There's also a significant difference between setting up a back-channel go-between (a person that both parties trust, a burner phone, email addresses, etc) and asking the Russians if you can borrow their hyper-secure, non-disclosed phone line IMO.
The latter is clearly an attempt to stay off the intelligence communities' radar. 5/30/2017 9:12:27 AM |

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism
Quote : | "Whataboutism is a propaganda technique first used by the Soviet Union (and later, Russia), in its dealings with the Western world.[1] When Cold War criticisms were levelled at the Soviet Union, the response would be "What about..." followed by the naming of an event in the Western world.[2][3] It represents a case of tu quoque (appeal to hypocrisy),[4] a logical fallacy that attempts to discredit the opponent's position by asserting the opponent's failure to act consistently in accordance with that position, without directly refuting or disproving the opponent's initial argument.
The term describing the technique was coined in 2008 by Edward Lucas in an article for The Economist. Lucas said that this tactic is observed in the politics of modern Russia, along with this being evidence of a resurgence of Cold War and Soviet-era mentality within Russia's leadership.[2]" |

Nunes actually subpoenaed about the unmasking unilaterally from what I've read.

Who is he accountable to? Paul Ryan? Lol. And technically it was a temporary, voluntary recusal. In other words until his Orange Jesus needed him again.
Anyway, I think the argument would be that he the unmasking it at most tangential to the Russia investigation. 6/1/2017 9:35:59 AM |

He is still part of the intel committee itself, I believe, which would allow him to do that. I'm fine with them looking into whether anything inappropriate happened. But in my opinion, he's simply doing it at the direction of Trump in order to try and obtain more things to delay and distract from the real investigations. I find it highly unlikely (though not impossible) that any one of the 19 or so people who can actually request unmasking did anything illegal or immoral.

Putin more or less admitted Russia(ns) did the hacking this morning. Of course said it wasn't the state but rather "patriotic individuals or groups" in Russia. This still won't be enough for many on the left and right to accept it but it's as close to a real admission as he will ever go.

Quote : | "But the intelligence community's policies on minimization are not absolute, and there are several exceptions. The National Security Agency, for example, will contain the names of U.S. persons in intelligence reports when:
? The information is available publicly, meaning "information that a member of the public could obtain on request, by research in public sources, or by casual observation."
? "The identity of the United States person is necessary to understand foreign intelligence information or assess its importance, e.g., the identity of a senior official in the executive branch."
? The intelligence indicates that the U.S. person may be "an agent of a foreign power."" |
Quote : | ""So when that occurred, what I would do, or what any official would do, is to ask their briefer whether the intelligence community would go through its process — and there's a long-standing, established process — to decide whether that information as to who the identity of the U.S. person was could be provided to me. So they'd take that question back, they'd put it through a process, and the intelligence community made the determination as to whether or not the identity of that American individual could be provided to me."" |

^far too early to tell that. these investigations take quite a long time. which is why the left needs to stop calling for impeachment right now and the right needs to stop saying the thing should be shut down because there is no evidence. gotta let these things work through the system.
as for the press, they're doing their jobs by reporting news which allows us to keep pressure up on our representatives to keep these investigations from being shut down. 6/2/2017 12:24:54 PM |

it seems like there were some bills recently to standardize voting across the nation, things like requiring a paper trail, etc. but they never seem to go anywhere. Even after Bush/Gore, how? Seems like there are some pretty basic steps that could move us in the right direction.
If there are two things I hope become of all this it's serious discussions about vote integrity and campaign finance reform. 6/5/2017 7:33:57 PM |

Read that the Trump teams plan is to really go after him and his character. I just don't see how assailing a career guy of impeccable character is going to work.
** two big takeaways. 1) Trump personally, at that time, was not subject to the Russia collusion investigation; 2) he's a creep that is dangerously close to obstruction of justice.
