^ actually, I just looked and found this on the bottom of the pile, for some levity.


I got about 1/2 through it, and I couldn't take it any more. It was bringing back too many bad memories, and while very funny and shrewd, I didn't really feel like I was accomplishing anything by reading it any further. It was published in 2004, reviewing Bush's first term and some of his previous positions. I knew I was into something good when I found this passage at the end of the forward. The author, Molly Ivins (who died in 2007, before the financial meltdown), is talking about what happened to Texas after Bush left office - there was a fiscal crisis starting, and Bush said he hoped he could leave office before he had to deal with it. Very apropos to today....

I knew nothing about this book when I picked it up from a stack a friend loaned me. It's a very good book and the writing is extremely visual. I recommend it.

Finished Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind. If you like any fantasy/speculative fiction stuff it is definitely a good read.

Deciding b/w a few things now...

I have never actually read Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass. Also considering Darkly Dreaming Dexter as well as looking into the Farseer Trilogy. I'm kinda holding out though since my birthday is Thursday to make sure I don't get anything else I am more interested in.

The Lovely Bones.

Read the first chapter and I was already feeling so sad...it seems like it'll be a good book, but honestly, I hope it doesn't drag the storyline on and on.

VERY long and dry in places, but with some interesting stuff too

now on this:


much much much drier than i expected. actually, i'm not really sure what i expected, but i'm about halfway though and the first half was like cliff notes on genetics, bone/muscle composition and how your brain works. just now on stuff about the fighting, hopefully it gets better. the guy tries to be funny at places, but it just comes off the way you would expect it to when a professor tries to be funny.

A little much on the military side of things, but that's a male author for you. Guys apparently like that kind of stuff.

I love that book. The guy that did LoTR is making it into a movie and it comes out in December. I can't wait!

I think I'll dust that book off and give it another read in preparation for the movie.

Been very happy with my first two Chabon books (The Yiddish Policeman's Union, Wonder Boys), and this one is hitting on all cylinders so far. I think this is his most heralded book as well. We'll see how it turns out.

Trying to build up a list of books to tackle/get a small list together that I can use if people ask me about Christmas presents. I have quite a few, but have had a few others interest me this week. Anyone here ever read the two Scott Lynch books The Lies of Locke Lamora and the sequel Red Seas Under Red Skies?

^ i have both of those and have read them both...i didn't think i was going to like them since i was in a fantasy/magic mood at the time, but i really enjoyed them...lynch's character development is very good and i haven't found myself enthralled with a character like that in a while

i didn't actually realize they were a series of books, but i was sorely disappointed to find that out when i had finished red skies and realized i had no more locke lamora to read

I looooooooooooooove The Lovely Bones... such a good book. Her memoir Lucky is really good, too. Extremely sad though.

awesome! exactly the kind of thing I wanted to hear.

Have you ever read Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of The Wind? If not you might really enjoy that. I just finished that (came out in 2007 but I just read it) and the 2nd book is supposed to be out in 2010.

yeah, just finished it (i think i mentioned it a few pages ago and he you had mentioned reading it, as well)...again, i was very disappointed that i have to wait for the other two books

it was very good and i can tell i'm going to pick up every book that rothfuss writes...couldn't really ask for a better debut novel

I figured that would happen (me being lazy and not wanting to sift back to see if I had asked the exact same question already doh!).

and agreed about having to wait for sequels. Looks like I'm swamping myself with book series that are still unfolding (kingkiller chronicles, song of ice and fire, scott lynch's series etc.). Its interesting because for the most part, a lot of the fantasy I have always read was older, already complete works.

my reading schedule is full for a while...decided to re-read the WOT series since the last 2 books (well, remaining 2 parts of the last book) should be out before i finish (aren't there only supposed to be 6 months between the releases?)

just finished "new spring" (having never read it...wasn't spectacular, but a decent read)...now i'm on "eye of the world"



i never actually read "knife of dreams" since it wasn't out when i finished "crossroads of twilight"...so there are essentially 4 new books for me to read (and i barely remember the details of the other ones)
