This is my thoughts about The Pit
I would also add that my dog would need a swimming pool full of water beside that plate because the bbq is dry as fuck.

^^^negative. I've eaten there 5 times and have loved it every time. Shit's fantastic. My only complaint is that the portion sizes are a little small for my tastes but most people don't seem to think so.
Clearly The Pit is the best BBQ in the triangle, based on awards and ruputation. I don't see the pitmaster from some place in Durham being invited to the big cities up north for BBQ festivals. 6/1/2011 1:17:00 PM |

David's Dumpling doesn't hold up to Asian Grill on Falls of Neuse their noodles are better and cheaper
David's shu mai isn't all that impressive - kind of low on flavor and expensive I invite you to compare it to the soup dumplings at Asian Grill
I was at David's last week and the half soft shell crab was fried to a crisp (really overcooked) and sitting on a limp pile of wildly overdressed "seaweed salad" that seemed to be more wilted lettuce than anything else
the dry noodles with pork and greens were dry, just as I expected - but what I didn't expect was that the 2-3 oz of pork that accompanied it was equally dry... not a balanced dish at all the noodles were also not seasoned in any discernable way so what I ended up with was half of a deep fried crunch pile on limp greens with a half bowl full of dry, plain noodles and some pork leather for $20 6/1/2011 1:23:52 PM |

I eat at David's for lunch at least once a week and I've never experienced what you are talking about. I've had almost everything on the menu.
Their lunch menu is $7.50 for a decently sized proportion of food. The only thing I didn't like was their curry dish. 6/1/2011 1:39:48 PM |

The pit is, of course, better than smithfields.
However, the price premium for the pit far exceeds the difference in the bbq. 6/1/2011 2:09:23 PM |

Greg Hatem has the best goddamn PR department in the restaurant world.
That is the only reason that the Pit has national recognition.
It's fine, but overpriced, and pales in comparison to what you could get at Mitchell's without having to sit amongst a flock of assholes.
I'm excited to go to Ed's new barbecue joint, assuming I'll be paying for the pig and not some fancy-looking chairs. 6/1/2011 2:30:22 PM |

Dan Dan Noodles are my favorite - get the scallion pancake with it.
They have good noodle soups too. I recommend you go with 6 to 8 people and get the big table with the Lazy Susan. Then order some dumplings, a couple noodle dishes and a couple entrees.6/1/2011 2:32:21 PM |

I didn't bother reading the thread because I know people hate The Pit for some reason.
The Pit is better hands-down, but they're still very different. You don't go to the Pit for large-scale takeout or last-minute BBQ lovin' like you would Smithfields, and you don't go to Smithfields for high-quality BBQ and sides, you go there because it's cheap and easy and still tastes good. Et cetera.
Both good. The Pit is better for quality. Smithfields is cheaper, certainly. TOO BAD THERE'S NO GODDAMN SMITHFIELDS IN SOUTHWEST RALEIGH. 6/1/2011 3:00:08 PM |

I think the main reason I like the Pit is because they have great sides that don't taste like shit.
Their baked beans are perhaps the most amazing baked beans ever viewed by man.

I'd have to disagree. While I haven't been to The Pit, so I can't really speak on them tooooo much. However, IMO Smithfield's has pretty good sides. Their slaw and potato salad are pretty good (not as good as my dad's homemade) and I hear their Brunswick stew is the best. I will admit their fries and hushpuppies could be better. But, I definitely can't say Smithfield's is cheap. Almost $4 for a BBQ sandwich is RIDICULOUS (almost like Char-grills). Smithfield's is like Chic-Fil-A for me.......DELICIOUS but EXPENSIVE.

I actually agreed with you in my post. Smithfield's is great value for product, quicker and cheaper and still very much good. However, I will say again, The Pit is higher quality. It's more than reasonable to prefer Smithfields to the Pit for any number of reasons and vice-versa, because they're different beasts.6/1/2011 3:36:04 PM |
