I've seen people mentioning the possibility of trading down and gathering a couple first rounders for #1 overall. Not that I agree with that, I just assume that not everyone will think taking Luck is that black and white. 12/27/2010 5:25:35 PM |

let's make a baseless assumption that Luck stays in school and the Panthers keep the #1 pick
who do you take?
Newton? Mallett? Locker?
and if not a QB, then what position 12/27/2010 5:28:02 PM |

Quote : | "• There has been a ton of hype regarding Arkansas junior QB Ryan Mallett with many analysts calling him a likely first-rounder and possible top-10 pick in '11. Such talk was not based on film study. Draft Dish: Arkansas' Mallett not ready for NFL, should return to school Ryan Mallett is an overrated prospect who should return to Arkansas for his senior season, Russ Lande says.
After breaking down all of Mallett's film, we came away disappointed. His play actually got worse, not better, this season.
After consulting with scouts from several NFL teams, who agreed with our evaluation, Mallett is an overrated prospect who definitely should return to Arkansas for his senior season.
Mallett, (6-6, 238) has excellent height, rare arm strength and flashed good accuracy downfield. However, he still must prove he has the quick mind to succeed in the NFL. He also must accelerate his deliberate delivery to keep defensive backs from breaking so quickly on his passes.
Basically, he throws too many interceptions. We believe a big part of the problem is that he doesn't read coverages well and is slow to react to shifting defensive personnel. When his mechanics are spot on, he can be accurate and lead his receivers as well as any college QB. When under duress, his footwork becomes poor and his passes start flying high, low and wide.
Bottom line: Mallett is not yet an elite QB prospect and he certainly will be disappointed should he enter the '11 draft." |

Yeah, if not Luck (if he stays in school that is), the Panthers should trade the pick. There really isn't anyone else this year worth the money that the #1 pick in the draft demands.

and as to trading down . . . this gets mentioned every year for whichever team has the number one pick, and it never happens, does it? I mean, no other team really wants to trade up to pay a guy more money do they?

You have to think if the Panthers don't think anyone is worth the money for a top draft choice what makes you think anyone else does as well. I personally don't even believe Luck is worth that top pick and feel even if he is available the Panthers should look to trade down. The only difference being they might actually find some takers. 12/29/2010 11:43:46 AM |

In that case I would draft Nick Fairley and hope the new CBA includes some kind of NBA-esque rookie pay scale.

I watch several of his games this season, and he looks amazing. Sucks to be Jimmy Clausen....except that Ivan Maisel is saying it sounds like Luck will go back for his junior/senior year. Maisel is a Stanford grad though, so take it for what it's worth.
If Michigan fires RichRod, we're probably in good shape to get Luck, but it's not like the kid's family needs money or anything. He doesn't have any pressure to leave early. 12/29/2010 12:02:25 PM |

he is assuming Harbaugh would go to Michigan and Luck would enter the draft as opposed to playing for a new coach at Stanford
and even though it seems like every year there is a "best qb prospect in a decade", the praise for Luck does seem to be ridiculously high

Luck should learn from other QB's that went back to school after being a sure top pick.
Look what happened to Leinart and Locker (Locker obviously hasn't been drafted yet but he was pretty much a lock for a top 3 pick last year).
Also if the Panthers take Luck we can refer to our QB's as "Luck and the Irish"

Think our biggest need is WR outside of QB and while I think AJ Green is a solid top 10 WR, no way I'd take them with the #1 overall pick. So I think we either get Luck, trade down, or potentially take Bowers(DE/Clemson) to help with our pass rush to go with Charles Johnson(really had a good second half of the season). 12/29/2010 2:03:08 PM |

it used to be almost impossible to trade out of the 1st pick w/o getting raped...but that may change if there's a wage scale by next draft 12/29/2010 2:27:05 PM |

If you would draft Rivers or Eli Manning with a 1st pick, then drafting Luck is a no brainer. His evaluations are better than either of those guys coming out of college. He is a franchise QB, and as a team without one, the panthers have to pick him.
WR is the second biggest need?? I don't think so. I think the guys the panthers have are good -- they just have had shitty QBs. Bad quarterbacking will kill WR production.
How about pass rusher as the second biggest need?

I'd say WR, because I really think we cut ties with Steve Smith before next season so we'll need a new #1 WR. I like what I saw out of LaFells and Gettis, but add in Green and we have a young WR crew with potential. Not a big fan of Steve Smith for a young QB, he's a "diva" at WR.
Charles Johnson really came on strong the second half of the season, and if Everett Brown ever lives up to potential then we could get a decent pass-rush going.
And like I said, I don't think we draft a WR, I think it's Luck or Bowers but if we stick with Clausen I'd like us to cut ties with Steve Smith via trade and pick up Green. 12/29/2010 8:16:12 PM |

I don't think the panthers are smart enough to not waste their # 1 pick. Jerry richardson would give up a potential franchise qb for bubble gum, a BJ from jake delhomme, and for lunch with the BOA CEO at the skyscraper downtown. 12/31/2010 9:11:23 PM |

I've got a bad feeling about this draft, if luck doesn't come out there are really no other qbs worth picking number one and we'd have to take that clemson guy who is talented but would probably go 5-10 in drafts of other years, plus I think we need a DT more than a DE, oh well at least we won't get stuck with some reggie bush or david carr 12/31/2010 9:41:33 PM |

Probably mentioned somewhere, but the Panthers are supposedly interviewing Ron Rivera, Chargers D coordinator, for head coach. He was also the coordinator of the Bears when they went to the superbowl. Not the most thrilling news, but we could definitely do worse. 1/2/2011 8:24:50 PM |

^^^ Rivera is the man. He took a bunch of nobodies in San Diego and turned them into one of the best defenses in the NFL this year. There is not a single pro-bowler, past or present, on that Chargers defensive roster, but they finished #1 in the NFL in terms of fewest yards given up this season. He is a fiery guy, but not erratic like Singletary, and would make for a very good head coach. Much better than some shitty re-tread like Jim Fassel.
Rivera may also simply be a Rooney-rule candidate. We shall see.
