I've never been to a Penn Station. Are they in Raleigh? Specifically the Glennwood/Lynn Rd area? I feel I must try them to provide accurate comparison data.

None in the area, but Capriotti's beats them all.

I'd like to base my vacations around Capriotti's.

I think the hipster thing to do is to avoid chain restaurants (which includes JJs).

Penn Station is the closest sandwich place to where I live. Well, maybe it's a tie in distance between Penn Station and Subway, and Subway blows. There is also a Quizno's almost as close, but its uptown so fuck dealing with parking uptown just for a sandwich.

No matter how many banana peppers you add, cardboard still tastes like cardboard.

Ok now I know you're fucking with us. It's one thing to talk about the volume of "food" you receive there for the money, it's another thing to call their product "glorious"

Both today and yesterday, I got $4 worth of tips and payment in change... and I don't mean just quarters, mostly nickels and dimes, but a few quarters and pennies.
...some of which I very nearly threw at my boss. He deserved it.

Other than a good haul in tips (two large/catering orders that each tipped $10 and $15 ), I got four pens and a freshly made cookie (as well as a monetary tip). Having a sense of humor makes people like you.

Also, theory: females tip more to other females. I say this merely because I have gotten larger tips from females (and disabled people).

ComputerGuy, you are a saint and/or god among men

I usually get/have come to expect ~2 on anything between 5 and 15. Someone tipped about that the other day, where do you work?

I can answer pretty much any question anyone had about JJ's, especially if it's specifically about the triangle area stores. I'm a former assistant manager and I worked there for 4.5 years. There's a pretty decent chance I know people you work with yuffie. I definitely know the people you work for.

Also, Subway is utter dogshit.

^Actually, because management is kinda crappy. I haven't had any bad experiences yet, but apparently all of the likable managers either turn into assholes or leave. The traditional Jimmy Johns 2 week notice is supposedly throwing your apron on the floor and walking out.

Got more hours today though woo.

But working the dinner shift now. To those who work the 3pm to midnight shift, do you order the same things you might for lunch for dinner instead? I have no idea what to expect.

^^ Definitely a trend. Assistant managers are expected to work 50 hours a week and GMs are expected to work 60+. All the while getting treated like shit by upper management and inadequately compensated. As far as I can tell it's mostly just this franchise because they're trying to squeeze as much profit out of all the stores as possible.

It hasn't always been this bad because a couple years ago it was a lot harder for most people to find a job. There was a point in time where the store I worked at had about 10 college graduates all working hourly. Now that the economy has improved somewhat people are less willing to put up with all the bullshit. Over that same amount of time ownership has reduced compensation and increased expectations. So it's no surprise that 95% of people who might actually enjoy working there get fed up with it and leave.

Part of the reason is that there's not really any point in ever moving up to a manager from being a driver. Working 50 hours at 2 different jobs would make you more money than working 50 hours without overtime at JJ's because they've made it extremely difficult to obtain 100% of bonuses.

Kiwi, you are wonderful. I usually expect ~2 on orders up to $10, maybe $15, $3 above that.

I was also told that apparently you have to declare vacation days a year in advance or some bullshit. A buddy of mine who recently got demoted from being a manager for other reasons didn't get to take vacation days for 2-3 years because of it.
I suppose it's a trend, but you'd think that the Area Manager and his higher ups would realize that everyone's miserable...
Also, ran into a situation the other day where the GM or Area Manager would just put people on the schedule without confronting or asking them first... I was asked repeatedly about when I could work and got more hours, but apparently that's rare.

Either way, I like it well enough so far, aside from the Assistant Manager that I really liked up and leaving.

Our store gets audited on Sunday though when I work, I have no idea what to expect. I was told it shouldn't affect me much though, so that's cool, if it's true.

I don't know about the vacation thing. When I worked there it was a month's notice which I felt was reasonable. I also had the best AM at the time though who now runs all operations. I don't know how they split the stores up anymore but if I had to guess I'd say you're at one of Steve's stores. Basically in Cary or Durham, I think.

I think the AM's care but the bureaucracy is structured to where they have to care more about store numbers than actual people. So basically like any other fast food place in America right now. It's mostly because the owner is a big financial guy and sets absolutely ridiculous targets that are impossible to hit. Instead of just trying to make things run the way they're supposed to he wants to be the best at everything. The problem is, corporate already has guidelines on how to run a Jimmy John's. It's pretty fucking simple. But the RDU franchise has the lowest labor targets in the country and pretty strict targets for everything else too. So it basically just makes all the workers bust their ass for less money. I actually think working at a store somewhere might be fun. I used to have fun working for this franchise but it got progressively worse over time.

As far as the audit goes, just make sure you're in uniform basically. Wear the right color shoes, right color socks, right pants. No tattoos showing, no more than one earring in each ear, no other piercings showing. And make sure your shirt is always tucked in and you've got a car-top on. That's all you need to worry about.

Yep. How do you know of Steve? I have heard so many Steve stories before I even started working there, each laced with more crap than the next (this is from the hourly workers as well as the managers)
I've had zero interaction with him though, so I really can't say.
I know that the GM of our store is trying to cut costs everywhere, but we've run into problems with not having enough of things before, so all hell breaks loose and deliveries are late /:

I tried to explain all of the policies on dress code to friends and parents at one point, they said it sounds like the army. It's pretty easy to follow though, even if wearing a tshirt tucked into jeans looks good on very very few people, and I am not one of them.

But any idea on the dinner shift? We serve mostly businesses, so I'm curious how busy it will be/if the tips are still good (lunch tips are phenomenal, but mostly because it's catering and really busy)

Well, like I said, I worked there for over 4 years and I was a manager at one point. So I got to know the business pretty well inside and out. The longer you work there, the more you'll learn about the culture, and the more you will hate it. Like I said, 99% of the problems stem from the fact that they are trying to operate based off of unrealistic expectations. All it does is stress everyone out and make it a horrible place to work.

Dinner shifts will most likely rely on how much residential area there is within the delivery area. Tips will generally be based on how affluent people are. But some rich people are shitty tippers and the best tippers are probably servers/bartenders/service people, etc. Bad weather = more deliveries. I'm still not positive what store you work at so I can't really say.

And yes, I loathe t-shirt tucked into jeans.

Jimmy's is good because of the bread. It makes that sandwich.

Penn station is good. I get the standard philly w/ marinara on the side. damn good. The fries are good too. My favorite philly cheesesteak is from Anvil's though.

Who is actually likely to get Jimmy Johns on Christmas Eve?
Our store is staying open until 9 (we close at 9, unlike most stores), not 5. And I work lunch through close tomorrow. Not looking forward to that...

synapse, where do you work? I've been talking to a handful of the security people I've made friends with and a lot of them say they don't expect anyone to be there except for the small handful of people who work 24/7/365 customer service/repair/troubleshooting/there's a word that I'm missing.

PSA: If you are going to have your assistant/secretary/front desk person sign for your sandwich, PLEASE also give them a tip to give to the deliverer, or tell them how much to add. I realize this probably doesn't occur to people until they see the line for gratuity, but it can put a huge damper on someone's day/paycheck.

A few things:

-If you say you're gonna have someone else sign for it and you are told to tell them what total to sign for, fucking do it.
-Don't try to make small talk if you're not gonna leave a tip. Flirting and compliments are not acceptable exchanges for tips.
-"So where do you work" and "what Jimmy Johns do you work at" are not acceptable forms of small talk. I worked at Jimmy Johns, and the about a mile away from you.
-If you live in an apartment complex on the third or higher floor, add an extra dollar for each flight of stairs the person has to climb. Especially if you ordered drinks.
-Flirting is sometimes acceptable, especially if the driver flirts with you. Texting the driver asking her for her name if you are more than 20 years older than her and you are unattractive and creepy and she tries to leave asap when talking to you is not acceptable (seriously please go the fuck away please stop texting me you are 60 and work a minimum wage position and don't even tip well)
-Being angry at the driver about store policies is not acceptable. This includes the fact that drivers do not carry coin change and it will not be given to them by their managers. If your driver has coin change, good for you, but if you're pissy about not being given exact change because your order was 18.75 and you paid with a 20 and only got a dollar back, that quarter belongs up your ass.
-For the love of all things good please give the correct phone number and do not leave your phone until you have your sandwich. Ordering and having a conversation away from your desk or putting your phone on silent or going into a lab with no reception is not acceptable.

Main reasons I wish I had google glass include: the ability to subtly take pictures of peoples "augh how do I math" or "writing on this paper bag is difficult" faces without them noticing and creating a montage. Some of the faces are hilarious.

In other news, today was my last day. Tears were shed.
