I use PDAnet for USB tethering, why are you against wifi tethering? You can add a password and all.

wifi consumes more battery, makes the phone warm.. I would prefer charging the phone as I used it.. PDANet is $29 right? I wish there was a free alternative..

pdanet is a one-time fee and you only have to pay if you want to visit https sites. well worth it to me. saves me a monthly bill.

Is it possible to mirror the evo and click on the interface from the computer? Like operating the whole phone from your computer.. like I want a 800 by 480 window on my desktop that I can open anytime use it to control my phone then get back to whatever I was doing in Windows..

When I move, I just hope I get more of a 4G connection than where I am now. Strong 4G = no need for internet, which would be awesome to save 50 bucks a month.

Anyone ever had a problem where the context buttons (back, settings, etc.) on the face of the phone no longer respond? OG Droid. I've already factory reset and that didn't fix it. Cleaned the screen really thoroughly too. Phone has never ever been dropped, wet, or mistreated in any way. I considering trying to flash a custom ROM to it to see if that does anything...

simple fix check, did you take the battery out? That happened to a coworker's blackberry and removing the battery fixed it

Also, I miss my HTC Diamond Touch that had free tethering

so i got the thunderbolt yesterday. love it so far.

Ive had two blackberries prior so this is really my first smartphone. is there a good website to learn how to use this thing or good apps i should get lists etc?

I want to stay away from any techy information and just get recommendations like "hey download this thing it will do ______ which is cool"

Androidpolice.com has an article ever week or so that shows some pretty good apps. I would look there.

what exactly is rooting? i see it voids the warranty so i dont want to do it, but why would some people?

rooting is basically unlocking your phone to its full potential...a lot of good apps require rooting because those apps need permissions to things that your wireless provider and default/stock operating system generally lock...in a sense it turns the consumer-mode phone into a developer-mode phone

but most root programs, ie z4root, have Un-Root options if you ever actually need a warranty swap

Filed an insurance claim on my Droid X today. Said they were out of them and were replacing it with a DROIDX2...

Argued with the rep about it. Thinking it will come w/ a 2GB card instead of 16. Rep says different. Whatever.

Got the replacement. Was a Droid X w/ 2GB card, not a Droid X2 like the dumb CS rep said.

Interestingly, was actually a brand new device instead of the normal refurb units that come from insurance. GPS works again and now I can make and receive calls.

^^ there were like 20 stories on tech blogs a couple months ago that the updated version of the DX (the one you got with the 2gb card) was being labeled as the Droid X2 by several vendors. The guy you talked to was probably going by what their system calls it and knows nothing about a new Motorola phone called the Droid X2 that doesn't actually exist yet like most normal people that aren't tech geeks and/or Android fanboys.

^^^ nvidia probably doesn't have the DRM protection of the Qualcomm's. That's about the only good thing about them.

http://pocketnow.com/android/netflix-app-already-cracked-to-work-on-additional-android
Quote :
"Just hours after Netflix released its Android app with full streaming video support on select Android models, hackers have already enabled the app to work on an additional set of officially unsupported smartphones.

If you've got a Motorola Droid, Droid 2, or Droid X, and you're running Gingerbread thanks to a ROM like CyanogenMod 7, you'll now be able to stream Netflix to your smartphone (with the proper Netflix account, of course). The geniuses who lurk in the XDA-Developers forum managed to crack the device checks for these handsets, reaffirming what we learned earlier from Netflix, that this isn't a DRM issue but one of thoroughly testing each phone model. If you just want access to the company's content, and aren't that concerned with an app that may be slightly less than rock-solid stable, the XDA-D guys have got your back.

Some users trying out the cracked APK have needed to upgrade Flash for the app to work, while others have found success only after moving it to their external SD cards. With some luck, we'll see the app gain support for even more Androids over the coming days and weeks. "

at this point as long as the modding community keeps supporting the OG Droid i really don't have a need to upgrade until LTE gets turned on in Greensboro

So.... if my droid gets pretty hot somewhat frequently (right near the camera on the back), is that bad?

It has also been freezing on me often and turning itself off.

^^That heat pattern happens to my Droid 2 when I have it in my car playing music while navigating with GPS. Sounds like something is running in the background, making the phone be active constantly which would run up the heat. I'd imagine the freezing/shutting off is related to that. A similar freeze/reboot deal was happening to my phone somewhat frequently but it took care of itself. Check your apps and see if there are any updates in the marketplace.

Installing Gingerbread on my Droid 2

ThePeter I'll let you know if I can get Netflix to work once it finishes installing the new OS

...assuming in can get Gingerbread to install...got an error the first time trying to run the .ZIP from the Bootloader, wonder if I need to go back from Fission ROM to Froyo before it will work?
