^At the rate things are going, the entire roster of each team will have had COVID before September.

Think you're going to see some really weird situations soon where some states are all-in on football and some areas/states will push back. Not really sure how the NCAA is going to handle it. Ideally they'd just make a unilateral decision but you can bet all of the top programs and the entire SEC is going to be pushing hard for a season.

I think the NCAA has already said it's up to the individual schools. It's more a question of how conferences handle the situation, especially conferences with a large geographic footprint, like the ACC.

If I were the president of BC, I wouldn't want my team exposed to schools from a state currently seeing a spike in COVD-19 cases and deaths, like FSU, Clemson, or any of the NC schools. So would BC officially forfeit these games? That doesn't seem very fair.

I think we should forfeit to any SC based teams, for safety

In his scenario, if you're a team like BC and you refuse to play against teams from a state with spikes in cases or just a ton of active cases, what would your options be other than forfeiting?

If BC has a road game @FSU and refuse to travel into FL for the game, FSU isn't going to just cancel the game, they're going to want that free W.

You're going to potentially see a ton of OOC games cancelled, particularly if they don't allow fans in the stands. I don't see teams wanting to eat the costs of traveling to unnecessary games, particularly any out-of-state options or places with high numbers of confirmed cases.

Feel like the ACC will try to make it work but could realistically just see a scenario where we only play our conference games and any OOC school willing to come to Raleigh to play us. Will be more interesting to see if they actually have bowl games this year, especially in states that aren't allowing fans, I don't see any bowl sponsors being cool with eating that cost.

Ultimately a lot of this is going to be down to governors of the individual states and their mandates regarding interstate travel. The ACC is based in 10 states. At the moment, the New York State Government are requiring Florida State to be in quarantine for 2 weeks in order for them to play their game in Syracuse November 19th. Obviously stuff will change in the next 5 months. I know from WWE based in Connecticut (same travel ban to Florida as New York) that they are getting around this travel ban by flying into and out of Philadelphia and driving the rest of the way to their homes in Connecticut. College football tries to do that trick it's going to be heavily reported on however if they try that loophole.

I'm expecting a lot of politicians suddenly becoming weak and forced by unnamed powerful people to allow waivers for everything to carry on: NFL, college, and high school. Otherwise they back the other guy in an election year.

I wouldn't be surprised if say 80% of the Bowls just took this year off. The only business case you can make for them is TV rights fees if that revenue stream alone can turn the bowl a profit.

it has nothing to do with being cool with anything

more important industries are losing more money than Duke Mayonnaise losing sponsorship money on a sporting event

Google searched and found the 2017-18 ACC Bylaws. I looked for forfeits but it only talked about it in regards to money and dealing with player eligibility. Think this is probably the key bylaw for this situation:

Quote :
"Section I-6. Suspended or Canceled Conference Competition.

In instances when intra-conference competition has been suspended or canceled the following principles are understood (Adopted: 10/2009):

1. Protocol for determining if a suspension or cancellation is required is included in the specific sport’s Game Operations Manual or the Olympic Sports Policies and Procedures Guide.
2. If it is determined that a regular season conference contest should be suspended or canceled and it cannot be rescheduled, the contest will not be factored into the conference standings. Refer to the sport sections of the Sports Operation Code or sport specific tie breaking procedures."

By the way, in these bylaws there's an entire article dealing with Notre Dame since they don't play football in conference. But they define in the bylaws the distribution of TV income the ACC receives that is football and not football since Notre Dame should not get any share of the football revenue. It's 80% football, 20% everything else.

Rumors circulating that DD has added another member to the staff.

I've seen Ruffin McNeil's name floated as a possibility. Another has been Torry Holt.

Somebody set the betting odds on this season actually happening, in regular form, and in any form.

(and be willing to accept bets on stated odds)

"NC State has hired Ruffin McNeill as Special Assistant to the Head Coach.

McNeill, who is known best by people in the region as ECU's head coach from 2010-2015, has 30-plus years of coaching experience. At his alma mater, McNeill posted a 42-34 record in six seasons, including a 10-3 mark in 2013, which is the second-most single-season wins in school history.

The Lumberton, North Carolina native played college football at ECU from 1976-1980. McNeill was a three-year starter at defensive back as well as a two-year captain under legendary head coach Pat Dye.

After graduating from ECU in 1980, McNeill began his coaching career at Clemson as a linebacker graduate assistant coach, while also earning his master's degree in counseling.

Over the next 35 five years outside his time at ECU, McNeill's stops included Appalachian State, Fresno State, UNLV, Texas Tech, Virginia and most recently Oklahoma. During that span, he served as the defensive coordinator at Appalachian State, Fresno State, UNLV and Texas Tech.

In his three seasons with the Sooners, McNeill was the assistant head coach. He also coached the defensive tackles in 2017 and 2018 (interim defensive coordinator midway through season) and outside linebackers in 2019."

i might be wrong, but i think giving him that title is a bit of a workaround for limits on the number of actual "coaches" you can have on staff. kinda like alabama hiring a lot of coaches and calling them "analysts".

Means he can't coach on the sidelines during games and he can't actively recruit off-campus.

He's going to help with game-planning, player development, building relationships with HS coaches, working with our defensive coaches, etc.

Believe he CAN recruit when we have recruits on campus, so that'll be helpful but really wish he could recruit for us, particularly in Eastern NC.

One of my favorite things about the massive build up of college football programs is the imaginative titles these coaches get.

McNeil win-loss record-wise did a decent job at ECU. Reason they got rid of him was he let the players do whatever and they were not being disciplined at all.

Special Assistant to the Head Coach. Was that Amato's job when he went back to Florida State?

I don't get anyone's reservation with the McNeill hire, this is the EXACT thing Saban, Dabo, Riley, etc, all do. They hire former HCs to come in and be on the staff, they provide a ton of insight and experience and they can absolutely help build relationships with the local schools(because most know their name and former success) and they can recruit really well on campus. The difference is those bigger schools take recent P5 fired HCs and help them re-establish their career before taking their next gig, we're just getting the luxury of having one in a specific family situation that is working out for both of us.

Hard not to be excited about the staffs on paper when comparing the proposed 2020 staff vs what we had last year.

That was echoed a ton on twitter and reddit, so seeing it here just echoed those sentiments.

I'm saying he won't just be an interim HC "when Doeren is fired", I'm saying he's going to be a solid hire that is going to help Dave keep his job going forward.
