I’m rolling my eyes at all of it.

Hayes is a freshman that has very much played like a freshman in ACC play. He’s struggled with defensive pressure. That’s kept him out of late game situations, i believe. He’s good and shown promise and has a high ceiling. He also has some improvements to make. Hayes turnover% is 21% overall (and 34.5% in conference play). BB turnover% is not great either but it’s better (13.9% overall and 24% in conference play). There seems to be an assumption that BB is getting 35 mpg by some in our fan base. He’s actually playing 23 mpg. And that includes 2 games where Hayes sat out due to covid. BB is only averaging 20.5 mpg if you throw out the two games where Hayes was out...which doesn’t include the UNC game where Hayes was pretty clearly limited and not 100%.


It’s also completely baseless to speculate that he’s gonna transfer because a senior is starting over him. But I know message boards are the perfect place for baseless speculation. There’s no real reason to think he’ll transfer.

I’m not saying Beverly is a great player. But I also don’t think he’s as terrible as people say. It also seems disingenuous to act like Beverly is eating up tons of minutes when he’s averaging about 20 mpg when the guards are all at full strength. It seems reasonable to assume that as Hayes (and Moore) improve and get more comfortable, their minutes will increase. They clearly have a higher ceiling than Beverly. But it’s a lot to throw true freshman PGs to the wolves. Especially without the luxury of an extended OOC schedule to give them more time to get comfortable.

Btw hayes started Saturday, not Beverly.

And it seems like if Hayes was going to transfer, it would be bc of Shaks minutes as much as anything.


Only semi related but Hayes remind me a little of Lavar Batts, just in the way he runs/moves, both seem like they had l growth spurt and are still getting used to their long legs

Plus he is easily the worst defender in the ACC. He should play 10 minutes a game. Would much rather watch Shak/Cam "Be thrown to the fire" than for BB to suck even more as a senior.

Idk who the worst defender in the conference is. But I’ll go out on a limb and say the league’s worst defender probably doesn’t have a 3.6% steal rate. And I know steals don’t tell the entire story of a defender. But 3.6% is good.

This team clearly isn’t as deep as we hoped. We basically go 8 deep when fully healthy, which has been a rare occurrence this year. Farrar, Gibson, Dowouna, Seabron are just not ACC ready. Maybe that would be better if we had a normal offseason and normal OOC schedule...or maybe not.

Anyway. 71.4% FG, 7/10 on 3s, 10/10 FTs, 10 points off turnovers. Basically a perfect half from FSU. Obviously we’re contributing to their success by being bad.

Keatt’s half court offense is bad. If we aren’t creating turnovers, we can’t score points. It’s insane how bad our guards are at getting the ball down low.

Not only were they taller and more athletic than us but they were incredible at shooting. We didn’t stand a chance. What is our strategy on defense??? We have one guy pressure the ball on the inbounds, they get blown by drawing our other defenders and then FSU kicks to a wide open player on the wing. It looks like we halfway pressure but don’t commit to it. We might as well drop back and pick them up in the halfcourt.

We also beat Carolina (yeah I know they suck this year), which makes any other loss a little more palatable. The blowout last night was bad, Miami loss sucked, but I’m not giving up on everything yet.

This season is partly a referendum on whether DD can take over without Markell running the show, so far returns aren't great. With two frosh PGs, we're going to live or die with Daniels running the offense.

Also was going to be whether DJ and Manny could stay on the floor, their injuries/covid have interrupted that

I have to think that the game would have been different if Manny was available. They were driving to the basket with little to no resistance. How many points in the paint did they have? Of course, they still went 12-18 from 3. Sucks that we really only have one rim protector. I'm NOT saying it would have even been close if we had Manny, but it appears that a lot of our season will depend on whether he can stay healthy and out of foul trouble.

Was last night the first time we really saw Dowuona or Farrar for more than a minute or two? Farrar is a big boy.

Didn’t Keatts come in from UNCW with a reputation for spreading the floor and having good shooters to hit 3’s? I would say we have one consistent outside shooter right now with Thomas Allen. Our offense depends on Daniels driving, Hellems mid range game, and two big men. Seems the opposite of what I thought he would do when hired. Seems like he would have recruited a few more sharpshooters but maybe he has changed his offense.

^^the key word there is "consistent". because based solely off percetanges, we have some good shooters...

shak 31% (not anything to brag about but he's shown he can get hot)
beverly 38.7% (but definitely streaky)

the real glaring thing is DD is taking the most 3s on the team (46 total, 4.6/game) and only shooting 28.3% on 3s.

I don't necessarily think 3pt shooting is the issue except for Daniels. As you pointed out, all of the guards and wings who should be shooting 3s are shooting it acceptably.

For some reason since Keatts has been here, our guards are incapable of drive and kick or running a proper pick and role. We have two good big men who can both scored in the paint and we cannot get them the ball. Maybe it's a talent thing and perhaps that is getting solved with the recent class, or maybe it's a scheme thing, but our half-court offense has been awful under Keatts.

Daniels, who can't drive and kick or run a pick and roll is also the guy shooting so poorly from 3 and isn't great from the free throw line either.

I think it's time to go through the growing pains with shak and hayes and diminish the role of Daniels and BB. I'm not even talking minutes necessarily, but get the ball out of Daniels hands--especially in crunch time.

Refusal to play zone against a team that dominates you inside is insane. They had 13 of their 21 baskets in the first half in the lane.

Seabron, Farrar, Gibson, Ebe not being ACC caliber subs is killer. We can't even play them for a short stint at this point.
