Quote :
"With the season finale of True Detective upon us tonight, HBO has released the first teaser of their upcoming show, Westworld, and it looks fantastic.

There’s some unsettling images here as the robots looking blankly on as flies buzz across their faces and an interesting mix of modern, science fiction-looking rooms back to back with sweeping expanses of the West, along with a couple of other glimpses of the show in the 30 or so seconds from the teaser.

This remake of the original Michael Crichton film looks like it’s going to be really exciting, and we’re pumped that Jonathan Nolan is playing around with robots and AI again after Person of Interest. The teaser also tells us that the series is coming in 2016, which is further out than originally anticipated."

Wow, your follow up post tells us less than that.

Serialized rehash of a 1970s Michael Critchon film. It's about some future theme park centered around AI.

I love how the plot seems written for blood and nudity.

Trailer looked awesome. Starts in October! Hopefully all the delays are a thing of the past.

This is really the only new show HBO has in their pipeline that I have any interest in.

So do the NPCs wake up and do/say the same thing every cycle (which I assume is 2 weeks based on the frat guys on the train)? or every day? Because it would make sense to be every cycle but that chick definitely seemed to wake up and do the same thing at least two or three times while the same cycle was going on.

Also, producing the NPCs definitely reminded me of Synth production in Fallout 4

Lot of questions come out from the pilot, but I suppose that's to be expected. It's all very confusing at this point, in my opinion, but without a doubt I'll keep watching.

I suppose my biggest question is WTF is Ed Harris up to?

got halfway through before HBO Go started being uncooperative (said something about error come back later) and nothing I did could help (reset network, log out/in, etc.). I'll try to come back to it. What I saw was cool.

Yeah, Ed Harris brought a lot of questions. I'm sure the "rules" of the world will be laid out in the coming episodes. But it seemed odd that they could keep track of all of the newcomers and what everyone is up to, yet Ed Harris is just off on his own killing and mutilating hosts un-monitored.

I don't think they are concerned with what he's doing, people come there to rape, murder, and torture if they want, all the company is concerned with is making sure the hosts don't hurt a real human.

A couple random thoughts/questions:

Harris said he'd been coming for 30 years, also they said the last critical failure they had was ~30 years ago, I wonder if Harris or someone in his family or something was involved in the critical failure (also it could have just been a reference to the original movie)

The cold storage area where they keep all the old and shut down hosts, before they opened the giant door there was a fountain with a big metal globe in it, it almost seemed like a city scape, not a place for cold storage,

I also enjoyed the music, especially black hole sun on the player piano

This soundtrack > Zimmer's death trumpets.

If Nolan can mange to not destroy the simple, yet fascinating plot-lines of Chricton, the show will be good. The hosts and programmers talk about dreams too much already. Anthony Hopkins is the best.

+1

so I got really confused because pretty early on they said "you can't hurt newcomers", which I thought meant they had an invisible shield thing, but then they were all worried about actually hurting a person.... so I guess it's just a 'rule'

and so Ed Harris is invincible, why? I thought it was because 'you can't hurt newcomers' but apparently you can?

WHY CAN'T you kill him though?

yeah i'm not sure about the mechanism of hosts not being able to hurt guests...i was thinking they could still probably kill themselves/each other right? i'm sure this is all explained elsewhere, but i haven't noticed this show cover it yet.

I assume the guns don't actually fire real bullets, but rather just those little balls of powder, and all the hosts are covered head to toe in explosive sqibs under their skin.

After all you wouldn't want the guests shooting each other either.

This could be totally wrong, just my theory.

not one of who? one of the hosts? guests/newcomers?

i caught some clues that he is probably the super billionare who invested early on or something and "likes to play cowboy"... so they let him be invincible? why? I guess that is how the storyline is going to progress but that seems like a wide open liability waiting to happen with a psycho running around doing all the deranged things he wants.

Myabe he agreed to avoid newcomers or something? but still what happens when he doesn't? he can't be killed

also when those goober newcomers shot the people that shot up the middle of town, I take it those people were actually live? it seemed pretty bad when those people got shot, were they there to collect or kill the updated hosts? I thought they could use their shiney lights and pause shit when it got out of hand...or was it a skit? why was that unplanned thing thrown in there like that? I still have so many questions

Host, you know, cause it appears he can't be harmed. Or going with ^^^'s theory, maybe he actually is a host without the exploding things

That's what all the guests are doing...it seems to be in their wheelhouse.

All this makes me want to watch the movie for some basic answers, but I'm afraid it might ruin the series some. Thoughts for those who watched the movie?

I'm fairly sure everyone who got shot there was a host. I got the impression there were human park staff that come in to clean up the bodies while being as unobtrusive as possible. They are dressed appropriately so as to keep the immersion intact. They could use the lights if they needed to but would only do so during a malfunction.

Nothing went "wrong" or got out of hand in that gunfight, the lead writer was just annoyed that the host didn't get to say the new speech he wrote.

So I'm starting to wonder how the hosts are "prevented" from hurting guests. Someone mentioned that the guns just shot blanks/squibs before but that can't be right, whenever one of the hosts tries to shoot Ed Harris, you see the dust and stuff fly off of his clothes. He's definitely getting hit by some kind of projectile but he clearly doesn't even react to it. And I'm not sure what happens when two guests interact with each other and try to shoot one another. And what if one of the hosts was just to punch a guest in the face? I guess maybe their programming would prevent them, but one that one host woke up in the lab she didn't seem to have any qualms about stabbing people with the scalpel (and the people cleaning her up were legit scared of her).

Andymac suggested the hosts fire balls of powder above which would explain the bullet part of your question. As to whether or not they can hurt someone in some other way I would guess what you do, that their programming wouldn't let them, but yeah, them being afraid of the prostitute who woke up doesn't jive with that other than maybe just being scared that because she's been acting abnormally maybe her programming is messed up

holy run on sentence

So what would stop 2 players from hurting one another? If players are able to hurt one another, how could they prove you didn't think you were shooting a host?

Looks like Dolores might have just found herself a working gun. That could make things interesting.

Even if it is a ball of powder though -- that thing would be traveling fast to mimic a bullet. If it hit you in the eye, it could blind you. They have gone to a lot of depths to make sure that people cannot get hurt.

I'm also wondering what if one of the hosts unknowingly does something -- like when Dolores dropped that can of food or whatever -- if some idiot stuck his head down there it could leave a bump if it smacked him. If that can happen, what is stopping another host from accidentally doing something that could hurt someone? I guess the program could "freeze" or whatever? Like when that rattlesnake was about to bite Anthony Hopkins?

Which is actually another thing I'm really curious about -- how do they "get" into the world? That one guy just walked through a door and was suddenly on a moving train. Maybe some kind of teleportation portal or something?

I guess maybe we can just chalk everything up to futuristic technology of some kind or maybe they'll explain it in the future. Not nitpicking by any means, the show just has me thinking [which is good].
