The Eris is underpowered but it still isn't that bad of a phone for the price. If you don't plan on loading it down it should be fine. The Incredible is just an Eris on steroids.

I dont think the Eris is underpowered at all. With the latest SenseUI installed it is amazingly fast, faster navigating through menus than my OC'd Moto Droid.

Yeah, the Eris is okay if you're not really going to play around much but if you want a bunch of apps, speed, plan to multi-task a lot, etc. then it's not the right phone. I'm happiER with mine since 2.1 but I'm definitely watching new phones coming out. For me, I have my laptop & iPad if I want to play so it's not that important to me with the phone. The Eris is just too underpowered for me to be completely satisfied though. I still hate the "phone" part of it. It shouldn't take 10-15 seconds just to get a damn speed dial number dialed.

Yeah, it's called the Eris GT for a reason.

Cost to keep the TP2 for 2 years: $1596.72
Cost to own the new evo (including phone): $1947.72
$1932.72 + $15.00 (189.99[Evo]-175[TP2 sale])

$351 - Cost to own Evo for 2 years.

--
I tried copying over my spreadsheet, but it's way too late to be double checking figures. Sprint site is down and I don't know if the discount is applied before taxes, if the surcharges changed or anything. I keep coming up with about 80/month with 23% so I'm just going to use that for now. I sold my TP2 for 175 and I'll be paying 189.99 for the Evo. 450 AT will work out with anymobile, so I won't be paying that much more.

The Evo upcharges ($10 buyup and $30 hotspot fee) won't receive corp discounts. And the corp discounts are taken out before tax, tax adding about 13%.

Yes, that's it. I'm retarded and have difficulty remembering how to hit the green button followed by one of the contacts.... You have an OC'd Droid that's slower than an Eris and you're saying something is wrong with MY phone? Yeah, I'm sure it's just me....

SenseUI is smoother in general than stock android. Either way the Eris is at a disadvantage hardware-wise when compared to the Droid or Incredible. And the Eris is pretty close to being EOL.

ha, and apparently Verizon pulled an apple with the Shadow. Someone supposedly found it in a verizon gym.

Yes, I am. I know 3 people who have traded in their Moto Droids for a Droid Eris, and are completely happy with their trade. Guess it could be the kind of apps you are wanting to run in the Eris, not sure

So I'm thinking of switching to Verizon and getting an Incredible, any advice?

Right now I'm on my parent's AT&T family plan and they're not on a contract. (Getting tired of the Razr I've had for 4 years...)

Any tips? I heard it was a good idea to wait until the end of the month, so I'm thinking some time this week I'd go to the Verizon store and tell them what I want.

I'm probably going to go for a data plan with the smallest texting package (that isn't 0 texts).

How much trouble is it to port your number over?

Depending on where you are, you might need to wait a little longer.. the Incredible is back-ordered a couple weeks here, but I'm not sure about where you are.

I'm in Fredericksburg, VA. No idea what the availability is here, all I know is that they had a demo unit at the store I was at last week.

Considering I've been using the same mediocre phone for 4 years I won't have a problem waiting a bit longer.

Porting your phone number over is easy, just tell them you want to do it, in most stores they pretty much just assume you want to, shouldn't be a cost.

$5 for 250 texts i think is the cheapest text package, $30 for unlimited data

Get the Incredible if you can.

Benchmark comparison between the Droid with 2.1, Evo 4G with 2.1/SenseUI and the NexusOne running Froyo. I get just over 6 using Linpack on the Droid running SenseUI and OC'd to 750MHz. Still way under the almost 40 that froyo was getting.

I still can't believe people use these things. It takes about 5x longer to get out your phone and use an app to calculate a tip than to do it manually.

Anyway, I do appreciate the list of suggested apps since I'm just waiting until this summer to upgrade to an Android phone.

How easy is it to switch texting plans?

I really don't text very much now, but I could see myself using it more if it's easier.

I figured I'd start with the 250/month plan and save $15/month and upgrade later if I find myself texting that much.

Can't believe you guys are calling out my recommendation about tips... I even pointed out its a very easy task already..... I use it a lot in groups and sometimes when I want to do more that 15, but less than 20... because that is not easier than pushing a few buttons on my phone.

My buddy always uses a tip calculator but never leaves obscure tips. It takes really horrible service for me to leave a bad tip so usually I either halve the bill twice or I use the 20% trick. I can't really think of a situation where I'm leaving 18% but I'll reach for the calculator when I'm too drunk to crunch numbers or feeling especially lazy.

Trying to decide which way to go. New at 2 K comes available in next month or so with Verizon. Heavily leaning twds the Incredible. Currently using BB Curve 8330. I have had no major issues with it, but looking to upgrade.

My GF has Droid and loves it, but she is not to tech savy or into the apps as I would be.

My problem is I have no idea of the "tech" language and want to make sure I get the best phone for multi-tasking, speedy and smooth browser, and easy email/message pull-up/storage/response.

I am also addicted to BB messenger...I am sure there has to be a app to add that to the android?

BBM is a blackberry thing so I doubt you'll ever see it on android. Any of the Droid phones are a step up from the 8330. The webkit browser is top notch and leagues ahead of anything RIM offers. You'd need to wait til RIM releases an OS 6.0 device to get a similar experience.

Multitasking is easy and can be done by holding the home button and switching to one of your 6 most recent apps used (Froyo will list 8 most recent apps). Apps are generally put into a suspended state while you run another one unless it's running as a service in the background so if you're playing a game and pause it to do something else, it'll get closed if you open more than 6 (8 on froyo) apps before going back.

Gmail integration is great but still has a few quirks (downloading attachments, etc). SenseUI adds more Exchange features like allowing security policies but Touchdown for Exchange is a must have for anyone wanting flawless exchange support. For text messaging, Handcent is a pretty good alternative to the stock messaging app and it's free.

wasn't really "calling you out" but even what you described is easier to do in 5 seconds in your head vs pulling out a phone unless you want to leave an *exact* tip at some number in between 15% and 20% for some reason.

I mean no big deal to me if someone uses a tip calculator, but I just can't think of a time someone could would need to use one.

seriously, simple math in your head can get you 10/15/20% for tip, calculating 18% is only saving/costing $2-3 on a $100 bill, how often do you need to do that? and why wouldn't the default calculator do that for you? and why would you care about $2-3 on a $100 bill?

just face it, it's an app for people bad at math.

or convenience. Clearly a personal choice. When I want to split up a bill its tremendously easier. For those who agree, the app I mentioned is one of the better. To those who think doing it in their head, dont like exact numbers, or whatever.... do not use this app.

What app are you guys using for screen shots? I use the computer but would like to put up a pic of my current setup.

Which reminds me:

Launcer Pro - GREAT launcher (functions and FAST). Will post a pic if someone knows a good app to try.

I usually just double the tax and round up but I can see the convenience of using some sort of calculator. Not to mention I have a knack for making math errors.

If you're rooted, you can use drocap2 in the market.
