That's funny, I thought the same thing (about Ben Folds) in parts. Also heard a little bit of Violent Femmes maybe.

But while this CD sometimes gets a little same-y (and also a little too pop in parts), there aren't the usual 3-4 tracks that I can't stand as with most other Avett albums. It is definitely growing on me a lot. Based on what I'd heard (from the EP and a few live performances), I was really worried about this release. Glad I was wrong.

I've basically concluded that this is a Bitch Music album.

Panic at the Disco
Ray Lamontagne
John Legend
Jack Johnson

and

the Avett Brothers

"I think perhaps Megafaun beat TAB to it."

There aren't many bands making an album this year as good as a Megafaun's, but that Avett Brothers record isn't even close for me after 2 listens.

I'm sure I'll give it another chance, but right now it's no contest.

Megafaun went for broke and made a fantastic album, the Avett's played it safe.... and made a boring album.

I have a couple of friends who are completely bonkers about the Avetts, and for years have been telling me how awesome they are and the new record is something I'll love (every time) and whatever.

I keep hearing about how the Avetts are a cool combination of country, bluegrass, and the weird/noisy rock energy that I enjoy in so much music that I love.

So I listen to the Avetts, and I never hear that, but I do hear it when I listen to Gather, Form & Fly. That's what I meant by beating them to the punch.

^ No, I knew exactly what you meant. In fact, when people who do not know Megafaun have asked me what they sound like, I normally respond with, "similar style to Avett brothers, but better" or "how the Avett Brothers are supposed to sound" for the same reasons you mentioned above.

I have always found their material hit or miss, but I felt this album was exceptionally bad on my first few listens. (of course, I also have a tendency to need some time with an album, this one just left me with very little desire to return to it).

I also wonder whether their apparent desire to be as prolific as Ryan Adams has hurt them as well. All that time and energy wasted on marginal EP's with one or two songs, etc.

At least Avett Brothers' fans will have the Rick Rubin excuse to fall back on...

I have never been able to get into TAB. Last winter tuesday nights was "firepit night" for me and friends for like 3 months and they listened to TAB almost every tuesday for the few hours we were there. It wasn't something I hated by any means, I certainly didn't mind it in the setting, but even after all that, it was never something I considered buying. /shrug

I know plenty of people who are nuts for them tho.

Does the Beatles Re-release fit in this thread? Kinda dissapointed. I don't know what I was expecting, but the stereo is pointless.

^ ha well i can understand because I "wrote" all those bleep bloop songs. I found a copy of fruity loops version 3 in a pile of my shit and been driving everyone I live with nuts for the last 2 weeks. Its more fun to make than listen to.

on the serious end Toro Y Moi is one of the only decent things ive heard come out of Columbia, SC.

Ray Lamontagne is awesome...please don't put him under bitch music...especially with Jack Johnson...his music is way more deep than that crud.

What Jay-z said (referring to his quote when he went to the Grizzly Bear concert) reminded me of Busdriver and his new album Jhelli Beam....it's definitely a different kind of rap.

Diving into the Beatles stuff now...the mono mixes of the early stuff sound ten times better than the stereo mixes.
