Then let me just ask you this... pretend the iPhone launched at $599 and exactly one week later cost $399. Would you be upset if you bought on launch day? How about two weeks later? Where do you draw the line? Two months is just too short a time for such a drastic price cut to not point fingers in Apple's direction as having planned the whole thing all along and being dishonest with their customers. Nobody expects a company to not make a profit, but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you find out to what extent they're really taking you for a ride. People expect a certain amount of markup with products, but there's only so far you can go.
Also, I didn't actually buy an iPhone (thought it was a poor choice with no 3G -- typical Apple, leaving products intentionally crippled from the start), but my viewpoint is far from a minority one...9/7/2007 10:56:17 AM |

Well, good point, they Apple faithful would willingly hand over any amount. True. However, the ~900K phone sold were sold to a whole lot of "regular" people who would've had enough sense to wait two months for a phone to save $200.9/7/2007 10:58:21 AM |

How do people not figure out that caps lock is on?
Yes, electronics do decrease in price at a fairly expected rate. Consumers take this into consideration when weighing their options. It's also more gradual than 33% all at once. Usually we see consumer electronics go down 5-10% every quarter or so.
Apple likewise has a fairly predictable pricing structure. Namely, the price stays the same and around six to eight months after the last revision the specs are updated. People familiar with Apple are usually hesitant to buy a particular product "late" in its lifecycle for this very reason.
A 33% price drop (very unusual for Apple) after only two months (very, very unusual) caught everyone off guard. I only wish consumer electronics from other manufacturers dropped in price that rapidly.9/7/2007 11:19:47 AM |

I don't really get you people. Everybody I've spoken to who already had an iPhone was not "unhappy" that they dropped in price. Those who bought it at $600 thought it was worth it -obviously. I don't know if it's jealousy some of you have or what. Some people have more money than you do... Some people appreciate different things, etc. I bought two on the day of the price drop. Sounds like it'll get them more sales. Again, it was worth $600, it's w/out a doubt several tiers above anything else avail. at the new price point. I don't see the problem. I never really had a problem with the iPhone's price, hell I bought an iPod 4 years ago when they cost $400. I just didn't think it was a complete enough product yet to justify a purchase, like almost any first gen apple product. It's supposed to combine your iPod and your smart phone into one device, but it's not good enough at being either one to justify the price for me.
It doesn't have enough storage to replace my 20 gig iPod, so I'd still have to take that with me. It's not a good enough smart phone to justify a $600 price tag, given phones like the At&T 8525 which were available at the time for as much or cheaper, and destroyed the iPhone in functionality and feature set. Today, you have the HTC TyTn II (soon to be the AT&T 8925), which has a touch screen interface, 3.5G, GPS, and a microSD expansion slot.
However, I really do like look, feel, and usability of Apple products so I'm still inclined to wait and see if the iPhone will expand it's feature set to compete with those other phones. However, I'm just not ready to spend $600 or even $400 just for the novelty of posting on TWW while taking a crap at work (yet)
By the way, saying you're ok that it dropped in price is one thing, but pretending that there weren't a lot of iPhone owners who were seriously miffed about a 33% price drop 2 months after release is just being blind, deaf, and dumb. Saying that this a common place price drop is like saying App over Michigan is an every day upset in college football. Why do you think they announced the $100 credit? They were having fucking riots in front of Apple Stores for god sakes, and the blogosphere was on fire with pissed off Apple fan boys. It's fine that you don't care, I probably wouldn't have either, but there were plenty of people that did.
Oh, and Wall Street obviously didn't think it was a great move either, given the way Apple's stock value tumbled after the announcement.

In the cellphone industry, a price drop a couple months after release is standard. Standard. I've sat through marketing meetings where they'd clearly marked:
"RELEASE" "Q1" "Q2" "Q3" "EOL"
And indicated the different price points and changes in margin expected so they could calculate overall ROI. All this, by the way, is usually planned before a single engineer even touches the product.
The only people shocked by this price drop are the hordes of naive consumers who payed more then 40$ for a phone for the first time in their lives (and coincidentally, half of you kids on this website).
Price drops on products that are selling don't "magically" happen. They're generally always founded by market reasons and Apple giving a refund is really only because Apple put its foot in its mouth by claiming that the iphone price would be constant. 9/8/2007 9:32:22 PM |

Is it common with smart phones though? The iPhone's closest competitor, the AT&T/Cingular 8525 was released back in November of last year for $599 without contract, $399 with contract. Nine months later, and it still costs......

3 tips:
1) The iphone is not a business class smartphone.
2) The phone discount rule applies to all phones. If you're too incompetent to find a cheap cost then baby, stick with whatever they give you for free.
3) Seriously dude. Like stop even trying to theorycraft this shit with me. I've had this very discussion hundreds of times with people way smarter then you that also happened to be in the cellular industry.
PS- Just the verify that you are, in fact, an idiot (and I say this with love Iskander, but good God your arguments are just rotten). I added the cheapest plan (39.99) available and went all the way through to checking out: right down to the part where I select one of my CC numbers.
199$ subtotal.

Then I suggest trying again. They automatically select the $44.99 a month unlimited data service plan for you, on top of whatever call plan you choose, which you have to commit to for 6 months to get that price. And it doesn't change the fact that the price hasn't dropped a dime since release.

If your price drop theory doesn't apply to a business class smartphone, how the hell does is apply to an iPhone then? Your entire argument this page (scratch that this entire thread) has been "I worked for a cellphone company so by default, I'm right and your wrong". How do expect to be taken seriously by anyone here when all you can do is blab about your job and type in caps?
^I'm not arguing price. I'm not even saying early adopters got screwed, the price was going to drop eventually and anyone who buys something day 1 knows what they are getting into. It's just funny that people keep insisting that a price drop of this magnitude, in this time frame, is the norm. It's not. It's happened about as many times as a company has given out a $100 credit to early adopters.9/9/2007 9:40:05 AM |
