Which T-dubers are hunters? I've recently decided I wanted to get back into it. I used to do it alot through grade school, but haven't in years until this season. Thought this might be a good place for questions if there are experienced hunts on here.
I got my first buck about a week ago, no monster, but I got the first-buck gitters out of me. Looking to get into duck hunting as well, but since I know nothing, gotta find someone to teach me. I hear them every Monday,Wed, and Sat morning on the game lands behind my house. Anyone have experience with game lands?
Where do you hunt? Outside of Goldsboro (nahunta area). Maybe eventually on the game lands behind my apt complex (Jordan Lake lands) What do you hunt? Deer, hopefully duck What do you hunt with? normally my 12g Got anything? One 5-pointer 11/19/2012 11:44:26 AM |

Why can't there be a hunting in general thread. Did a new patch or hotfix come out for deer? Did they redesign the map?

i killed a lot of squirrels last year in Person County. killed two deer up there the year before that. one with the bow and one with the rifle. shot varmints like crows and groundhogs. had to move and now my only option is the Sandhills game lands. went squirrel hunting out there a couple times, but i couldn't really find anywhere that looked like it held many squirrels.

Keep an eye on Cabelas. They have the best ones for a decent price. There wont be many sales since season is in, but i picked up a $200 pair for $99 back in September. I have also found them at thrift stores and yard sales, just make sure and inspect them and make sure they were taken care of. You guys are more than welcome to borrow my stocking foot neoprene waders, i have 2 pairs of those. You can also just get some hip boots from dicks for ~$40. They will get you by for a season or two until you can get a nice set of boot foot waders. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I am by no means an expert, but i have learned a lot the past few years. I get out and Duck Hunt at least 30 days a year. 11/19/2012 3:43:42 PM |

here is my 5 pointer I shot a few weeks ago in Wayne County.
I had one walk up on me with a nice size rack, atleast a 8 pointer. But as I was getting ready to shoot, a combine drove by (I hunt near a road) and spooked him. About 45 min later he comes around my right side through a thick gathering of trees. He gets about 30 yards away from me, but of course there was a few trees in the way. I figured I could lean back and shoot around the tree, but i'd only have a split second to take the shot before he saw me. I did so, and just as I pulled the trigger I realized it wasnt the same deer.
still good eatin'
btw, shot him about 2:45pm

I have gotten into taking my camera with me this year which has produced some neat photos. So far I only have one kill this year, but have passed on quite a few small bucks and does. Got a freezer full of deer burger to show for it though.

How many of you ACTUALLY field dress/butcher your own deer? I'm finding that more and more people dont do that themselves.
I think it should be required of all hunters to do that at least once. It really puts things in perspective. 11/22/2012 11:07:49 AM |

I do. Hang it up in my back yard and go to town. Shoulders and neck meat go in the grinder. Tenderloins and backstraps go on the grill.
If anyone wants to share recipes/techniques, sounds good to me. I did 2 batches of burger last time. 80:20 deer:bacon and 80:20 deer:beef fat.
Both turned out good but the bacon meat is kind of salty. 11/22/2012 11:31:06 AM |

Since I don't have a truck, I have to completely quarter the deer there in the woods unfortunately.
I do what you do for the most part, but I save the two rear quarters for roasts. Front quarters get ground.
Speaking of, Anyone recommend a good cheap grinder? I usually borrow an electric one And it sucks.

I do it all myself too (well with dad's help). Bring it back to his house, hang it up and whoever shot it skins it. Our neighbor across the street has a walk-in fridge that we hang it in and let it cure for a couple of days. Then we process the meat, basically ground 80:20 deer:beef fat, and save the tenderloin and back strap for eatin. Most of the meat I keep back at my dad's since I dont have the freezer space. Im looking into getting a 3.5 cu ft chest freezer, big enough to pack full of meat, but small enough to move from apt to apt until I get settled down.
I did run across a recipe online for the tenderloin and in itching to try it. 11/22/2012 5:55:00 PM |

I have heard great things about this grinder from people that use it to grind chicken necks to make dog food. Meat shouldn't be a problem.

I skin and quarter them in the field, age them in coolers at the house and then butcher them in the kitchen. Set aside some roasts and steaks, grind the rest and make all different kinds of sausage, pepperoni, snack sticks, jerky and hamburger. I think I enjoy processing the deer more than shooting it. I have 16 gallon bags full of meat in the freezer right now processed all different kinds of ways.

havent done any hunting in the past few weeks. Last time I tried to go out duck hunting the water level was too low.
However this morning I awoke to the most gunshots that ive heard since i've been living over here by the game lands. I guess the water level must have risen, and this cold front brought some ducks down, cause everyone was shooting at something. 12/15/2012 9:20:03 AM |

I took a medium sized doe yesterday morning around 7:30am. I placed a "perfect" shot, but it still somehow ran about 1/4 mile straight down a hill into some lowlands. I couldnt drag it back up the hill, so I had to skin/quarter it down in the lowlands and carried it back to my car in trashbags, lol.
Also, it was cold as fuck yesterday morning at 5am in the woods, but I DID get to see 16 shooting stars from the meteor shower! That was badass. 12/15/2012 2:10:43 PM |

random question... if your shot doesn't kill the deer quickly enough, can it have an impact on the meat? (stress releases adrenaline, etc...) 12/15/2012 3:18:40 PM |

selling parts of a deer is illegal
if a deer runs a lot and lactic acid builds up in the muscles, yes the meat can taste different. this is common on deer that were run by dogs. i shot a deer once and she fell right where she was standing, but she writhed on the ground for a few minutes. meat tasted fine. 12/15/2012 3:22:51 PM |
