James Henderson says that's pretty normal for assistant coaches apparently...especially in their 1st year on staff. They just roll it over for next season/keep extending it

any particular reason why bucky keeps mentioning scenarios we might need an interim coach? Keatts have health problems or something?

I dont understand why UNCW needed an "interim" coach but it would seem he had an inside track to get the HC job. Assuming that's true, its big-time that he decided to stay loyal to KK.

^UNCW started 3 seniors and it sounds like some of UNCW's recruits(esp JUCOs) are going to be looking at other options now(including NC State).

I think he knew that inheriting that program at <$100k/year without a stronger contract in place was a fast track to looking for a job. They'll take a dip next year and potentially have their best 2 SO transfer out(hey CJ Bryce, want to come sit a year?) with Keatts leaving.

If he takes that job, they have an awful season next year, he's making $90k and hoping Keatts still has a position for him. He takes our job at $300k for a year, and he gets more money, less responsibility, and still has a chance at earning a HC gig at a smaller program soon.

I was thinking about this yesterday and it may be shitty to ask but do we really want UNCWs recruits? 2K may see something in them but just from as far as I can tell on paper, UNCW tends to recruit unranked or like 3* guys every once in a while. Aren't we on another level in the ACC? Seems like we'd be risking a scholarship and even if they did follow 2K here, they might risk not playing. Not to be high and mighty if coach sees them fitting in their system, and not saying that rankings capture everything, either but just wondering.

I mean those 2 and 3* players almost beat UVA this year and Duke last year. How well did we do with our top 10 recruiting class?

We just lost our only commit for 2017, we're going to need some guys to help with depth. If Keatts think the guys fit his system, then so be it.

I'd rather have a 3* that fits our system perfectly than a 5* that doesn't(hello Yurtseven).

Star ratings make more sense if you look at them as probabilities.

Say, a 5* has a 90% chance to be a contributing starter and a 70% chance to be a star while a 3* has a 80% chance to be a good bench guy, 60% to be a good starter and 20% to be a star.

Those are all made up off the top of my head but you get my jist.

If Siddle had stayed as interim coach and was hired as head coach, he wouldn't be making $90,000. It's pretty dumb to think that. He was never going to actually coach a game as the interim coach.

Like it's been said, he was named interim to run the program (recruit, practice, etc.) until they hired a new coach. I doubt UNCW was seriously considering him for the vacancy though, as he is pretty inexperienced.

^^^^^^ I read where the year Siddle was at hargrave, they had 12 players that got D1 scholarships. I dont know exactly how that works, but I imagine there's a good bit of recruiting that goes into getting guys to go to hargrave vs other similar schools.

Siddle would have only ended up their HC if they had a Sidney Lowe-level bad search, which is highly unlikely considering the guy who hired Keatts after they won 9 games is still there and he's inheriting a program coming off 29 with two studs returning in Cacock and Bryce

Just a heads up of how that works...

Chances are they already have someone in mind...but NC law says they have to advertise it.

They'll pull it down quickly but until the hire clears background and all they have it listed. Or unless someone more qualified applies...which isn't likely.

http://www.foxsports.com/college-basketball/gallery/college-basketball-coaching-hires-rumors-details-rankings-archie-miller-kevin-keatts-cuonzo-martin-041217

Quote :
"#1 NC State: Kevin Keatts (former UNC-Wilmington head coach)

Part of ranking the hires is balancing the coach with the school hiring him. For that reason alone, Keatts is atop this list. Not because he’ll necessarily be better than Miller at Indiana, but because relative to the school, no one did a better job at finding a coach.

The past decade or so of Wolfpack basketball has been a mess, as NC State has been led by a couple of coaches short on experience (Sidney Lowe) and success (Mark Gottfried). So for them to go out and get one of the hottest young coaches in the sport – a guy who has made two straight NCAA tournaments, is a proven recruiter and plays a fun style of basketball – it’s a home run.

Will NC State be competing with Duke and North Carolina atop the ACC standings going forward? Probably not. But the Wolfpack will be much improved and competitive. And for that reason alone, they've made the best coaching hire of the offseason. "

This has become my most hated narrative from the national media. The last six ACC champions:
2012 Florida State
2013 Miami
2014 Virginia
2015 Notre Dame
2016 North Carolina
2017 Duke.

If competing with UNC and Duke is such a lofty and unattainable goal, then we must also have no chance against FSU, Miami, UVA, and ND either. And forget about regular perennial top 10 programs like Syracuse and Louisville. So that's like half the conference we should never expect to compete with.

yeah that's such bullshit. if fucking FSU, Miami, and UVa can win ACC titles there is absolutely no reason we can't. it's not like Duke and UNC are the only good teams in the ACC.

Interesting you stopped at 2012...

1997 North Carolina
1998 North Carolina
1999 Duke
2000 Duke
2001 Duke
2002 Duke
2003 Duke
2004 Maryland
2005 Duke
2006 Duke
2007 North Carolina
2008 North Carolina
2009 Duke
2010 Duke
2011 Duke
2012 Florida State
2013 Miami
2014 Virginia
2015 Notre Dame
2016 North Carolina
2017 Duke.

Plus when it comes to "competing with Duke and North Carolina atop the ACC standings" they're talking regular season, not whoever manages to win the tournament.

^it's a valid point....if you're gonna win the ACC you're gonna have to go through Duke and UNC, two teams that are almost always top 15 at worst. nobody's really debating that. but to act like it's impossible and hasn't been done by other teams is not true. UVa and Miami have won regular season titles in recent years. competing at a level near the top of the standings (say, top 1/3 or 1/4 of the conference) would be a big step towards the goal of winning a conference title. so just for argument's sake, let's say that finishing in the 1/4 of the standings is roughly equivalent to "competing with Duke and North Carolina atop the ACC standings" which was the original quote from that article. well...finishing in the top ~4 of the standings would, in my opinion, come pretty close to "competing for an ACC (regular season) title". it would likely mean we're within maybe 2 games of 1st place. that's not really an unreasonable or unattainable goal to have, is it? of course we want to win titles, not just be close to winning titles. and maybe i'm nit-picking on semantics here...but Duke and UNC aren't the only ones competing for ACC titles, there's no reason we can't hope to be up there with ND, UVa, FSU, or other teams that have been at or very near the top of the regular season standings

Yeah that's the dumb part, not the fact that UNC and Duke are usually on top of our league.

i think that's kinda the disconnect between the media narrative of "state fans want to be as good duke and unc and that's unrealistic" and the fan expectations/hopes of simply being in the conversation. we know it's unrealistic to immediately compete at the same level as two of biggest powerhouses in basketball today. but that doesn't mean we can't find our way up there with them (and ND, UVa, UL, FSU, etc) in the ACC standings. the media often presents it as Duke and UNC run the conference and State is lucky to get a win over either team every once in a while. and while that has certainly been the case, there's no reason we can't hope to be better than that. especially considering other teams have made jumps from the middle of the pack to the top of the conference (FSU, Miami, UVa, ND). now, those jumps to the top of the standings may only be for a year or two before they fall back to the pack. but that's still proof that it can be done, even if it is a flash in the pan type season. if anything, it's proof that many teams in the conference are indeed making strides toward consistently competing with Duke and UNC while we have been barely treading water.

Duke and UNC ran the conference back when there were only 9 teams. Super relevant to the current 15-team conference.
