Your infallible statistics suggest Kris Humphries is a better player than Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant, among others. Sounds legit.

I guess I'm missing your point?

Durant and Rose didn't produce more wins than Humphries last year. That's what the statistics suggest.

*Durant was certainly better than Humphries this year, but let's not confuse anyone. Humphries is a great player. He would have gotten a big deal this offseason if not for all the drama surrounding him. He'll get paid this offseason.

Superstar players on teams with multiple other great players aren't individually responsible for as many wins as very good players on shitty teams? Sounds like the best way to judge the best basketball players.

Agreed, they've done a great job separating the wins and assigning them to each individual player based on his contribution. No one else's research can really touch it.

^ I would definitely have to take issue with you considering Durant/Rose to be "superstars" last season though.

Technically they use the .30 or greater WP/48 to identify a superstar.

.20 is considered a star.

.10 is average (based on the mean, the median is a bit lower i believe because the stars tend to skew the data)

If you were to have a lineup that averaged .10 WP/48 then you'd go exactly .500 because .1*5 = .50 Wins per game.

So if you have a lineup full of .20's then hypothetically you'd go 82-0 because .20 * 5 = 1 win per game.

Now obviously, like any sampling data you encouter problems when you extrapolate the data too far. You might not go 82-0 with a roster full of .20's but you'd certainly be the best team in the NBA that year.

That's why OKC has such a great shot because they can throw a roster with three ~.25 guys out there at once (Harden, Durant, and Ibaka). All they need is solid contributions out of Westbrook/Sefolosha/Collison (and SOMETHING out of perkins) and they're a nightmare to matchup with.

I don't have that data unfortunately but I highly doubt that anyone was ranked higher than Lebron from other countries.

Having other talented players around you does not effect your WP/48 very much at all.

There is SOME loss of rebounding if you play with a guy like Dennis Rodman or Kevin Love but the effects have been studied and the effect surprisingly was minimal. IIRC, they've controlled for that slight effect in the formula since it was discovered a few years ago. The difference was so minimal that they barely bother discussing it.

Look at Gasol and Bynum. Their WP/48 has actually dropped since Kobe has been out. I'll post that article.

"It just so happens that we have a very interesting experiment going on right now.

From March 23 to April 7, the Lakers used a starting lineup of Sessions-Bryant-World Peace-Gasol-Bynum. They went 6-3. Thanks to the handy-dandy “Game Splits” feature of NerdNumbers.com, we can check out how the Lakers were winning:

Los Angeles Lakers from March 23rd to April 7th 2012
PLAYER POS G MP WP48 WP
Ramon Sessions 1.1 10 329.9 0.193 1.33
Pau Gasol 4.3 10 372.9 0.113 0.87
Metta W.Peace 3.0 10 303.9 0.114 0.72
Matt Barnes 2.7 10 267.5 0.095 0.53
Andrew Bynum 5.0 9 294.6 0.065 0.40
Josh McRoberts 4.1 10 192.7 0.077 0.31
Kobe Bryant 2.0 9 337.3 0.007 0.05
A Goudelock 1.5 4 1.5 -0.155 -0.00
Darius Morris 1.0 4 1.5 -0.546 -0.02
Troy Murphy 4.5 9 85.5 -0.015 -0.03
Devin Ebanks 2.0 4 32.2 -0.064 -0.04
Steve Blake 1.0 10 180.4 -0.011 -0.04
Starting April 8, Kobe Bryant started sitting out games. If you asked me on April 8 how things might go without Bryant, I would have theorized that Gasol and Bynum would get more touches and play better. Let’s see what happened.

Los Angeles Lakers from April 8th to April 18th 2012
PLAYER POS G MP WP48 WP
Matt Barnes 2.4 6 164.4 0.501 1.72
Metta W.Peace 3.0 6 223.4 0.147 0.69
Pau Gasol 4.2 6 228.6 0.090 0.43
Ramon Sessions 1.3 6 189.6 0.104 0.41
Andrew Bynum 5.0 6 216.0 0.079 0.36
Josh McRoberts 4.0 6 87.2 0.091 0.17
Devin Ebanks 2.0 6 145.0 0.028 0.08
Jordan Hill 4.5 3 6.2 0.609 0.08
Steve Blake 1.0 6 145.0 -0.002 -0.01
A Goudelock 1.5 3 4.3 -0.240 -0.02
Troy Murphy 4.5 6 47.3 -0.117 -0.11
Darius Morris 1.0 4 8.0 -1.166 -0.19

As always, small sample sizes demand that we take the results with a grain of salt. But, some interesting things stand out:

1) Gasol, Bynum, and Sessions have played notably worse without Bryant in the lineup. (Editor’s Note: I included the 4-18 Lakers game against the Golden State Tanks. We’ll notice that in a small sample size one game brought Bynum up to his Kobe levels, which as of late have been bad.)

2) World Peace and Barnes played notably better without Bryant in the lineup. In fact, Barnes went from average to LeBron over the course of those 6 games, while World Peace has been an above average player while starting with Sessions (after being below average—WP48 0.040—in his first 46 games)

3) Because Bryant wasn’t playing well before his injury, they’ve actually gotten more production out of Ebanks than Bryant

Prior to this year, Bryant has always been an above-average to great player (though not a superstar certainly). This year, he has been well below average. Logically, the Lakers would be far better off if Bryant shot less and deferred to Bynum and Gasol. Yet without Bryant in the lineup, the performance of the Lakers twin towers of Gasol and Bynum has been truly abysmal (though thanks to the power of raw numbers, most NBA commentators have praised Gasol and Bynum for “stepping up” in the absence of the team’s “superstar”). Only an insanely hot stretch by Matt Barnes has kept the Bryant-less Lakers afloat. It may be that Kobe’s (somewhat irrational) reputation with his fellow NBA players enables him to serve as a powerful decoy to free up his big men, even when his poor shooting has made him a below-average player. That being said, I suspect that the decoy effect would still have its positive effects even if he cut down his league-leading usage rate.

Perhaps Kobe’s injury is a blessing in disguise for the Lakers. If Kobe returns and moderates his shooting, but still serves his role as “closer” (read: decoy), the Lakers can play at maximum efficiency and do more damage in the playoffs, resulting in Matt Barnes hoisting the trophy for his Finals MVP award — joking … sort of.

^^^^ That would depend on who the other players available were for the pickup game I guess.

WP/48 is controlled for positions. So if you created a league that had literally hundreds of solid big men (think Garnett) and only 2 great PG's (think Nash and Rondo) and a one good PG (think Rose) then Rose would be very valuable.

However, if we create a league very similar to the NBA that has only a few great big men (think Tyson Chandler and Dwight Howard) along with a few good ones (think Marcin Gortat) and a nearly infinite supply of talented guards (think Jarrett Jack, Ty Lawson, Kyrie Irving, John Wall, etc) then Rose simply isn't all that valuable.

If everyone has a good PG then Rose isn't nearly as big of an advantage as you might think.

They've named the phenomenon "The Short Supply of Tall People" and there has been extensive research done on the topic.

It takes a special kind of hubris to think you could possibly no more than someone about a topic that they have written books, published research, etc on when they have a PHD and teach at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

I highly doubt you've watch Kris Humphries play more than 5 times and when you were watching I'm guessing you used the "eye test" rather than proven scientific methods.

^^ I do watch games as I find them entertaining. But watching the games to assess the quality of each individual player is just crazy. How could you possibly process everything that is going on when there are ten people out there at once. Do you give equal weight mentally to a rebound in traffic by Greg Stiemsma as you do a thundering breakaway dunk by Russell Westbrook?

Do you award points to Tyson Chandler for his low usage rate and low turnovers at the end of the game or do you gradually make a mental note after each possession?

ha typo. Doesn't change anything.

Arguing about who is the best player based on how many hits they get on their Youtube fanboy videos just seems a little sophomoric.

But don't let me ruin your childish endeavors. Just because I don't base our opinions on what Stephen A. Smith says doesn't mean I'm the one who is wrong.

Nothing I said contradicts this so I'm not sure where you are even going with it. And I'm not sure if they've both been better than him for the past 5 years, I'd have to look into that. The past few years, sure. And of course this year. Kobe is a has been this season. High turnovers, poor shooting, the whole lot.

But I'm glad people still think he's a star. It's people like that who made Dallas a 2:1 underdog against the Lakers last year and keep NBA profitable for me.

according to your interpretation of WP48 this season, Matt Bonner is a better basketball player than Dirk Nowitzki, Deron Williams and Kobe Bryant

numbers don't lie, Bonner is better than Kobe, Dirk and D-Will...even though he's a 1-tool player, I'll trust mathematics over my eyeballs

I'm not even sure how the Kobe facade still exists. In his prime the Lakers were below .500 cumulatively for three seasons after Shaq left. Lebron could pick up four guys off the waiver wire and go .500 and Kobe couldn't do it with Odom, Caron, etc.

For giggles here are his numbers:
Quote :
"
00-01 .151
01-02 .178
02-03 .199
03-04 .207
04-05 .152
05-06 .146
06-07 .185
07-08 .206
08-09 .184
09-10 .137
10-11 .132
11-12 .051"

As you can see he's been remarkably consistent throughout the past 12 seasons and he's aged uncommonly well (especially for a SG where we normally see much earlier declines) but this is the season where he officially lost it. Maybe it was the condensed schedule, the injuries, etc. But whatever the reason he's lost it this season. Maybe it comes back next year but it's nearly a sure thing he never plays at the .20 level again (unless he can recreate his game as a passer instead of a shooter) and he may not reach the .10 level either.

^^^ Can't tell if you're being serious. Of course he is... those guys have been unproductive this year.

Deron is .061 he's been awful. He was a Zero up until he hit his hot streak like two months ago. He's the most risky free agent because someone might give him the Max based on prior remarkable seasons, but they've got to be scared after the way he played this year.

Dirk is .073 and spent sometime at the Zero level (he's been playing much better as of late). He's probably the most overrated player in the league right now because some people still consider him a star. Cuban will probably stay loyal to him (and he sells tickets) but you know deep down he wants to move him because he wants to keep Dallas a winner.

Kobe I've discussed quite a bit already.

Bonner is .123 so the numbers suggest he's barely above average. He plays a decent chunk of minutes for a team that might get the #1 seed in the West. I'm not sure why you think he stinks, but the data suggests that he doesn't.

Is Matt Bonner a better basketball player than either Kobe Bryant, Deron Williams or Dirk Nowitzki? I' would hope and expect you would say yes since you believe in scientific studies.

Also, if Dirk is the most overrated player in the league, how come he has infinitely more NBA championships than Lebron, Rose, Durant, Kris Humphrise, Nene, etc?

Listen, if you want to read the FAQ all of your uninformed opinions have already been explained away. I realize this website isn't exactly swimming with scholars so it'll be tough to get anyone to understand basic statistics analysis but the language has been dumbed down enough for the general public to understand.

You're insistence on turning a blind eye to research even in the face of being continually wrong reminds me of one of my favorite Orwell quotes, "People can foresee the future only when it coincides with their own wishes, and the most grossly obvious facts can be ignored when they are unwelcome.”

http://wagesofwins.com/faq/

They even introduce the article with a dummy argument that is essentially your argument.

Quote :
"Why are the player evaluations from Wins Produced so different from what people “know”? Don’t you ever watch a basketball game? Are you telling me player X is better than player Y? Are you serious? "

^ Dirk was on a loaded team. Now that he doesn't have Tyson Chandler the Mavs don't have a prayer. Your teammates matter. Even King Lebron James only puts up around .300 WP/48.

You need to be around the .700 level collectively to win a title. Which means he needs help. Not exactly a stunning revelation. Jordan doesn't win titles without Pippen and Grant/Rodman either.

He produced more wins than they did of course.

He plays a different position so I wouldn't argue that he's more "talented" but when adjusted for position he is certainly more valuable than them this season. Assuming we are using a definition of "valuable" that accounts for how many wins the player produces (not ticket sales, jerseys, highlights, or points per game).

While wp/48 does take defense into account it does not account for all defensive measures (which have been proven to be more of a team statistic anyway than an individual one) so I will admit sometimes guys who are known to be extremely bad defenders (think Troy Murphy, David Lee, Matt Bonner) can be slightly overrated by the metric though.

it's not a simple question and I answered it in my last post.

There are several 6'0 basketball players in the world who are better than Josh Powell. But the difference is that tall people are in short supply.

So a 7'0 stiff can make a roster while a 6'0 playground legend may not. IS Bonner more talented than Deron? No, of course not. But is he more valuable this season? Obviously.

Deron Williams was barely better than a replacement level player this year so absolutely I'd rather have Matt Bonner this year than Deron. Anyone can get a PG that puts up a .06 wp/48.

Even DJ Augustin was a .049 wp/48 this year. It's much more difficult to land an above average big man that comes off the bench.

Now maybe Deron was just sulking and he returns to form next year after he signs a big deal. But obviously other GM's are going to be nervous giving him a max deal coming off a terrible season.

40% FG, 33% 3's, 4.0 turnovers??? What am I missing here? Are you trying to say Deron Williams was a good player this year? You realize the Nets suck and the Spurs are #1 in the West, right?

^^^ The problem stems from this....

When a guy has a big game and scores 40 points on 16/28 FG everyone goes crazy because he "won" the game for his team.

But the next night when he scores 22 points on 8/27 FG they don't obsess about how he "lost" the game for his team.

When a guy consistently grabs 12-13 rebounds a game, 1.5 steals, and doesn't turn the ball over and helps his team win it goes virtually unnoticed.

Yes, Carmelo could be a great player. He obviously has the skillset to be great. Unfortunately, he's never proven over the course of an entire season that he has both the desire and ability to be a great player. That's all I'm saying. It hasn't happened yet. Maybe it will one day, who knows?!

I already knew this to be correct and after he went to NYK and proved it again most everyone began to agree. Remember the knicks tear when he was hurt??

Inefficient scorers simply are not valuable in the NBA. Now in rec league inefficient scorers can be valuable. If you shoot 45% and everyone else shoots 25%, then you are a star. But in the NBA other guys don't shoot 25% (well, unless you field a team of Diop's) therefore inefficient scorers are not valuable, let alone stars.

Carmelo has one of the worst shot selections in the NBA, as documented in this article:

Quote :
"No one will disagree that LeBron James is a better player than Carmelo Anthony. However, people certainly seem to think Carmelo Anthony is at least in the mix for top small forward in the league. In fact just two seasons ago when LeBron James took home the MVP award and was named to the All-NBA first team Carmelo Anthony finished sixth in MVP voting and was placed on the All-NBA second team.

Every time we compare Melo to LeBron, Melo pretty much comes up short on every count. The only place Melo comes out ahead is in offensive rebounds per game. While these are valuable they don’t come close to making up for the rest of the game differences between the players.

The one area that Melo seems to get a lot of credit is scoring. He’s called a “pure scorer” that can “score at will” and is “the best offensive player in the game”. It’s very odd for all of this praise to get heaped on Melo when his shooting numbers are not anywhere near LeBron’s. However, the Basketball Reference Play Index Plus gives us an ability to check out what people are talking about. Let’s look at LeBron vs. Melo in regards to shooting when we take location into account. I’ll be using 2010 as that is the season where LeBron and Melo were arguably most similar in regards to popular perception.

Shooting Comparison: LeBron vs. Melo 2009-2010
DISTANCE FROM HOOP LEBRON ATTEMPTS LEBRON SHOT % MELO ATTEMPTS MELO SHOT %
Free Throw 773 76.7% 612 83.0%
At Rim 596 73.8% 593 59.2%
3 to 9 feet 151 46.4% 155 32.9%
10-15 feet 101 34.7% 213 44.6%
16-3pt line 454 39.6% 473 40.2%
Behind 3pt 437 34.1% 206 31.6%
When we try and see where Melo outshines LeBron as a scorer we get our answer. From 10 feet to the three point line (midrange jumpers) Melo is a much better shooter. However, from close to the hoop and beyond the arc LeBron is superior. In regards to almost all of their shots they are very close in attempts with one exception. Melo likes taking more shots in the 10 foot to the three point line range. Neither LeBron or Melo is good from this range (Ty at Courtside Analyst has a less than favorable term for these shots). LeBron’s strength comes from the fact that he is very good at easy shots and he takes a lot of them. When given the option of taking a midrange jumper or getting behind the arc, LeBron is much more likely to get behind the arc than Melo. LeBron also gets to the line more often.

All of this boils down to shot selection. LeBron James is better at easier shots and as a result he takes fewer of the hard shots. Melo is better at some of the more difficult shots and is prone to take them. The issue is that the scoreboard doesn’t care! Did LeBron get his two points for an easy jam or by a pull up jumper? Who cares? In complimenting Melo for being a pure scorer what people need to realize is that shot selection is part of being a scorer! Taking bad shots at a better rate than most players may be impressive. However, the NBA is not a game of HORSE. I will conceed that Melo is better at making worse shots than LeBron is. However, I see nothing pure or impressive about a player that chooses to take bad shots."

How did I not hear that Greg Oden got waived.

Quick someone give Jordan a loan so we can throw $50 million at him.

Anyone see Nash's layup over Griffin last night? That was beautiful. I love Steve Nash. Still having a very solid year at the ripe age of 38.

That was beautiful. I really hope they get in over Utah. Spurs or OKC will rape either, but Nash is just such a fucking warrior that you want to see him get a shot.

I wonder where he'll go next year. I can't see him working in Miami. They are making two ball dominators work with Wade and Lebron...but three is pushing it. Chicago obviously does not need him and point guard is the least of Orlando's concerns. He could be a great back-up for Westbrook in OKC, but I don't think they need him either. I really want him to get a title before he retires.

no big surprise that the first game Amare comes back the Knicks start losing again.

3 rebounds from your power forward and you put Carmelo back at SF so he can take bad shots and not rebound either. Maybe one day the knicks will figure it out.

Good lord the spurs look ridiculous tonight. They just destroyed the lakers

LOL at Miami for shutting down Lebron to ensure they get the #2 seed instead of the #1 seed.

They are obviously dodging Boston in the 2nd round. Can't say I blame them with that juicy 2nd round matchup vs Indy instead

Pacers are solid, but I can't recall a weaker 3 seed. If that ends up being the matchup, Miami should be embarrassed if it goes more than 5.

no big surprise that after one game of Amare back getting back in the flow, the Knicks get a road win over a better team

i just worry about them getting significantly worse once Chandler and Lin get back
