One of the maintenance guys at my apt complex had to fix my AC awhile back. I tried to give him $10 because this guy works his ass off. He flat out insisted he couldn't take the money or he'd be fired. He said an old lady baked him a cake and that was okay. I'll lolled and offered him a can of Slim Jims, which he accepted, haha.

I often don't tip at the sandwich tip jar because it often seems that the sandwich is already more expensive than it's worth. But I always tip at lest 20%+ at restaurants, unless the service was particularly bad.

Beer at a Concert/Sporting Event (the $14 Bud Lights): lol, yeah right
Liquor at Fancy Cocktail Bar ($15+ drink): i don't order anything that takes more steps than pouring and maybe ice, so see above, i don't care if its more expensive the effort is the same
Musicians at a Bar: i've given cash on occasion to request a song, or because i think they are really good, but not by any kind of rule or regularity
Cleaning Services (car, house, yard, etc.): i tip $5 for a $20 car wash, when i've paid to have it detailed i tipped about $50
Construction Services: i've tipped a handy man but i've never tipped a contractor i've hired beyond making sure they have cold drinks
Movers: i've only used a moving service once and was told explicitly by the boss that gratuity was included and that i shouldn't tip the workers

These aren't really exact numbers, i don't generally pull out my phone to calculate an exact %

Restaurant: 18-20%, sometimes a little less or sometimes a little more. but that'smy average
Restaurant Take Out: $0
Sandwich Shop Tip Jar: usually $0, if i'm paying cash i might drop my coin change in there.
Coffee Shop (standard/black coffee): don't really ever go to coffee shops but probably same as sandwich shop
Coffee Shop (fancy coffee): n/a
Food Delivery: couple bucks for something like pizza
Food Delivery (if delivery fee included in price): same as above
Taxi: probably in the 20% range. $5 for a $20 fare seems about right to me, but i'm not a frequent taxi-user at all
Bar: if i have a tab, 18-20% when i close out. if i'm paying cash each time i'm ordering a drink then just $1 or so per drink depending on my change situation. maybe i'll break a $20 for a $5 drink and give a $5 tip, but then i won't tip on drinks after that, for example (maybe that's a bad way of doing it idk). but yeah it usually breaks down to ~$1/drink
Beer only at a Bar: same as above
Beer at a Concert/Sporting Event (the $14 Bud Lights): $0
Liquor at Fancy Cocktail Bar ($15+ drink): don't really ever order that

basically, if i tip i do it at about 20%...but many of these situations either don't apply to me or i don't tip for.

i only tip at my regular coffee shop, but not as any kind of percentage its more about if i have cash on me and if its been awhile since i left a tip. they are open on holidays and i usually tip like $10-$20 those days, the rest of the time its a few bucks here and there

Bar: If I pick up the tab for a group I'll do 20%
Beer only at a Bar: I tip $1 per beer even if the beer itself is $1. Fuck paying more than that to pour a drink. an $8 beer takes the same time/skill to pour as a bud light.
Beer at a Concert/Sporting Event (the $14 Bud Lights): 0
Liquor at Fancy Cocktail Bar ($15+ drink): $2 max
Bar disclaimer: If I'm a regular or spend a lot of time talking to the bartender, I'll tip more like 20-25%+ at the same time, if I'll never be there again and the bartender is a prick to me I have no problems stiffing them.
Musicians at a Bar: A few bucks if I have cash and really like the music
Cleaning Services (car, house, yard, etc.): $5 for car cleaning.

This one depends for me. Most places I don't tip on take out, but I have an exception or two. I tip at Carrburritos because I get take out there almost every week. Places like that and Al's don't really do any table service though, so whether I dine in or get it to go, I don't really see much of a difference that justifies that tip or not. Obviously if its somewhere that I am seated and the server gets my order, brings me food, fills my drinks, etc then I am going to do the 20%+ tip. But do you do the same thing when you line up for the food, get your food when its ready and then bus your own table when you are done?

So do you tip at a place that basically is self service? I do when I dine in (and sometimes when I take out), but I feel conflicted about the justification for even doing it.

I tip the person helping me with take out if I think they earn server/tipped employee wage of $2.13 per hour (eg: your neighborhood bar/grill) who could also be required to tip-out the bussers/cooks/etc. If it's like a burrito place or some other place that doesn't offer table service I do so less often as their wages aren't dependant on tips.

That's not my experience. For me it's rare the tip line isn't there, and I'm nearly always required to sign someting, via a piece of paper or on an iPad POS system.

On the server wage vs minimum wage thing though, how does it actually work if your base+tips don't = the minimum wage of $7.25 over the pay period? Your employer has to make up the difference right?

^i think the consensus seems to be $1 per beer for individual purchases. if you're closing out a tab after multiple beers that is when the 20% seems to be used by people ITT..which, yes, may amount to $.60/beer, but if it's on a $15 bill that's a pretty standard tip right? like, nobody's slamming down $.60 of coins every time they buy a beer. or calculating exactly 20% for a $3.75 beer and digging in their pockets for change.

I usually try to tip 10-15% for restaurant take out, especially if they don't charge an extra fee to do it. My reasoning is that all the boxes and stuff they use isn't free, and assuming that the tip makes its way to the cooks, they still helped make the meal.

Food Delivery (if delivery fee included in price):0%. If you impose a fee, then that's the fee. Some times I pay the same 10% and subtract the dollar or two but my food delivery is rarely more than $15, so that is usually a 0 net.
Taxi: UBER
Bar: 20%
Beer only at a Bar: 20% or $1/drink if paying cash
Beer at a Concert/Sporting Event (the $14 Bud Lights): $1/drink
Liquor at Fancy Cocktail Bar ($15+ drink): 20%

What I don't know is

Bottle shop: I buy some bottles for home and there is a tip line. What about if I drink a few beers there and then buy bottles, or buy food and beer there and then bottles. I've racked my brain over this too many times.

Haircut: I tend to tip about $5 for that each time but not sure if that's too much or what.

$5 is pretty standard for a standard haircut for men.

I don't tip at my local bottle shop unless I drink there - then it's $1 a drink.

Also, if I start drinking at the bottle shop and end up taking bottles home, I only tip on the alcohol I drank there - not the price of the bottles I leave with.

What are you spending when you have a normal meal out with four people, maybe $200.00 at the edge? I have no idea what the stupid fucking sales tax even is on food. Let's call it 8%, which it probably is not. That'd be $16.00 tax. Let's assume you're tipping 20%. Tipping on the subtotal, that's a $40.00 tip. Tipping with the tax included, that's $43.20. It's not even another five bucks. Or to put that another way, you're talking about tipping an additional 1.6%.

That is so far beyond even mattering. Who could care? What kind of moron teaches people to make this distinction and argues in its favor?

Like let's say you have lunch by yourself. You get, like, a $15.00 meal at a hibachi place or something. Your total is like $16.20 with tax, who could possibly give a shit? You feel generous and decide to tip 25%. That's $3.75 on the subtotal, $4.05 on the total. It's fucking 30 cents. What the hell is wrong with you?
