the time no matter how many stern looks he gives

and no republican is going to run in 2020, because republicans love Trump. he is the GOP.

Still waiting on Romney to stand up to Trump. At least more than criticizing the budget deficit. No other republican has the gravitas.

He could have won the 2012 election. But it's just about timing. He was rising at an inappropriate time.

^^Maybe he assumes what most people assume, now that there's a job opening Trump will find someone that's somehow even worse as a replacement?

For abuse of power, yes.

He voted against abuse of Congress, which kinda cancels it out imo. Fine example of handwringing.

^^what gain? I think he did it to give cover to Manchin and Jones to vote guilty. Supposedly even ppl from Utah are souring towards him, Trumps approval is higher than his. I had heard before that Utahans didn’t like Trump as much because mormons don’t like brash ppl like that but I guess not. Perhaps in 4 years that will be moot and opinions will change.

^It's very dated now but there was a poll that showed Trump was more popular among Mormons than all other faiths represented in the poll:

^^^^ what the fuck?

I can't beat Romney's own response to such a silly allegation:

Yes! That’s it! They caught me!” he proclaimed. “Look at the base I have! It’s going to be at least 2 or 3 percent of the Republican Party. As goes Utah, so goes the nation!

I Googled and couldn't find it. I can't think of any conceivable reason that Trump DIDN'T obstruct congress, so forgive me.

He voted against the obstruction charge because Trump did not break any laws while refusing to cooperate. This rolls back to previous points I made regarding how the House should have proceeded with the full investigation, up to and including forcing the Supreme Court to finally decide this nonsensical executive privilege garbage once and for all.

In other words - Trump broke no laws avoiding Congress due to a legitimate legal belief/precedent regarding executive privilege. Because of this, Romney did not consider it obstruction.

But I mean yes, absent the whole charade of having to go through the courts, Trump obstructed Congress' investigation, a role afforded them by the Constitution.

" He didn't break any laws" is not a good argument against impeachment.

Huh? You said he had a good argument, I'm disputing that. The issue is pretty clear I thought.

^^^^^ Right. I don't agree--I'm with you--but it's not totally specious reasoning, I suppose.

...but in that light, you have a Republican Senator, from a bright red state, who is a former standard bearer for the party, who explicitly stated that he wanted to find any possible justification for not voting for either charge of impeachment, who conjured such a justification on one of the charges by the narrowest, most convenient logic that still falls within the bounds of straight-faced reason, who STILL felt compelled to vote for the other impeachment charge, against all historical precedent, self-interest, and arguably the interest of his constituents.
