While this past episode was extremely slow...I still enjoyed it. Being picky, but I wouldn't mind the pace picking up a bit. Seems like they should almost be done with getting everyone's "back-stories" and can hopefully get into tying up some of these story lines. Next week has the chick who lost her whole family...and it looks a little more action packed.

So how long until Garvey ends up sleeping with his daughter's friend? She's obviously crushing on him hard and he tends to get drunk a lot so I feel like it is only a matter of time.

I thought it was a good episode. The part where he calls ATFEC and the guy is like "yeah we can wipe them out for you" and he says no and then there's "well, good luck with that then" was pretty funny.

Any ideas on who's doing the stoning?

The daughter's friend was smokin hot, I hope we get to see more of her...naked.

It was weird how the agents voice changed on the phone towards the end of the call. Almost sounded like he was that dog killing guy.

What do we think actually happened to Garvey's shirts?

^I was thinking the GR took them when they came into the houses. Looks like they are always in good need of white shirts.

Although did he always have that security system? If so, Lori prob knew the code but it would have gone off when that deer wrecked his kitchen. On the topic, what's up with the deer wrecking his kitchen?

^ not sure about the deer stuff...they haven't revisited in a couple episodes, but it seems to be some imagery associated with the chief as he's always running into them. i don't read the episode reviews but perhaps someone who does can share any thoughts gleaned from there.

Glad that they related Wayne back to Mapleton and showed why he is so "important". Even though the stepson is his follower I'm not really too interested in the storyline of him with the Asian girl.

i'm not saying he is doing it out of the kindness of his heart, all i'm saying is that we have seen 2 people that have appeared much happier after letting him "take their pain"

Surely you realize we're not talking about real life here...we're talking about a fictional TV show.

Your hatred of religion might be skewing your opinion of the plot developments in said TV show dude.

This episode definitely seems to make Wayne more "legit" than previously thought. I get the "people talk in tongues and handle snakes" comparison, but I think that would have been a better comparison if he was "healing" people just like the senator....people who sought him out, knew his reputation, and were looking to be "cured". Nora is different. She's been cynical about all of this stuff and, like Wayne said, she kind of wants to "keep the pain."

Now him talking to her about all of that stuff leads her to "wanting to be free"...but she didn't come to him knowing that's what he was going to do. She was just trying to find out more about the author.

I'm not saying he's not a fraud...but he definitely looks a little more "real" now. And yes...it is a TV show...so he could possibly be an alien for all we know.

I'm still hoping that he's not truly giving out magical hugs, but that it's more of a psychological thing, in that the act of paying the money and submitting to a hug, agreeing that you WANT to let go of the pain is, in itself, enough of a symbolic act that it lets people get on with their lives.

She paid money for something else.

The way he "read" her, knew everything that was going on with her etc, I think they're showing Wayne as being legit, and his hugs might truly be magical.

hatred of religion?

I just theorized that he may not be legit given what we know so far. slow your roll.

the show has talked openly about cults and cult leaders who are megalomaniacs. it's not out of the realm of possibility that he's the biggest one in the show.

I was speaking in more general terms...most people are paying for hugs, not to find out what happened to the author

I'm not sure if what you're saying is a disagreement or not with me, and even if you are, I'm only hoping they're not magic hugs...I'm not arguing that they are or aren't

But to be clear, when you say he read her, knew what to say, etc...that would almost be more indicative of the hug being just a symbol and not something magical. Sort of a red pill or blue pill situation. In other words, could anyone learn this process of reading people and being able to say what they need to hear in order to let go of their pain, or is Wayne truly have some sort of unique magical ability that no one else could possess simply through understanding and repetition?

Neither? I guess I'm hoping the magic hugs are real since it makes the show more interesting.

I was pondering this possibility during that scene. At first I was impressed that he seemed to be "reading" her, but then I was thinking that he's been doing this a while...probably has a few different storylines built.

I really liked this line/scene:
Quote :
""What's next? What's fucking next? Nothing is next! Nothing!,"

It had me thinking she might join the GR or something

I agree with that...I said as such earlier in this thread, but I'll rehash it. The show is more interesting to me as a story about how people react to an unknown event like this, less interesting if more magical things start happening.

If there is a guy giving out magic hugs, than a certain part of the population will have their suspicions about what happened verified. "It was God, and God has sent this guy to take my pain" or "It was magic, and here is another guy with magic".

But if there are no further extraordinary events other than the departing, than everyone just has to figure out their lives for themselves without being given answers

In short...if there are magic hugs, the show is now a mystery where you are trying to figure out what's going on, instead of just focusing on how the characters and town are coping

Eh...I think it's perfectly fine (and probably beneficial to the show), to have at least one "supernatural" element (besides the actual Departure). And even that one possible supernatural element is questionable AND it's ties into your whole "watching people cope with the Departure."

It's not necessarily my favorite part of the show, but I'm very interested to see how it all ends up playing out. Its also making me really wish I had read the book already. Does anyone know if this is just suppose to be a one season show?

btw...Grantland does pretty good re-caps on these episodes. They seem to believe its a placebo effect type of hug.

I guess since the focus was on Nora, I didn't put it together while watching it, but I later realized there was some very blatant referencing and foreshadowing regarding the Wayne situation in the first conference that Nora goes into trying to find the person with her name tag, the speech was about "The Profits Dilemma" about how many delusional people pop up after events that defy scientific explanation thinking they are getting messages from a higher power, and if left unchecked can become extremely dangerous

first thing i thought of in regards to the magical hugs was the x-files episode where mulder had cancer & went to find the person/mutant that took people's cancer & illness away from them but was then left in awful shape itself as it was made up of pretty much nothing but others' illnesses

i mean, i don't foresee that being what the hug guy is doing, just that his actions (sans the cash grab from doing so) made me think of that x-files scene

There is much to be said for a convincing placebo.

it is if they're charging $1000 a pop

a lot of absurdly wealthy televangelists who can back that up

^^if he believes in what he is doing, charging $1000 bucks a pop does not make him a con artist, people are paying for a service and from everything we've been shown, the service works exactly as advertised.

She wants to hold onto the pain of losing her family. And when she starts to forget the pain, she has to do something drastic to bring it back

Question about he message on her machine. Is that an old message she keeps playing over and over? Everything she's doing that day seems like it's recycled, but the message was a pretty severe apology, and she didn't know he had cheated on her until the priest told her right?

I liked Grantland's opinion on the gunshot/Kevlar vest:
