you're right, i should just forget about the fact that smith habitually punches teammates in the face unprovoked.

Rivers would, on the other hand, have the leadership and asshole qualities necessary to regulate when Smith starts being a drama queen

imho, most exiciting play in Panthers history

ps: fuck Anthony Bright and fuck Ken Lucas

Smitty > 99% of Carolina Panthers all time

who was better, Peppers? Smitty never took plays off. Greene or White? Had their best years with other teams. Sam Mills or Mark Fields? Great character guys, didn't do AS MUCH on the field...and I'm prepared to defend my argument to Mills supporters, (Sam Mills RIP)...89 is and was the best Panther ever...(so far, in this young franchise)

you obviously haven't watched when smith half-asses routes.

How many routes has 89 halfassed, aside from when Clausen was the QB last year?

Regardless, I think Smith gives it his all a lot more than Pep did

Smith is a much bigger Diva than Peppers ever was. For a young QB, I think the only worse WRs in the game to have would be TO or Ocho Cinco. I'd love to get rid of Smith and give Newton a chance with some young WRs who don't try to demand the ball and chew out their young QB on the sideline after every drive.

He only demands the ball when they have been losing. Who blames him I like having someone that wants to win and isnt just there for the money.

brandon marshall is more of a diva than Smith

i agree with Twista, 89 was and is the best Panther ever. He can be a bit of a diva, but I think its more because he's passionate about winning and not so much because hes unhappy with his personal stats

i will agree that Smith is the best Panther of all time

i would rather see him be successful somewhere else than waste away with the Panthers like he did last season. he's paid his dues and earned the right to leave if he so chooses.

If Smith isn't a Panther this season, it would be nice to see him catching passes from Philly Cheese

smith is a diva wtf? you can't compare a guy who gets pissed off because hes overcompetitive to some guy like randy moss who's only half involved with the game, I mean the guy plays flag football in the off season, I really doubt he wants to just half ass it when hes in the nfl

Quote :
"Cam Newton And Brett Favre Could Be Working Together Soon
by Joel Thorman • May 11, 2011 8:29 AM EDT

Last week Brett Favre said his future could include coaching or some TV work but it was unlikely he would be doing either anytime soon. Well, if it's coaching he's looking to do, I think we've found his first pupil -- Cam Newton. Some in Carolina, like former Panther and now radio host Brentson Buckner, have been lobbying for Favre to work with Newton.

"Brett has seen everything and has a wealth of knowledge. If I'm Cam's agent, I get on the phone with Brett and say, 'I want you to tutor this guy,' " Buckner said.

And as it turns out, Favre's agent, Bus Cook, is also Newton's agent, so this could actually happen. (Favre actually helped Cook sign Newton as a client a few months back.)

Will it do any good?

That depends on Favre's teaching methods and whether he can effectively communicate with someone nearly half his age It also depends on what Favre can offer that Newton's other mentors -- Warren Moon, QB coach George Whitfield and his workout partner Ken Dorsey -- can't. It's hard to see where he fits in, especially with no coaching experience.

Favre could also provide Newton with some pointers on how to handle the spotlight and, if Newton were smart, he would do the opposite."

no way richardson allows this kind of media tornado in charlotte this year

Old Jerry Richardson? No way he'd allow it. New Jerry Richardson? Who knows. From signing Shockey to drafting Newton, we seem to have ditched whatever conservative approach we used to have. I think he wants anything that will put the Panthers in the spotlight and potentially sell tickets. Also, updating^

No sure how I feel about this. On the downside, Favre turned into probably the biggest Diva in the league and I'm afraid that might rub off on Cam. On the plus side, maybe Favre can use his Wrangler connections to get Newton a similar deal with South Pole or Phat Farm

not at all, it'd be impossible to not absorb things from watching him for 3 years, but it wasn't in favres contract to mentor rogers.

obviously, Rodgers isn't good due to Favre, anyone that thinks I am saying that just doesn't pay attention

but I also think the shit that Favre went through is a useful learning experience that Newton is obviously aware of, so I don't think them working together would be a bad thing

I'm sure Favre did help the development of Aaron Rodgers. But probably indirectly. Righteous indignation and a desire to stick it to Favre couldn't hurt.

However, unless Brett is going to sign and be the starter week 1, I doubt Cam would be very changed by any "mentoring".

There was a Newton sighting this weekend at a bar in Charlotte. He was accompanied by a tall white man and a white woman. Wonder if it was the Weinkster?

Pat Yasinkas laying down the hammer

this guy Russell is a moron.

Quote :
"Russell in Asheville, N.C. wrote to say he hopes my career tanks just as quickly as Cam Newton’s career because of the “cheerleading job’’ I did before the draft and says I helped ruin Carolina’s franchise.

Pat Yasinskas: Thanks for that cheery note. You really think Marty Hurney, Jerry Richardson and Ron Rivera sat around and read my stuff and said, “Gee, if he thinks we should draft Cam Newton, we darn sure better draft Cam Newton"? I think you missed reality by half a mile here. I was writing that the Panthers were going to draft Newton because my sources kept telling me that. I simply was doing my job and preparing fans for what was coming. You can disagree with the drafting of Newton all you want. I don’t know if it was the right move and we won’t know for several years. But shooting the messenger isn’t going to do any good. Hurney, Richardson and Rivera are the ones who drafted Newton. "

Mr. Cool

Quote :
"Cam gets a very apt mentor.

Remember Ken Dorsey? Big career at Miami (Fla.) a decade ago, with some limited success as a (mostly) NFL backup quarterback. Interesting that he just finished eight days working with the first pick in the draft, Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, and they'll be back at it again today in Bradenton, Fla.

There's a good reason Dorsey and Newton have become workout and classroom partners. In 2001 and 2002, Dorsey, at Miami, was coached by Hurricane offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. In 2007 and 2008, Dorsey, with the Cleveland Browns, was coached by Browns offensive coordinator Chudzinski.

Newton was able to get a Carolina playbook, with Panthers offensive coordinator Chudzinski's encyclopedic offense, to take with him during the lockout. Dorsey spent last week instructing Newton in the finer points of the offense, in addition to telling him the expectations and coaching methods of Chudzinski.

"The best way to describe it,'' said the quarterback coach who readied Newton for his pre-draft workouts, George Whitfield, "is it's like an old pilot grooming a new pilot to take over his plane. The old pilot's teaching him about every one of the controls in the cockpit.''

It sounds smart and valuable. Compared to the other highly drafted quarterbacks, Newton ought to be as advanced as he can be when the lockout ends. How important will that be? We'll see, because there's going to be a tremendous amount of pressure on the Panthers to play Newton early."

pretty cool little nugget

I like everything I've heard about Cam post-draft. He's said all the right things, he hasn't nigged it up, and he's apparently working hard with the right people in order to be ready for the season.

I'm rooting for him. If he can be a more athletic version of Josh Freeman, then the Panthers hit the jackpot.

If he turns into Vince Young, then we're all screwed.
