^yeah match was mostly out of boredom and vanity for me too. made a profile, a legit one, just to see if it got a reaction or if there was actually anyone decent out there. a lot of it was, i want chicks to message me and then i'm not gonna do shit back. match was much more tame and full of fatties than what I hear about plentyofish and the others.

pretty much sums up my view on it as well. actually got some decently looking girls wink or message me but the whole thing just feels forced and unnatural.

I'm in an area that is the exact opposite of a large metropolitan area and back when I was doing the online dating thing I had no trouble finding cute girls. Sometimes I had to drive an hour to a neighboring city or something but in most cases it was definitely worth it.

Discussions about online dating online have to be the very pinnacle of cynicism about life and the world, but reading this thread is fantastic. People who use TWW are a little more emotionally robust that the general population or internet, probably because so many users have already dealt with the cold realities of getting a technical degree from NC State.

OKTrends is really cool and I wish they had kept it up (they got bought out). I've discovered so many really bizarre and eye opening things. Internet dating today is completely different from a few years ago. Probably something about the social media revolution changed how people think about this. It's only weird if only weird people use it... so 99.9% of all arguments against it are pretty much mute.

The thing about OKCupid, however, is that it finds people closest to yourself. Unlike sites like Match.com it's not trying to convince people to use it based on a proprietary algorithm that matches up people most likely to get along. No, it matches up people most similar and admits it's not as complicated as the other sites.... but it's transparent.

okcupid has been pretty representative of my real life judging by the people who have contacted me...

it's only fat, ugly and/or old dudes who message me...

or if it's a good looking guy he's messaging me to ask me to hook him up with "one of the hot girls" in my pictures since at one time all my pictures are were of me with various friends...

this is pretty much how real life goes for me as well...it's also why i'm single...and why i never reply to messages on okcupid

From what I've seen, okcupid has far fewer attractive chicks, which is simply a function of being a much larger site. You can also filter out based on body size on match for free. Okcupid has a better interface, fwiw

You have to send out at least 5 messages a day if you're a guy and of those, maybe 1 in 15 will reply. Although it probably isn't a problem for users of TWW but correct grammar and spelling are absolutely imperative... most guys on these dating sites send messages like "hey how u doin u lok fine gurl want 2 hang out?"

I agree with Wraith. Just because you are a male using a dating site does not excuse you from making the first move. You will have girls who might initiate contact first but you're not going to get very far if you wait for everyone to come to you. Man up and start searching.

Yeah I think that's the case, especially on free site which of course let the riff-raff in. One thing I have found is that typing a message necessarily means that you can't use tone of voice or body language like normal in-person interaction. That makes it harder to convey humor and easy for what you say to be misinterpreted. Very straightforward approaches seem to work best. I tend to ask about some detail in their profile, such as places they have visited or some hobby. That's a safe way to come across as a non-creeper.

I don't really email first on Match. I have gotten plenty of dates that way, but nothing that has worked out past 2-3 dates. I guess I could make time to search and email a shit ton of girls a day, but I really don't want to use my free time that way truth be told, especially while I'm having relative success just responding.

nobody I'd date has messaged me on match (all fatties and gingers) and out of the 10 or so girls I found attractive, none of them replied. Just joined okcupid after reading this thread but I really haven't seen a single attractive person except this girl I know from HS who has a boyfriend (I was amazed she would even be on a dating site, she's gorgeous)

I'd bet that the hot girls on match.com get TONS of messages/winks/interested-in's a day.
