mine will stay sort of off if I tell it to when it's charging off the wall and from my computer. it'll come up with a screen showing a %charged and have a little battery display thing, but otherwise it's off.

why not? you think the screen staying on when charging is going to lead to widespread catastrophic screen failures across the world?

i guess it could have a toll on the long term screen health, but I'd imagine that thing was made so that it'd still take a few years before it happened and by then you'd be in the market for another phone (if not 2 more phones)

There's an option in Settings, Applications, Development to keep the screen on when charging. And at least for the droid, you can hold the power button and hit power off while it's plugged in and it'll turn the phone off.

On the droid, when charging:
1) Press the power button once, the screen turns off, phone stays on
2) Press & hold the power button, the options come up to reboot, airplane mode, or power off the phone.
3) In a dock situation there's an icon in the upper right that allows you to dim the screen, again, just a simple press of the power button turns the screen off.

so has anyone been able to get anything resembling a full day of use out of a fully charged Evo 4G?

I took mine off the charger at 8:15am, and it was already down nearly 20% by 10am, and that's with the 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS toggled off. Here it is 5 hours later and I'm down to 50% left (again with all those radios turned off), and I haven't used the phone all day except about 30 minutes of Slacker listening.

is this typical of what everyone else is seeing?

any chance 2.2 will help?

i mean i know it's not the hugest deal in the world because you can stash chargers everywhere, but i'm sure there will be some situations where it will hurt...

Have you gone into Settings, About Phone, Battery Use to see what is taking the most battery?

HTC Aria for AT&T hands-on. Looks like they have sideloading of non-market apps blocked on it too.

sweet i didn't know that was there.

cell standby - 30%
phone idle - 27%
android system - 23%
display - 8%
android.process.acore - 4%
slacker - 4% (wonder if that accounts for power required to stream audio, or just to run the program)
android live wall papers - 3%

Are you in a poor signal area? Select cell standby to see how long it's been without signal. If the device switches between 3G and 1x a lot, that could have an effect on the battery life. Wifi use and standby generally requires less power than using 3G so if you have access to wifi, you can try using that during the day.

^^ turn off all unnecessary syncing as well including stocks and weather. You can also manually push sync instead of letting it automatically sync. Reduce your screen timeout to 30 seconds. I managed to get about 36 hours out of my phone while making a couple of calls, sending about 40-50 texts, checking webpages throughout the day, and syncing gmail when necessary.

^ I found that Wifi actually drains the battery faster than 3g.

My phone has been unplugged for 6h 51m 20s and i have 87% battery left.

5h52m since unplugged.
38% Cell standby
36% Phone idle
12% Android System
8% Voice calls
4% Display
2% Dialer

I don't have a battery % widget but it looks like I still have 80% left or more.

hmm...maybe the evo just has high cell standby and phone idle. And you can hit status instead of Battery under About and get how much battery you have left if you don't have a battery widget.

Droid- 90% battery left after 3hrs of light usage with all syncing on and minimal brightness

Display 17%
Voice Calls 17%
Phone Idle 15%
Android System 14%
Cell Standby 12%
Android OS 9%
Wifi 4%
Dolphin Web Browser 3%
Market 3%
Beautiful Widgets 2%
Gapps 2%

2% without signal

it seems like it might be switching between 3G and 1x a lot...(eg 3g is on sometimes, and it's off other times). how can i 'fix' this so i can take it out of the equation if that's not it? turn off 3G?

yeah, there should be an HTC widget for SenseUI that allows you to turn off your data connection all together. That's what I had to do when I was running the ported Desire rom on my droid in order to make/receive phone calls. You won't be receiving data unless you connect to wifi though. I suppose you could just turn data back on when you needed to use it. Apparently you can go into Settings, System Update, Update PRL to update your roaming list and that could possibly help maintain signal better.

Rumored release date of July 19th on the Droid Xtreme

"Breaking: Droid X Launching On Verizon July 19th

Usually our breaking news has to do with pictures or videos of new devices and their specs, but today, we’re going straight off of Verizon word. There has been a ton of speculation surrounding the release of the Droid X and Droid 2 by Motorola and we finally have a date for the release of at least one of them from multiple sources.
Over the last couple of days, Verizon stores were told to place t-shirt orders (like during the Droid Incredible launch) and prepare for an early opening with full staff on July 19th for the Droid X with new merchandising taking over store windows on the 18th.
The official announcement will be made by Verizon next week. (About time right?)
Start saving people, you have 34 days to find an extra lump of cash."

^I'm thinking about joining the 21st century and making the switch from a plain jane flip phone to the Incredible. I wonder if I should hold off until next week to see what that hoopla is all about? My contract is up and I'm due for a upgraded phone, so now seems like as good a time as any. In fact I was thinking about trying to pick one up tonight if Best Buy has them in stock.

If the size isn't an issue, definitely wait to see what comes out of the announcement next week. The Droid X is said to have an omap clocked to 1Ghz which is faster than a snapdragon at the same speed and the smaller architecture may offer improved battery life.

If you have any computer skills at all that's not a big problem as they're not going to block installing them via ADB. I wonder if they blocked all the traditional ways to root like they did on the backflip.

Anyone have the latest .apk for swype on 320x480 screens?

Looks like AT&T will get the Samsung Galaxy. This means a legitimate android will be on AT&T's network

Works fine for me on Evo and Dolphin HD.

http://bri4n.com/Swype-Installer.apk

This is the file that you download from the email, then you login through their beta portal and they push you the real apk. Maybe that will work for you.

Has anyone calculated what the new Sprint Evo costs over the first year of ownership? $199 up front + plan upgrade to everything data $20/month + $9.99/month surcharge. Something like $560 for the first year, then $360 each year after. I'm going to stay with my older cheaper sprint unlimited data plan and my Touch Pro.

If I upgraded it would cost me the $199 up front and $10 increase from my current unlimited plan of $69.99.

So $320 the first year, and then $120 more per year after that for the 4G piece. Not really that big of a deal, at least for me.

I tried copying over my spreadsheet, but it's way too late to be double checking figures. Sprint site is down and I don't know if the discount is applied before taxes, if the surcharges changed or anything. I keep coming up with about 80/month with 23% so I'm just going to use that for now. I sold my TP2 for 175 and I'll be paying 189.99 for the Evo. 450 AT will work out with anymobile, so I won't be paying that much more.
"

I actually ended up converting to a EDFAM 1200 and have a 25% discount. I expect to pay around 60 a month.

So, for those of you that own Android devices (Droids in particular), do you ever notice your phone sometimes misreporting that the battery is about to die? This happens to my Droid about once every three weeks or so. A reboot fixes it without issue, but it's been a problem ever since I got the thing in November, even through the 2.1 update.

Basically you would just chat with eCare and tell them that you heard you're entitled to a discount for being affiliated with NCSU. If you have your unity email still, I would bet once you give them that it wouldn't be hard at all to get the 23% for employees instead. Also USAA member discounts are supposed to be 5% and they usually give you the 23% as well. TWC/Cox enterprises has a fairly open Friends and Family thing where you can get 25%. Just google a bit.

i tried to put the new swype on my phone via that installer, but of course it doesn't download the .apk for the actual swype anywhere i can find on my phone so I can't copy it to my computer to use adb to get around the non-market app BS.

so I have to use a color modded one

Well will you look at that. The Samsung Captivate -- aka the Galaxy S -- just popped up on AT&T's website. The Captivate will be the third Android phone on AT&T -- behind the Backflip and Aria. Keep your fingers crossed that non-market apps aren't excluded, though we're not going to bet the farm on that.

Want full specs? Here you go:

4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen.
1GHz Coretex A8 processor (which they're calling the "1GHz Hummingbird Application Processor").
Samsung Social Hub (as seen in the CTIA presentation)
5MP camera with autofocus and 720p video recording.
3.5mm headphone jack.
802.11 b/g/n WiFi.
Quadband EDGE, tri-band 3G.
Bluetooth 3.0.
