and it's about more than just the food trucks, but they were the focal point

it's about getting people downtown

and raleigh has awesome things going on all the time downtown, they just leave food trucks for the food and not as the entertainment

look, I'm downtown every weekend. I love it.

I'm giving Durham kudos where it's due because this was executed better than almost every event I've ever been to downtown

they seem to be embracing being a (semi) big city/downtown better than Raleigh is currently, and I would love to see that change

Raleigh is different than Durham. It's nearly twice as large and much less compact than Durham. There are going to be differences. Nothing is wrong with downtown raleigh, it's just different. Let it be different.

^What? You can love downtown Raleigh and acknowledge that there's things wrong with it. Raleigh's stance against food trucks, or at least the way they've dealt with them, is something wrong in my opinion. It's not a devaluing statement.

^^Food truck rodeos aren't for me, but I get what you're saying and I am slightly envious of that facet was well.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be food trucks. But I don't think Raleigh needs to copy Durham's food truck rodeo idea. And yes, anytime they close Fayetteville St. down there are trucks out there, which happens several times a year. I'm not sure I've seen much that you wouldn't see at the State Fair but they are out there.

P.S. Anybody who thinks that new park shouldn't happen needs to drive down Western Blvd. on a nice day. There are cars lined all the way up and down the road as far as you can see.

I don't hate durham, its just 20 minutes away. so if i want to enjoy their food truck events I would go.

Quote :

I am not saying you are the champion of durham but this only supports my point. Raleigh doesn't need anything to get people downtown. The amphitheater, museums, public squares, events, capitol, bars, restaurants all do that just fine. In fact the raleigh chamber, and its member restaurants want less food truck activity for the most part, as it only cuts into their business. I have always argued that this is a shortsighted opinion, but it is the current belief of most downtown business owners.

^^The "parking" situation for Pullen Park is fucking terrible. I don't know why more thought wasn't put into it during all that construction. Pullen Park and Lake Johnson Park... the second the sun is out you have to park a half mile up the road.

At the rate the region is growing, demand is outstripping capacity faster than we can build parks.

I saw that on Sunday and couldn't believe it! Cars parked on the side of Western almost down to the prison!

And can we please just STFU about food trucks already? Talk about beating a dead horse.

The government of Tunisia destroyed a food truck and ignited dozens of revolutions that spelled their doom. People take food trucks seriously.

Regarding Parking on Western for Pullen Park:

I agree, this is getting worse and worse. This started back when Pullen reopened, the attached photo is from back in January, and today was another really bad day. Cars were parked all along Morehead school property, and all the way beyond Pullen Rd. One problem I noticed is that the sign to overflow parking that is placed on Ashe(?) St right by the oark entrance seems to point right at the fence where cars park. The best solution would be No Parking signs all along the Morehead school fence, and along Western in the other direction. We have stopped using that section of greenway on weekends due to this issue. Please enforce, but also mark more clearly for out of town park visitors.

what woudl be really great is a continously running trolley or bus that runs from Dorothea Dix parking, on Sat and Sun. It would take some getting used to, but eventually would become part of the fun for families.

Agreed there should be some enforcement and preventative measures such as signs.
Also, drivers should be aware that they may park on NC State's campus for free on weekends and enter the park along Pullen Rd.

This issue will be referred to the Parks & recreation Department and Public Works to discuss the need for additional signage. Thanks for reporting."

Is that where those folks got carjacked last night? Seems to me they need to move the park out of the ghetto.

Or build a parking garage.

Here's a great article on the trials and difficulties of the life of a food truck operator. The government should support these brave entrepreneurs. Every brick and mortar restaurant should be required to have one parking space allocated for a competing food truck for the benefit of all citizens(unlike a handicap parking space, which only benefits a few citizens) This is in addition to requiring one parking space for bicycle corrals, of course. If a business only has one on-street parking space, the bicycle corral should take precedence over the handicap space or foodtruck space, of course. I'm a reasonable man, after all, and bicycles better serve to promote a thriving city than cripples do.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/22/food-truck-failures_n_2499463.html

The solution to every problem on SeeClickFix is more signage. But if you make a homemade sign to sell your sofa the full and horrible wrath of municipal government will be brought down upon you. I hope it is one day discovered that the woman that answers posts on SeeClickFix doesn't work for the city at all, and the entire website is just a diversion tactic to placate the nanniesnextdoor so they won't call Town Hall and bother them.

SCF distributes things to the City and they do respond and monitor, its a very useful resource. I had a bunch of missing covers for sanitary and storm cleanouts in the street near me and I wasn't getting anywhere leaving messages on the phones. Someone told me about SCF, i posted there, and they had covers the next day. A lot of things are people bitching, but there are also real issues and its effective at getting them resolved.

Obviously signs are not going to fix this problem, but the great thing about SCF is the people will point that out and keep reopening the issue until more is done.

go away

I like water flouridation. It's a way to sneak socialized medicine under the noses of Republicans, since it primarily benefits poor people at taxpayer expense. Rich people can afford water filters to remove it, so it's a win-win.

There are things in those nasty old water pipes downtown that no amount of chlorine can fix. It's every city's secret: shiny skyscrapers up top, decay underneath. Living in an urban area is a huge risk. The dangers are all around you. They can't be fixed without razing the structure, and even then the air, water and soil are hopelessly toxic from hundreds of years of pollution.

But that's not important. You'll likely be killed in violent crime before the pollution kills you.

The food trucks are probably more sanitary than any restaurant in a historic building. Once the roaches and mice set up shop, you have to destroy the building to get rid of them. Or keep spraying chemicals to hide them from the customers.

Meanwhile look at this gleaming example of cleanliness:

Every piece of equipment is removed and cleaned regularly, and health inspectors show them no mercy. Personally, I'll take the so-called "roach coach" any day over some nasty Fayetteville street eatery that used to house untold commercial toxins in a former life.

"Hey, I've got this ancient building that housed petrochemical inks and paper toxins for decades and employed countless barefoot child laborers in sweatshop conditions. Let's make an upscale eatery from it! It will be so romantic!"

But wait! It was used as jewelry store and photographers office as well. Good thing that those sorts of people never use harmful chemicals either!

Well, I think the controversy around Agenda 21 has less to do with its' content and more to do with the manner in which it was entered into; that is, without the ratification of the Senate. It draws into focus the meteoric rise of so-called "executive agreements" which have been primarily used in the past sixty years to circumvent the need for the treaty approval process outlined in the Constitution itself, both as a matter practical necessity and political convenience. Whether Agenda 21 is a treaty or executive agreement seems to be moot, as other nations treat both as legally binding. Therefore, I think to many it represents the gradual but precipitous erosion of the Constitution itself, as well as the suggestion that the United States Federal government might be prostrating itself before a foreign legislative body, without any direct representation from the citizens of United States.

I agree that the content of Agenda 21 is largely meaningless to the average citizen, who indeed may find their interests consistently underrepresented and their rights indifferently eroded with great regularity by local jurisdictions in which they decline to participate.

^^Here's what I wrote earlier in the thread:

Quote :
"This idea has gained momentum in the last year or two and is becoming a significant problem for planners around the country. It is usually referred to as 'Agenda 21', and you can find all sorts of conspiracy theories if you Google it. Most recently everyone's favorite conspiracy theorist, Glenn Beck, has written a "psychological thriller" novel called Agenda 21. He has also released a list of keywords (http://www.glennbeck.com/agenda21/agenda-21-word-list) that you can use to identify when UN conspirators may be trying to take over your town. This includes such terrifying words as "Choice", "Equity", "Fair", "Communities", Inclusive", "Local", "Outcomes", "Prosperity", and "Vision".

Of course, the funny thing is, I don't know any planner who had heard of Agenda 21 until people started shouting at them about it at public meetings. The actual Agenda 21 is a voluntary sustainable development plan that was signed by President Bush in 1992.

As loud as a vocal few have been, ultimately most people don't know or don't care about an insignificant 20+ year old UN resolution. A poll of 1,300 US voters last year found that 9% supported Agenda 21, 6% opposed and 85% had no opinion."
