I guess I prefer to be more of the 'fighting champion' and to take on ECU than to duck them and argue that we don't want to play them because we lose to them too often and it puts us at a huge disadvantage when we do.

Out of conference games should be scheduled with the intention of at least doing one of these things:

A) Getting a solid win before conference play

B) Raising the programs profile against significant competition

C) Increasing the programs potential recruiting boundaries.

Playing ECU accomplishes non of these things. It's not a guaranteed win, its not a power opponent, and it doesn't expand our recruiting envelope. And we're playing them in Greenville, for fuck's sake. We could offer to play them in Raleigh once every 5 years if we wanted to, and they'd have to take that deal, because they have no bargaining power against us. Scheduling them like we do serves no strategic benefit to the long-term goals of NC State Football, and quite honestly, I think it hurts our programs advancement opportunities by indirectly elevating the profile of an in-state school that actively recruits against us.

I truly wish I could attend this game, but alas I am stuck watching shitty PAC-12 football. Hopefully it is on TV so I may watch. It will be a good game.

^If you lose to ECU, its a solid loss, but if you win...its not a solid win.....???

This game does more for conference prep then the likes of W&M and ODU.

But I regress, majority of this thread will continue to do a UNC on ECU.

A non conference foe, from a Non power 5 conference, is just never gonna be a "rival" in the real sense of the word to most ppl, even when that team beats you on occasion. It's just the truth, no offense meant.

I don't understand why most ppl don't get that. Ecu is an out of conference, non power 5 opponent. Tough to get excited over that, sorry. Not trying to "UNC" them, just telling it like it is.

Ecu has a great football program though, and great med school.

It was proposed, but I don't think that bill ever passed. But regardless of whether or not it passed, we do play them a lot, so it probably had an impact.

I'd happily swap out our occasional matchups vs. ECU with an occasional matchup with Maryland. Their fanbase is horrid, but at least a matchup with them would give us exposure in BigTen country. And a loss to them would revive the tradition of them consistently fucking up our season, which is far more palatable than ECU consistently getting one of our coaches fired.

ECU is not a solid loss. Sorry, any loss to a team outside P5 and outside top 25 is not a solid loss for a power 5 team.

So would just bout every other AAC team with the added benefit (for an away game) of some out of state exposure.

there's no "or" on the depth chart at QB this week...Finley officially listed as the starter.

In the world of digital highlight reels all over the internet, and a bajillion games on tv or streaming every week, is traveling actually grabbing the attention of out-of-state potential players or fans?

No, it's a lose-lose situation. If you lose to ECU, you lost to a mid-major team. If you beat them, meh, so what, you were supposed to beat them.

^i think it might be more of a way to visit local high schools and get recruits to go to the game when they might otherwise not get a chance to go to a state home game. but on the whole, i do also wonder how effective it is.

isn't that the same as playing FCS teams or any other group of 5 team, though? i mean...the only difference is that ECU is gonna get up to play us since it's a regional rivalry and that their fans are gonna be annoying af if they beat us, right?

and tbh, i don't think we're at a level where it's a shock or even some point of embarrassment if we lose to a group of 5 team. that's more of a statement about the state of our program and its history as opposed to the sheer talent/skill disparity between a lower level P5 team and mid to higher level G5 team. we aren't so good that people on a national level really care if we lose to a pretty decent G5 team...because we are just a meh P5 team.

the fact that JaySam got 10 touches is enough for me to be excited about the new offense....he only got 10 or more touches 4 times last year. and never in the blow out OOC wins last year...so he didn't even play a full game and still was getting more touches than most games last year. which was a HUGE complaint from last year.

^ yes, there was a clear emphasis on getting our talented guys the ball more. The play-calling seemed severely questionable last year (ie Grinnage having 25 catches all last season) but if we clean that up a little, I am satisfied with the offense.

On a side note, I think McClendon showed to be the QB with the most upside. I get he made an INT but he's WAY more talented. If we continue to get him in games, he could be in a position to take over by mid-season

^yeah, McClendon definitely has the tools and measureables to be a really good QB. he looked a little shaky in the pocket...just looked uncomfortable. and that probably comes from him pressing too much to prove himself and having very little real game experience (aside from mop up duty). i think you gotta go with Finley right now...he looked poised and did everything asked of him (admittedly, that was mostly a game manager role). i

McClendon is a liability at QB right now. You either have to try and win as many games as you can(Finley) or you have to start building for next year(McClendon). I imagine tanking this year would make DD's seat a little warm(if it's not already).

McClendon has all the tools/talent to be our QB for the next 2 years, but he looks a little lost on the field. I'm not sure if it's lack of experience with the offense, overall lack of confidence, or just forcing too much trying to win the job. I mean I get it, the dude was put in a bad situation, his competitor goes out and scores 2 TDs in 2 drives, so you feel pressure to score a TD and throw a pick instead of taking a FG. But the fact that the coaches didn't put him right back in on the short-field or give him another full series, makes it pretty clear he was behind in practice and the coaches were fairly confident Finley would be the guy.

I imagine McClendon will continue to get chances to become our QB, but I think it's going to take Finley going down or our record being awful for him to do so this season.

I think it will take our offense getting stuffed by real teams in conference play. And i still don't think it will happen. Doeren has hitched his wagon to the Finley train.

I don't understand why people are still so hard on the McClendon wagon.

Dude did an awful job playing outside garbage time in the late fourth. What did he do that made anyone think he was the better qb?

I agree. McLendon looked like he has the better physical tools, but didn't look nearly as comfortable making reads and doing the right thing with the ball like Finley did.

Finley made three or four throws down the field for more than five yards with what appeared to be adequate strength and accuracy.

He also didn't fumble any snaps or throw any interceptions.

[Edited on September 6, 2016 at 12:22 PM. Reason : McClendon was 6 of 9 for 88 yards with an interception with six carries for five yards]

We will easily beat ECU

They have terrible LBs and our O line and D line should dominate.

They have a new coach and new team, just need to get ahead early and let them panic. Full meltdown mode.

LOL. UNC played about as easy of a schedule that a Power 5 school can. We unfortunately are playing an SEC West style schedule. I see maybe 3-4 wins. ODU will keep it close with us next week too. Wake or BC will beat us and probably Syracuse.
