You're nuts if you don't think a guy with his array of shots, floaters , and accuracy on midrange jumpers canot develop a reliable 3 point shot in the NBA.
He hit over 50% last year for God's sake.
I didn't bother watching us play but 4 games this year because we sucked but from what i saw most of his threes were forced because the defense was clogging the lane or shading heavily his way. Combine thatwith fatigue issues from his high usage rate/minutes and I think he's probably closer to 34-38% shooter on a handful less attempts/higher quality shots.
Give him two years to develop NBA range and I'd be surprised if he can't hit 33-36% like a Harrison Barnes except without the terrible 2pt% and rebounding numbers. 3/25/2014 3:15:27 PM |

Would love to have had TJ back, but he's earned his paycheck. I hope he adjusts well to the NBA game and has a long career. I'm not sure he has enough left to prove on an individual level to warrant coming back and hoping to move from #15 range in the draft to top 10. It seems risky. I'm pretty sure I'd go if I were in his situation.
I'm only disappointed that we couldn't translate his talent into more team success. He was a bright spot on a talented, but disappointing 2012-13 team and then made a leap and carried a weaker team to overacheive this year (despite the heartbreaking losses, this team still overacheived). 3/25/2014 8:17:34 PM |

i really don't think i'm being crazy when i say the following: warren isn't being guided by a 27 year old aau coach and a mom that has no idea what's going on. basically any former player will tell you to stay in school. he turned down florida, kentucky and north carolina, among others, to come to nc state, so he is likely on some level trying to fulfill some childhood dreams. he sees the team he's playing on and he knows who's coming in, and most certainly realizes that he could potentially achieve a lot. and to boot, everything you hear about the draft these days is how the nba wants older, more complete and mature players. he has very clear flaws in his game on both ends of the floor, and has two free years to fix them before he competes for playing time in the nba.
for real, that's not crazy, is it? i'm definitely being a homer, but i'm not being crazy, am i?] 3/25/2014 8:26:54 PM |

There is also the fact some guys realize the college years only happen once and want to enjoy them if they can. Once you go pro basketball becomes more of a business than purely fun. Maybe he wants to enjoy one more year of just playing free fun basketball and earn his degree. Every guy is different and has different motivations. 3/25/2014 8:34:07 PM |

recent history suggests that you're better off leaving when your stock as is high as it's going to get as opposed to staying and having a brighter spotlight on you/another full year of scouts picking apart your game
what more does he have to prove that would also cause his stock to rise? he isn't athletic enough to be a top-5 pick and that certainly won't change if he stays another year
every little flaw that his offensive game has can be fixed by professional coaching, not another year of being on campus
it'd be great as a fan of the team if he came back, but it'd be better for him if he left, so I'm going with what's best for him

he would have been drafted higher had he left after his junior year, more than likely to a team other than the Nuggets, playing for a coach other than George Karl (who Hodge absolutely abhors) 3/25/2014 10:13:42 PM |

None of this is crazy.
I wonder if Paige and McAdoo deciding to stay, and the possibility of Jabari staying is keeping TJ from finalizing a decision to go? We all like to pretend we're individuals and snowflakes, but more often than not we trend towards the decisions our peers and contemporaries make.

I'll say this -- I think Warren is gone, and no one could blame him. He's being projected in the lottery on some sites. Yeah, he needs work on his jumper and FT's, but those are things he can get sorted out in the pros just as easily as college.
That said, NC State means more to him than most players. There's been quite a few articles where he talks about the bball history and the great players who have played here. Most of that probably has to do with his dad.
I think the chance to stay another year, potentially lead us to an ACC title, and become an all-time great at NC State (someone who's mentioned in the same sentence as David Thompson) means a lot to TJ .... maybe moreso than any player we've had here in a while.
Not saying any of that happens, and not saying it's enough to bring him back, but it's something at least. 3/27/2014 2:40:40 PM |

correct me if i'm wrong, but are people actually arguing that hodge should've left earlier b/c then he would have been picked by anyone but the nuggets and then he might've found his niche in the nba and had a longer career? just b/c he might have been picked by a different team? 3/29/2014 12:57:11 PM |

I dont think anyone was arguing that he should've left early, I think they were just saying that Denver was a shitty landing spot for him. I dont really agree with that, unless you want to point out Denver's strangely high athlete shooting rate at the time as being a reason he would've been better off somewhere else. 3/29/2014 5:09:21 PM |
