anyone have a recommended airplane mode (or something to turn off cdma/3G) widget? there's like 10+ in the market and before i went too deep experminting, figure i'd ask here. i tried one or two, but they didn't work the way i wanted.

basically, i have no signal in my bunker of an office at work, but i still have wifi. rather than have my phone search for a signal it'll never find, i'll turn it off, but i need a quicker way to untoggle airplane mode when i leave my workplace. the whole toggling airplane mode then retoggling wifi bit is cumbersome

have not tried beautiful widgets- will do

long power press does have airplane mode, but it turns wifi off as well- i want wifi to stay on without having to navigate anywhere else to turn it back on. i thought i had my wifi to stay on by default if possible, but it doesn't stick

Get APNdroid off the Market. It has a great little widget to toggle 3G/etc.

the definition of airplane mode is changing - a lot of flights now have wifi but people are still used to airplane mode meaning basically all radios are turned off - i think in the end there will be 2 - airplane mode and airplane mode + wifi

Those with the Evo in Raleigh.... are you getting speeds around 1-1.5 MB, or faster? I am curious if Sprint has done everything to the area to really get the speeds 4G can deliver.

Get Speed Test in the Market and try it out.... with T-Mobile 3G I get usually 0.9 - 1 MB.

Well theoretically it's supposed to be a lot higher than that...as long as you have a good signal. And it appears people are having problem with the signal part of that around Raleigh...

"We tested four cities in the Southeast: Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, and Raleigh. AT&T won the Southeast, as the fastest and most consistent of the national 3G carriers overall. Sprint's 4G WiMAX showed wildly varying results in Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh, the three cities where it was installed. Atlanta gave us the fastest WiMAX speed we saw anywhere in the country—but in Raleigh, Sprint's 4G was slower than AT&T's 3G."

http://download.justinjas.com/sprint4g/4g-Cary-Raleigh-NC.html (hover over points for results) - these tests aren't very inspiring, although he was using a "Overdrive Mobile Hotspot" not an Evo, and it was 3.5 months ago

instead of internet crap, I'd be interested to hear what kind of speeds tdub users are seeing...

Thanks for the Incredible case advice.

I ordered a Phantomskinz screen protector ($3 off thanks to that code) and the Seidio Innocase II. I'm assuming I can use them both at the same time...

FYI, Amazon has the Incredible Innocases now (although it says it won't ship for 2 weeks) for $23 and it's eligible for the free Supersaver shipping.

I needed to push my order over $25, so I ordered a microUSB car charger ($7) and an extra microUSB wall charger ($4). What's great is that these chargers are Blackberry branded and are sold by Amazon directly, so I know I'm not getting a cheap knockoff (and I'm not paying Verizon $30 for each either).

You guys have Prey right?

http://preyproject.com/blog/2010/01/prey-arrives-on-mobiles-android-version-available

I got 2mbit down on New Bern Ave earlier this morning. Re: 4G tests. Be careful applying that phantomskin, don't go overboard with the water/baby shampoo/dawn solution!

I paid like 10 bucks a piece for a couple palm microusb car chargers at rat shack. basically a 1A 12vdc to usb adapter with a 2 foot usb cable. I knew they were cheaper online but I doubt much cheaper once shipping is factored in. I had just placed a monoprice order too, so there was no getting around the 5-6 dollar charge. I guess I could have ordered 10 of them.

I need to return an 8GB microSD card and a Zagg Invisible shield to RS, when are they going to get the real accessories in?

A lot of those cheaper chargers won't keep up with the battery drain while running multiple apps and GPS either. You have to check the specs. The Palm Pre accessories are all on clearance everywhere and should be cheaper online too.

never heard of monoprice before, but the site seems pretty good if you need cheap cables.

But in response to:

I searched monoprice and the closest thing I found was a Motorola Razr car charger for $4 shipped.
Didn't find a wall charger at all.
I stand by my Amazon purchases (especially since I needed at least one of them to hit the $25 mark).

just read an article today that made sense to me as i'm considering the leap to android--
don't buy a phone because of the android 'skin' (e.g. touchflo or whatever HTC is calling its version of android) because you'll want to upgrade to the latest and greatest android out there like 2.2 and once you do, the skin will no longer be available for it

thoughts on this argument? eye candy is a big reason why people buy phones (except for blackberry users of course)

^ You just have to wait longer for the update on those with 3rd party skins like SenseUI and motoblur. 2.1 for the Droid was leaked and released before 2.1/SenseUI for the Eris.

Swype for the Incredible. Looks like they've also updated the beta.

I think that argument is a load of shit and some verizon salesman talked this poor girl out of using her 30 days to upgrade the Motorola droid to the Incredible. Basically what that writer is and this fucktard was was saying is that 2.2 is going to hit the Nexus, droid, moment and other vanilla devices first and everyone with HTC will have to wait until they port SenseUI over. Which I guess is true to some extent, but as I have read, 2.2 is basically being designed with this recent wave of phones in mind. I haven't followed android closely enough to know the time span between say the 2.1 motodroid and the 2.1 hero firmware or if the Incredible/Evo/iOS4 will shorten the time it takes for them to release their own 2.2 this time, but I certainly wouldn't boycott HTC devices because you might have to wait a little longer for 2.2

Once someone on XDA ports a fully functional 2.2 over to the Evo or the Incredible everyone that cares is just going to root/flash anyway and not worry about Sense until either some other developer ports that over or HTC puts out their update.

here are the apps I listed awhile back... ^ also had a good list:

handcent (much better than stock messanger)
Astro - file manager
touiteur - if you use twitter (preference of course)
NPR / NY Times / Reuters - good apps for news or streaming NPR
Google Voice - love not calling my carriers voicemail
WordPress - if you use it of course
Scanner Radio - hillarious listening to the Raleigh cops
Tip Calculator - basic, but makes tips easier than how easy it is now
Tube Downloader - good for d/loading youtube videos
Pandora/Slacker -
Shazam - cool
Adobe Reader if you need it
I can send you a link to Swype, which is an amazing keyboard.
Dropbox - if you use it (there are 3rd party ones that may be better)
Google Finance
First Aid / iTriage
Google Goggles
Google Sky Map
Google Gesture - universal search with gestures
Movies - if you go to them
Skyfire - enables some Flash - nice if you arent on Froyo
R-Line - Raleigh buses downtown - VERY accurate
SetCPU - if rooted
Urban Spoon - can be useful for food.

Find a link for swype.... it will change your life.

^ what phone do you have?

I sent an email to someone trying swype for the first time. I gave him some pointers that most of you may know, but just in case it helps someone:

- If you want to capitalize a word that does not start a sentence just start at the first letter and then go up above the KB and then back down to the next letter.. it will capitalize the first letter.
- I think in this version it does contractions automatically…. If not, just go to the ‘ (right of space) while swiping and it will do it automatically
- If certain words are not working well, punch them letter by letter and it will learn the word….
- Still not working well for a certain word, long press it once you typed it and then select “add ___ to dictionary”
- Love that you can long press to get numbers and not have to move to another KB/function.
- With the pop up that comes up it if it second guessing if what they think you wanted is correct…. If your word is at the very top, you can just continue swiping and it will automatically drop that word in….
- Also, found out my wife was pressing “space” each time after a word…. It does this automatically as well (just in case).
- Maybe not an issue on your phone, but it seemed faster on my phone with vibrate and sounds off.

Yeah, there's all kinds of shortcuts I find when I get bored and read through the help or accidentally hit the tip menu.

- instead of long pressing punctuation just swype from the mark you want to the space.
- for double letters wiggle or hoop before moving on
- to select a word from the word box you can just swype through it instead of tapping.

How is web browsing better on the iPhone?

First, you have AT&T so you may not even have data.... second, you are not going to see Flash content... with android you can/can not at your choice (if you have froyo)... third, with android you have tons of browsers to choose from and I think even the default one is better than the iPhone.

I don't get that...

Also... the iPhone multitasking is a joke compared to android. I mean I guess if you ONLY wanted to multitask the system apps you are okay with the iPhone. I think the apple should be shaded b/c android is superior.

The only thing I can think of offhand that's definitely worse on Android than on the iPhone when it comes to web browsing (though it's pretty much across the device in general) is that scrolling is a lot less fluid than on the iPhone.

Other than that, I haven't noticed any huge difference between the two.

Just put Swype on the EVO, it's crazy how fast you can pick it up and type faster...

I'm definitely not a power user, but by the time I plugged in my phone last night I was still at 60% battery.
