I still am convinced that TOB is a better coach than Doeren. He had more quality wins, a better record against UNC, a better bowl record, and never went winless in the ACC.

And recruited worse players and played in a much easier ACC than DD.

He had Russell fucking Wilson and couldn’t do better than 5-3 in the acc.

DD had NFL caliber QBs and didn't accomplished jack shit besides some vanity metrics in 8 years here. How many more crushing loses to Mack Brown will it take to see that?

DD didn’t have a QB as good as TOB and still has accomplished more.

Quit worrying about unc and Mack. We’re fine.

Crazy to think that Dunn would miss two field goals when he is 90% on field goals under 50 yards, and we lose by 2 points.

^^ ^Accomplished more? I disagree, and 95% of wolfpack nation thought Wilson was undersized and had no future as a NFL QB. Hell, wasn't he a part-time QB for us and was playing baseball during the spring???

Saying not to worry about UNC/Mack is an odd thing to say. The score of the last two games that old man Mack played against DD is 89-31. DD is an average coach, just like TOB, I'll say let him coach until his contract expires but be looking for better alternative into the meantime.

I don’t mean that our results vs them don’t matter. Of course we want to win every game we play, and especially so vs them. What I meant was that panicking or firing a coach because they’re improving and better all of a sudden or recruiting well isn’t the right thing. Like, results vs them aside, you can’t just say “well look at UNC’s recruiting class we need to be worried”.

And that’s not really how coaching contracts work. You never let it expire. You’ll pay millions in buyout before you let it expire. You handcuff your recruiting when you don’t commit to a coach long term. It’s better to pay $10M in buyout money than have a lame duck coach with 1 year left on his contract trying to build a roster.

I think you might be putting too much emphasis on a bowl loss in which our best 3-4 defenders were out. Sucks to lose. But it’s a glorified exhibition. DD has the program on solid footing. He damn near nearly won ACC COY this year. And all this was done with out the #1 QB for the majority of the year. He ain’t perfect and is certainly deserving of criticism. But he’s fine.

Also, RW was infinitely better than Jacoby and Ryan Finley regardless of what any State fans thought about his NFL potential. We absolutely should’ve won more games when he was here.

DD could lose by 50 to UNC every year and still be a good coach. You can't evaluate a coach against one team. In a normal year we would've had one or two extra cupcake wins and a starting QB.

I guess you're an oracle then. Wilson was drafted #75, there was no hype about him making noise in the NFL until he got there and showed his merit.

He is but with that logic University of Michigan should of went undefeated when they had one of the greatest QBs of all time in Tom Brady. I'm not looking at this one lost, I'm literally looking at the summation of data since he's been a coach here. The results are average at best. I get it, he coached here when FSU won the championship and when Clemson won multiple ones. I never expected him to compete with those programs during those years, but he consistently comes up in the lower half of the ACC. He's an average coach, not a bad one, just not great. If we're going to move the needle we need a better coach.

The 0-8 and 1-7 years were historically bad. No way around it. But DD is not consistently finishing in the bottom half of the acc. That’s just not true.

Never said anything about hype. I just never thought he didn't have a future as an NFL qb. He could make every throw in college, was mobile and threw the best deep ball I'd ever seen (and still have seen). I think most State fans (and probably most ACC fans knew he had a future as an NFL qb. He only got drafted 75th because he's 5'10 or whatever. That's it. That was THE knock on him. If he was 6'3 he'd have been a top 5 pick.

It was a great performance with a depleted team. We were missing our top 4 guys on defense and the 5th went out during the game. At the end of the day, this loss is on Dunn's inexplicable misses.

If we had 1 less INT or 1 less missed/blocked FG we could've won, which makes this game frustrating for us. Despite that, the team was executing decently other than Hockman's insistence at making literally every pass open to interception. I swear every single time he passed the ball my heart stopped.

Despite the loss, I'm really not too let down by the bowl game. Like someone else said above, it's not really gonna shift the direction of the program too much. We've got good QB depth in the coming years, hopefully Hockman will find a happy forever home on some AAC/G5 team where he can ball out, and we can continue on our team's current trajectory of improving steadily.

Simply being in the game with many starters out is a great performance. We had so many young guys who had never started playing the whole game. The fact that those guys could hold their own is a great sign. Surely, Thomas, Wilson, Ingle, Mcneil, and Leary are worth more than 3 points.

here's some perspective on the job DD has done here and where the program has gone in his tenure. it's not a glowing review of DD, because he doesn't deserve a glowing review, but i think it's pretty fair and interesting. it's also a pretty honest review of what NC State football is in a historical context (spoiler: not great).

https://www.backingthepack.com/nc-state-football/2021/1/5/22213008/nc-state-wolfpack-football-2020-2021-dave-doeren-year-8-edwards-holtz-rein-golden-era-amato-sheridan

Quote :
"The golden era for NC State football can be classified as the 17-year window from 1963-1979. During that time, the Wolfpack posted a 108-74-6 overall record, 69-32-3 ACC record, 6 ACC titles, and 4 ACC Coach-of-the-Year awards. Edwards’ six-year run in the mid-to-late 60’s (39-23 overall record, 31-10 ACC record, four conference titles) was the peak. During the eight combined years Lou Holtz (1972-1975) and Bo Rein (1976-1979) were at the helm, State went 60-30-4 overall and 31-13-2 in ACC play with two ACC titles.

Even during that most successful era of NC State football, the program still had four 3-win years in the midst of that run. That’s almost a quarter of that time.

State has had some incredibly great seasons, but they have mostly been outliers when looking at the entire program history. The measure for true program success can’t be the peaks or valleys, but the average product being put on the field."

Hockman had a rough game. He played well at times tbis season but I would say a performance like this puts Leary back in the driver’s seat for the starting job. Surprised to see Dunn struggle at field goals. I have always thought he is solid but he looked garbage in this game, like he was kicking the ground.

Hockman entering the transfer portal.

Not totally surprising. I’m sure the staff made it clear that Leary is the future plus Ben Finley and McLaughlin being younger guys

Ultimately I wish the best for him but I can't wait to have some solid backup QB depth. He stepped up when he needed to but ultimately we saw why he wasn't the starter at the end of the season.

Can't wait to see what McLaughlin, Finley, and Leary do next year. I hope we don't put McLaughlin in any real game-time scenarios until 2022 or maybe beyond but I'm very excited for our development.

Our qb depth is fine. This is why they want to take a QB in every class. They know guys are going to transfer out after not winning the starting job.

Hopefully we don't see how any qb does next year other than Leary (or many McL if he's a star in practice)

"terribly wrong" feels like an overstatement...but yeah i get what you're saying, leary is the current guy. mclaughlin is expected to be the guy of the future. finley should be #2 on the depth chart next year while mclaughlin redshirts.
