in general though, if a group of rednecks beat me up and told me to stop talking to kids, i would probably stop.

it's illegal af to lethally booby trap your property (aside from the fact he had actual landmines), and also illegal to defend the curtilage like he was doing. all of this with the premise of messing with people's kids and also him not calling the cops or anything. it would go down as first-degree murder for sure.

I just finished episode 3 and I'm about to give up. This shit is too fucking slow. Good story, but it drags and drags.

Is it worth sticking with it?

I'm mainlining GOT right now... through S6 for the third time.

Going from that to slow ass dialog is like watching paint dry.

I feel like the acting this season has been absolutely superb but the story just doesn’t quite have that it factor to it that captured me like season one. I know that’s a pretty tough comparison but I don’t really see myself watching this season again when I’ve binged season one an embarrassing number of times.

^I think part of that is because the plot is very similar to season 1. If this had switched places with season 1, then I feel like we'd all like this one just as much.

Sidenote, I was pleased to see them reference season 1 in general in the last episode. They can rightfully forget that season 2 exists though.

Not moving fast enough, they're going to have to slam pack the last episode full of stuff. 1.5 hour show but still...

^^ One thing that really set S1 apart to me was the creepy factor that was involved from the very start. I thought we were going to get some of that this time when the dolls and the boy were found but that never really materialized past that point. S1 has it all over the place with the Dora Lane death to the wooden things found to the mural on the abandoned church to the whole Reggie Ledoux aspect and so on all the way to the video Rust found and what turned out to be Carcosa.

Almost felt intentional by the writer. The "Making a Murderer" chick doing the interviews represented the reddit fan base with all their theories, (imo) I dunno. It wasn't groundbreaking tv or anything, but I enjoyed Dorff and Ali.

What weird old guy was it you were talking about?

Two questions though:

1) One eyed guy said that Lucy Purcell was paid off by the Hoyt's to keep quiet. She knew the kids were regularly going to play with Isabelle. When she got home from work that night though, all she knew was that the kids were missing. Why didn't she tell that to Hays and West when they first questioned her about their arrangement? Nothing was illegal about that. Yes, that one cop paid her off to stay quiet about Will dying and Julie being kidnapped, but there is no way he got to her before she first talked to Hays and West. That would mean that from the time that Will died, that cop would have to find her at work, tell her that her son is dead and that she'd never see her daughter again, get her to accept the money, then have her compose herself enough to where two trained detectives wouldn't be able to tell something was up. Timing just doesn't make sense.

2) What was the uncle's role in all of this? He was ready to talk to the detectives in 1990 but then disappeared and his remains was found at the bottom of a drained quarry in 2015. How did he know everything to begin with?

Yeah, ending was kind of meh. The whole season they build it up to be one of the characters we already know behind it all, but it just turns out to be someone that hasn't been introduced until the last episode. I guess one eyed guy was in on it yes, but he was just a helper in all of it.

I enjoyed watching, but it certainly was annoying that they basically got the whole story from the guy who they'd been looking for from the beginning who seems like he wanted to be found starting around the middle timeline.

After the uncle showed up and told the cops he had info, the dad finds him and beats up/held him at gunpoint and I think he just gave him the name Hoyt, so the dad broke into the Hoyt house and found the room

Yeah that annoyed me too. The guy said he was watching Hays regularly from his house all the time because he was trying to gather the courage to tell him everything. He eventually would have. So that just means that in 2015, Hays and West would have had to do absolutely nothing and they would have found the truth. Or at least the truth up until the faked death of Julie.

good season, mostly a return to form after a truly disappointing season 2

i don't understand the reason for revealing the actual events in the way they did though. they chased these answers for 7+ hours of television, across at least 3 different timelines (felt like there was a 4th in ep 8), and then they just spill it all in like 15 minutes with the one eyed dude. seems like it could have been more enjoyable to spread that stuff out, more police work etc.

and i guess we're just supposed to take that guys word for everything? assuming he's telling the truth? i guess the facts as we know them support it.

Hays wife is the ONLY thing tying us to Lucy being her daughter, and that her and the landscape guy ever even made it out.

Just so many possible ways to interpret the ending. Not Final enough. Season 1...Wrapped up. Breaking Bad has good closure. I think we have come to expect too much from TD since season 1 was the masterpiece it was.

Leaning hard on the supernatural! Not sure how it will compare but the 1st season had the right balance.

I was happy to see "The Thing" prominently display on the DVD shelf at the research station as an obvious easter egg. Anytime I read/see anything about research stations in the middle of nowhere in a cold climate, that movie is what I think of.

So I'm trying to figure out the relationships of the different people introduced. The young police officer is the son of the older dude police officer -- looks like the older dude maybe was the chief before Jodie Foster came in? So he did something that got him removed from position but not outright fired? Why would he be unwilling to give up the files on that older case from the woman whose tongue was cut out, especially if the current chief ordered it?

That girl living with Jodie Foster appears to be some kind of adopted daughter? They talked about her real mother at some point? And the young police officer kid used to babysit her.

^yeah, sounds about right.

A couple things I noticed: when the former police officer that’s now highway patrol or whatever went to see the old murdered girls brother, they focused for a super long time on some blond haired white guy walking out of the mine. He’s definitely going to come into play later. They also focused a lot on eating, and the brother mentioned water went bad. Seems like the mine is poisoning the water (which in turn poisoning the animals and then the people eating the animals). Hopefully there’s more to it than that, cause that all seemed not very well hidden

That could explain why the herd of elk jumped off the cliff. Before whatever happened at the research station went down though, it looked like one guy was "infected" first when the Spanish guy was making the sandwich. I think he said "she is awake", which doesn't imply to me some kind of mass hysteria. What's up with the lady seeing the "ghost" though? It led her right to the bodies, so not just a hallucination unless it is just a really crazy coincidence.

I've never heard of a DVD getting stuck on repeat either. I'm not sure how that could even happen.

My first thought was they were leaning way more towards the supernatural as well. See where it goes.

I'm betting the dad (Kenny Powers' brother) played a part in the murder or at least covering it up.

Also, the cheek piercings make me uncomfortable.

I skipped the 2nd season because I heard it wasn't as good as the first. But when this episode ended I was jones for more so I started season 2.

The old woman that found the bodies mentioned that the ghost that led her to them was named Travis Cohle. Shares a last name with Rust Cohle from S1. No way that is a coincidence.

It’s not a coincidence, it’s his dad. In season 1 he said he used to live with his survivalist dad in Alaska, and that he was dying of leukemia.

I’m really enjoying this season so far. But who the fuck is gonna pay $700 for a simple spiral line tattoo??

Saw this earlier today when looking up any other references to other seasons that I might have missed:

Quote :
"Petey tells Danvers that the station is funded through an NGO, which in turn is funded through a series of shell companies connected to an organization known as Tuttle United. Fans of True Detective should recognize that name immediately: It’s a reference to Billy Lee Tuttle, the Louisiana reverend and entrepreneur whose family was revealed to be the ringleaders of the aforementioned sex cult that Hart and Cohle were investigating in season 1."
