My interpretation is directed punishments like scholarship losses are sport specific. But probation is departmen wide. I could be wrong, though. Seems to be a common question.

Even if probation only applies to football, common sense would tell you to come down harder since you now have two fucked up programs. The example wasn't made the first time, it seems.

^ yep that's what would happen with a normal school. This is UNC, the NCAA's money maker, so it'll be different

The things, it would be prudent for them to come down hard. Otherwise other schools will try this crap, and sue the shit out of the NCAA when they get stronger sanctions. People are already pissed off at the NCAA for ineptitude, and handling this incorrectly could really undermine them further...

But they don't do shit intelligently.

I don't know that other schools would have any standing to sue. They agree to abide by all decisions the NCAA hands down, so they don't have much of a leg on which to stand. Further, we already see the absurd decisions they have mad regarding who to punish and who not to punish. The Duke player gets a 30k "loan" and the NCAA shrugs its shoulders. Cam Newton's father gets paid, and the the NCAA shrugs its shoulders. UNC football has a coach who is an agent, a tutor with limited funds paying thousands in parking tickets for players, and an entire fake academic curriculum for athletes, and the NCAA shrugs its shoulders. NC State has players selling a couple pairs of shoes and the NCAA drops the ban hammer. UConn fails a new regulation retroactively and the NCAA drops the ban hammer. All of this has happened, and schools haven't sued.

Moreover, if other schools do try this and then sue, I imagine any court in the land would immediately rule against the school, because the school admitted to knowingly violating the rules. Unclean hands, yo. What instead will happen is that schools will either just start breaking rules left and right and deal with the consequences when and if they come (like UNC is currently doing), or enough schools will get fed up and leave en masse.

They were caught paying players, essentially via contract. The NCAA told them to cut it out and put them on probation. SMU continued paying the contracts.

NCAA didn't do a damn thing, learn your history.

^^as for smu, basically they got caught paying players and punished, then kept on paying players.

Man, if only amateur sleuthing was a competitive sport.

We'd sleuth so hard. We'd sleuth so hard all over everybody.

how exactly was the NCAA supposed to do anything about this case specifically? No one had any incentive to talk and the NCAA can not force anyone to testify or answer questions, they do not have subpoena power. Everyone kept their mouth shut and the NCAA couldn't do anything.

State did get Lack of Institutional Control for the shoes/ticket thing (which was pretty bullshit to begin with), but yeah State's leadership at the time caved to the pressure and torpedoed their own athletics dept.

aaronburro may be wrong about that detail, but the essence of his post is on point.

I mean, I can recall historical details for days, but I don't really need them. What's been happening--what we've all known about forever--is an epic travesty of athletic "competition." Chapel Hill needs to go down, and everybody needs to know about it. Otherwise, fuck it.

NCAA has historically hammered smaller schools for much lesser violations. In addition, they do not mind penalizing major football programs like USC and Ohio St, because the NCAA gets most of its cash from the NCAA tournament anyway. Imagine Kentucky caught paying its players last year, will the NCAA vacate their title? No way, because it takes away from the credibility of March Madness. Of course, they've vacated a couple final fours with U Minn and Memphis, but that's about it. Kentucky, Duke, UNC and Kansas are the 4 college basketball programs that will never get hit. UCLA used to be too, but not now. Basketball programs need to cheat more than ever to get recruits and keep them on campus for more than an year. And the NCAA is obviously looking the other way to make it happen.

Alabama State and Arkansas State did something exactly similar to UNC, forged grade changes via a rogue Prof with the athletic department claiming they had no idea. had to vacate wins. Double standard indeed.

"
The violations include changing grades, allowing ineligible players to play and practice, conducting offseason workouts that are not allowed by NCAA rules and members of the coaching staff making illegal contact with recruits ...

Thomas said some of the violations involved academic fraud, which he said is considered one of the NCAA's "most serious violations." The infractions also included lack of institutional control by Alabama State and failure to monitor by former head coach L.C. Cole
"

In addition, if Ohio State can be hammered for players getting free tattoos, there's no reason Duke or UNC shouldn't get punished for jewelry or mouthguards.

Simple: you don't talk, you're guilty and we'll nail the program for it. They had all the evidence they needed via the court filings to see that Thomas got impermissible benefits.

^ Yeah, they even showed with tOSU how they won't mess with BCS bowls by letting Pryor and co. play in the Sugar Bowl if they "promised to return." What a joke.

The Penn State lawsuit is irrelevant. It is not an appeal to remove the post season ban and vacated wins. Its purpose is to keep the $50m or so in fines from leaving the State...

That's the thing. The specific school doesn't have to sue. But so many people are growing weary of the NCAA right now, its at a tipping point. College sports doesn't need the NCAA to survive. Nothing says the college presidents can't form a new governing body.

We all should be happy that he's "considering" suspending PJ.

Guns, weed and impermissible benefits and they would only "consider" suspension

But we agreed that sending him to bed with no bowl to smoke, and making him drive an E300 instead of the 350 he had previously was enough.

This is probably already known and just not posted anywhere but the outstanding parking ticket at UNC with the KER license tag belongs to spencer Howard and was on a 2011 Yukon. Tag is no longer in service.

Connect it to an athlete and that is another big deal. I really think the mouthguard is also an interesting angle that for whatever reason no one in the media seems to be pursuing.

Haydn "Fats" Thomas draws the attention of the U.S. Attorney

The U.S. attorney for the middle district of North Carolina is Ripley Rand who did both his undergrad and law school work at UNC. He is the co-author of a children’s book titled, “I want to go to UNC!: An Illustration celebration of a Carolina Education.

Presumably, looking into why he rents so many cars? I don't quite know what he's doing that is illegal, per se... Unless I missed something.

Cue conspiracies that this is to force him to keep his mouth shut, since he's under a legal probe. (Though, it would be smart)
