lol @ Tobias. Dude has the foresight to break into the school (assuming he broke in since it was locked) to raid the food supply but he doesn't even have a getaway car? Was he planning on just wheeling it home on that cart? And they didn't even take any with them when they left? His weapon of choice is a steak knife btw. At least take the crowbar she used to pry open the medicine cabinet.

Also, how does he know so much about the zombies? I think it is perfectly reasonable for everyone to expect the government to contain it but he's all talking about how this will be a long drawn out situation like he's already seen the first few seasons of TWD.

There's been zombie movies long before TWC, I assume he's watched those and has thought about a zombie apocalypse before. But yeah, him just showing up in the school, with no car and not taking the food didn't make a lot of sense. And yes, a steak knife? Did he not have another one or a pocket knife or hatchet at home he could have gotten? And yes, it is pretty funny that they've already killed-off 3 black guys in the first 2 episodes.

It's starting to draw me in a little, it's only going to get crazier from here.

i like the way they used the riot to take down LA, im guessing many people will die, and then come back and the people will still get mad at the cops for shooting down the walkers

Made it though the first episode but almost fell asleep. I just can't see this lasting very long. This should have been a gimme but they royally fucked up. They should bow out gracefully now before they destroy the entire genre.

So I got rid of cable recently and watched this on my laptop with headphones.

The experience is much creepier when you cant hear anything but the show.

Why did their neighbor have a maze in their back yard? If they saw that zombie go into their house to eat the dog, why didn't they just run out their neighbor's front door to their house when the dad came back?

AND WHY IS THE ONE KID STILL WEARING THE CLOTHES THAT HE STOLE FROM THE OLD MAN??

Have we not run the "safe guy is dangerous for the group" trope into the ground? After seeing a guy shotgunned in the face being the only way to take him out, you no longer take chances with your family.

And the antagonism between the hispanic family and the main one seems awfully forced to me.

yeah wtf. dude is a straight up pussy. OMG GUNS!! in a zombie apocalypse. we'll just wait it out til the police/army to arrive, oh wait, that didn't work. it's ok though, they'll come this time. and they did. just in time.

he doesn't know it's a zombie apocalypse. he hasn't really seen much., and he (nor anyone else) really understands what's happening, and doesn't know what's wrong with his neighbors, and if there's treatment to cure the infected. and really, if the dead came back to life and tried to eat the living, it would be pretty hard to believe, and you wouldn't want to believe it, and a lot of people would deny it until they couldn't anymore (and before you knew much about it, most people would have a hard time shooting their neighbor/friend in the head with a shot gun, or bashing in their skull with a hammer.

i dunno, i don't think the army could contain every single city/town in the entire country, and many would desert the military and government when they realized what was happening.

Why would you desert the military? Military bases are damn near self sufficient communities (MREs, weapons, water, fuel, etc) and filled with people who are trained to secure a location.

Of course it's hypothetical, but after they realized the dead were coming back to life, they might want to be with their families and loved ones instead of protecting people they don't know. Also, I would think that some of the religious folks would think it's the apocalypse/Revelations, and they wouldn't see the point in trying to stop it, and again, would rather be with their family.

I mean at this point the guy had witnessed the coke dealer in zombie mode and ran him over several times.

He witnessed people being eaten during the riots.

He witnessed the guy displaying similar behavior eating the dog. I don't know why he wouldn't at least run when he saw that rather than let it get that close to him.

The heroin addict kid said he'd witnessed several counts of it.

There had been reports on the news and video of police dumping rounds into people affected by it.

He watched the power grid shut down, which has to trigger something in his mind that it's more than just the riots in the area he was in if it could shut down the whole valley.

The girlfriend/mother witnessed it at the school and had a conversation with the nerd kid about it. It's pretty much their own fault for not communicating that.

The school was evacuated and if the mother hadn't expected some serious shit, why would she break into the medicine cabinet where she works? The school has metal detectors, surely they also had video cameras.

Also, the garden maze thing - when she realized it was him pulling up (in a completely foreign vehicle no less) - why didn't she go out the front door rather than go back through the maze?

I get that I would probably be reluctant to just start shooting people not fully being aware of what the situation was, but I damn sure wouldn't try to hug it out with a guy that just ate a dead dog and exhibited the characteristics I had seen/heard/read about - at least GTFO of the room - and yeah you might not be a gun nut, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't protect yourself and your family in case the worst did come to fruition.

Yeah, you're pretty much right. I could understand why someone who didn't know what was going on would be hesitant to kill their neighbors, but he'd seen enough to know that he shouldn't try to reason with the zombie and should get away from him.

I don't think the asian's were their next door neighbors, i think their bakyard abutted up each others. She saw the guy pulling up when she was at the intersection, and turned instead of going straight and following her husband..

I feel like you folks wouldn't be asking these questions if you lived in a world without the zombie trope. If we'd never seen TWD and the idea of the living dead had never been presented to us, I could see these folks' actions as reasonable.

^ i agree

If an actual catastrophe like this were to break out, people aren't going to just assume the world is ending and act accordingly. They're going to believe the world is like it always has been, and that a disease is breaking out that's not necessarily communicable in normal ways.

Actually I think that was his truck. Very convenient, however, that amongst all the rioting where people are rolling cars over and setting them on fire and stuff, his truck was completely untouched and exactly where he left it.

Well to be fair his truck wasn't in the middle of the worst of the riots. Think if it had been on the same street as the Barber shop it might have been destroyed, but it looked like the area his truck was wasn't as damaged. I was more surprised they were able to drive out of there when they said the police had the entire area blocked off.

I think the things that frustrated me the most were the mom and 2 kids in the house just doing dumb things. Oh there is a loud noise outside? Let's wave our flashlights out the window so people know we're in here. Oh there is a guy outside that looks infected? Let's leave our door open.

And then I loved how the soldiers were like "have you come into contact with any infected?"..."what is that then?" Oh it's ok, they just buried their dog, no reason to ask them about the blood splatter all over the wall/curtains.

If I had never heard of zombies before (even though Evil dead and other series were out before TWD) I'd have assumed it was a PCP epidemic or whatever the guy in Florida was on when he ate that dude's face (K2? Crocodile?) Either way, if I had seen it before and took enough initiative to run somebody over, I wouldn't be trying to reason with somebody exhibiting the same symptoms.

I don't have a problem with leaving the neighbor lady alone because she was ostensibly trapped or even from running from the zombie guy.

^^i agree.

so...none of the main characters bothered to turn on a radio or anything to see if their was any kind of news or announcement about the chaos? it seems like for all the "we don't know what's going on, people are getting sick and dying" stuff they said, not to mention the rioting, they would've been inclined to seek out some source of news...power was out, but a battery powered radio or the truck radio would seem like a pretty obvious thing to turn on.

exactly. it's obvious that in TWD universe, no one has ever seen anything like Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later, etc. the whole idea of reanimated corpses that want to eat you and can only be re-killed by destroying the brain has never been presented to them.

that seems insane though right? zombie myths have been around for hundreds of year (at least).

good fiction makes the rules of their universe fairly explicit. TWD universe, and other zombie apocalypse universes, sets itself up as our world but zombies are real.

not sure how they would make it explicit one way or the other, but i've certianly never made that assumption.

as i was typing this up, i decided to google this and found that Kirkman DID say those dont exist. but he did that kinda late in the run, seems kinda revisionist.

Gotta suspend a bit of disbelief I suppose. While it's "realistic fiction" or "fictional realism" or whatever they call "regular people" adapting to crazy situations, they have to set themselves up somehow.

Also, I haven't watched this show (yet?) but I don't think I will. Regular TWD is frustrating and inconsistent enough for me.

i have no problem suspending disbelief. A fictional universe can establish whatever rules they choose as long as they dont just make them up out of nowhere and at least somewhat establish them. Like if in the next episode kim dickens pulls out a wand and disappears a zombie and they say "oh yea, magic exists in this universe too"

I'm not sure how the would establish that zombie fiction doesnt exist but i certainly never made that assumption before.

overall pretty minor though and doesnt affect my enjoyment, just curious

it was pretty much established in the first episode of TWD when Rick meets Morgan and Morgan explains what's going on, but doesn't say "yeah, man, this is just like that movie..."

how else do you establish that such a genre doesn't exist other than simply not mentioning it or alluding to it?

Seems pretty apparent that the concept of "zombies" doesn't exist in this world. The fact that no one ever uses the word "zombie" should be a pretty good sign. I mean if zombies existed or some concept of zombies existed, wouldn't everyone be calling them some unified name? Also, wouldn't people have an idea of how to properly kill them a lot sooner?

I think you almost HAVE to set the world up like that or it makes the concept of the outbreak less believable. You wouldn't have cops putting 20 bullets into the core of a zombie, you'd have everyone knowing exactly how to kill them. I mean yeah you'd still have people ill-prepared, but I find it hard to believe so many people would have no idea what is going on or how to properly defend themselves.

Right...and while they aren't calling them zombies or anything, there are a couple of characters who have seemed to recognize that what is happening is very bad and is going to lead to some really crazy stuff. That nerdy student with the knife earlier...he seemed to be alluding to some sort of apocalyptic-type thing going down. I think he said stuff like "it's happening, I have to be ready" or something. Same goes for the dude that owned the barber shop. He's already in survivalist mode (showing the kid how to use a gun, not being afraid of shooting a walker) and he mentioned the stepdad being "weak"...kinda implying that he is already thinking of this being a very severe outbreak that is not isolated. While that certainly isn't acknowledging the existence of zombies, it at least shows that the idea of a doomsday scenario sparked by some unstoppable sickness is something that is at least a thought in the minds of some. I don't know...maybe that's a stretch and it's really just survival instincts kicking in.

I also agree with ^ too, though
